The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!
Chapter 27: The System
The shadows gathered faster.
They crawled across the floor like spilled ink, curling around Noctis’s boots before climbing higher.
Rin stared at him.
For some reason, the sight didn’t frighten him as much as it should have. Maybe it was because of everything Noctis had just told him.
Maybe it was because of the strange memories still flickering behind his eyes. Or maybe...
It was because Noctis looked sad.
Not dangerous. Not powerful. Just sad.
"Wait."
Rin took a step forward. Noctis opened his eyes.
"You shouldn’t stay."
"I don’t care."
"You will when Kaelith enters."
"...Probably."
A faint smile appeared on Noctis’s lips.
"There you are."
"What?"
"The Rin I remember."
Rin frowned.
"You’re really obsessed with saying things that make absolutely no sense."
"I’ve had centuries of practice."
"That’s not a good excuse."
"No."
Noctis glanced toward the door. The footsteps were getting closer. Much closer. Rin heard Kaelith shouting his name again.
"Rin!"
"I think he’s angry."
"He usually is when he can’t find you."
"That’s comforting."
"It shouldn’t be."
The shadows rose around Noctis’s body. Rin suddenly felt an unpleasant pressure in his chest. He didn’t want him to leave. The realization surprised him.
Not because he trusted Noctis completely. He didn’t. There were still too many unanswered questions. But somewhere inside him was a strange certainty.
A feeling that if Noctis disappeared now... Rin might never see him again.
"Wait!"
Noctis paused.
Rin grabbed the sleeve of his robe. The Witness looked down at Rin’s hand. Then at Rin. Neither moved.
"...Why?"
Rin opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Why?
Because he had questions?
Because Noctis knew something about his forgotten memories?
Because this strange man had apparently spent thousands of years watching versions of him die?
Because somehow... Rin believed that Noctis wasn’t lying.
"I don’t know."
Noctis’s expression softened.
"That’s okay."
The door suddenly exploded inward.
"RIN!"
Kaelith stepped through the doorway with his sword already drawn.
Behind him stood Lucien, Selara, Vorak, and two heavily armed guards.
Everyone froze. Kaelith’s eyes immediately landed on Rin. Then moved to Noctis.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. Noctis calmly released Rin’s sleeve.
Kaelith’s grip tightened around his sword.
"...Step away from him."
Noctis looked at Kaelith. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then Noctis smiled.
"You always say that."
Kaelith’s eyes narrowed.
"I don’t remember you."
"You will."
"Enough."
Kaelith’s voice carried a warning. Noctis looked at Rin one last time.
"Remember what I told you."
"Which part?"
"The part you already know."
"...That explains absolutely nothing."
"I know."
Rin groaned.
"Why does everyone in this world talk like they’re in a prophecy?!"
The System suddenly appeared.
[Excellent observation.]
Rin nearly jumped.
"NOT NOW!"
[Correction: Now is statistically an excellent time.]
"I hate you."
[Emotional hostility detected.]
[Relationship with Host: Thriving.]
"WHAT?!"
Kaelith looked at Rin.
"Who are you speaking to?"
Rin pointed angrily at the empty air.
"The stupid blue rectangle!"
Everyone looked. There was nothing there. Kaelith slowly looked back at him.
"...There is no rectangle."
"It is there!"
[Host appears to be experiencing visual phenomena.]
Rin stared.
"You are literally doing this on purpose."
[Incorrect.]
[Probably.]
Rin’s eye twitched. Noctis laughed. Kaelith looked at him.
"You find this amusing?"
"Very."
"You shouldn’t."
"I know."
The shadows around Noctis suddenly surged. Kaelith moved instantly. His sword flashed.
The blade cut through the darkness—
but there was nothing behind it.
Noctis had disappeared. Only a faint trail of silver light remained. Kaelith lowered his sword slowly.
Silence.
Rin stared at the empty space.
"...He left."
Lucien stepped forward.
"Did he hurt you?"
"No."
"Did he threaten you?"
"No."
"Did he tell you anything?"
Rin hesitated.
"...Yes."
Kaelith looked directly at him.
"What?"
Rin swallowed.
"Things about the world."
Kaelith’s expression hardened.
"What things?"
Rin glanced toward the others.
"Not here."
Kaelith studied him for several seconds.
Then nodded.
"Very well."
Vorak looked between them.
"...Are we all pretending this was normal?"
Selara sighed.
"Apparently."
"I hate this fortress."
"You say that every day."
"And every day I become more correct."
Rin couldn’t help laughing. The tension in the room eased slightly.
But Kaelith didn’t smile. His eyes remained fixed on the place where Noctis had vanished. Something about his expression made Rin uncomfortable.
"Kaelith?"
The Demon General looked at him.
"Are you alright?"
"I am fine."
"You look like you’re about to murder the floor."
"I am considering it."
"...The floor?"
"It knows what it did."
Rin blinked. Vorak slowly nodded.
"I understand him."
Selara stared at both of them.
"I don’t."
"You’re not supposed to."
Kaelith finally sheathed his sword.
"Come."
Rin followed. But before leaving, he looked back. The room was empty.
Except...
Something glimmered on the floor. A small wooden ring.
Rin froze. He stepped back.
"Wait."
Kaelith stopped.
Rin crouched and picked it up. The same ring Noctis had shown him. The cracked wooden ring.
His fingers closed around it. Immediately—
Pain.
Rin gasped. The room vanished. He was somewhere else.
Somewhere warm. Sunlight filtered through green leaves.
He could hear birds. Someone was laughing. His own laughter.
A younger Rin sat beneath a tree, holding a small knife. Wood shavings covered his clothes.
Across from him... Noctis was watching. Not as a Witness. Not as a mysterious immortal.
Just... Noctis. Younger. His silver hair was longer. His eyes weren’t tired. And he was smiling.
Rin looked down at the wooden ring in his hand.
"Does it look terrible?"
Noctis laughed.
"It looks terrible."
"Hey!"
"You asked."
"I was hoping you’d lie."
"I’m not good at lying."
"That’s unfortunate."
Rin held up the ring.
"Still..."
He smiled.
"...I think I’ll give it to you."
Noctis’s expression changed.
"Why?"
"Because you look lonely."
The memory flickered.
Another scene. Rin standing in a field. Kaelith beside him.
Noctis watching from far away.
Another. A burning city. Rin covered in blood. Kaelith screaming his name.
Another. Rin lying beneath a tree. Noctis kneeling beside him. Crying.
Another. Rin holding Kaelith’s hand.
Another. Rin holding Noctis’s hand.
Another. Rin alone.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Thousands of images. Thousands of endings. Thousands of deaths.
Rin screamed. The vision shattered. He fell forward. Kaelith caught him before he hit the floor.
"Rin!"
Rin couldn’t breathe. His hands trembled violently.
"Too many..."
Kaelith held him firmly.
"Look at me."
Rin tried.
"Rin."
His golden eyes were the only stable thing in the room.
"Look at me."
Rin focused on him.
"You’re here."
Rin swallowed.
"You’re real."
"Yes. I’m here."
"Yes."
"I’m not dead."
Kaelith’s grip tightened.
"No."
Rin closed his eyes. Slowly...
The shaking stopped. Lucien stared at them. Selara looked away. Vorak suddenly became extremely interested in the ceiling.
After several seconds, Rin opened his eyes.
Kaelith was still holding him. Neither moved. Rin realized how close they were.
"...Uh."
Kaelith looked down.
"...You are trembling."
"I’m aware."
"You should rest."
"Probably."
Neither moved. Rin glanced at Kaelith’s hand. Then at his face.
"...You can let go now."
Kaelith immediately released him.
"Of course."
The speed of the response was almost suspicious.
Rin looked away. His face felt strangely warm. The System appeared.
[Romantic tension detected.]
Rin’s eyes widened.
"No."
[Romantic tension confirmed.]
"No."
[Kaelith Favorability +5.]
"STOP."
[Host embarrassment +30.]
"YOU’RE THE WORST."
Vorak raised an eyebrow.
"...Did the rectangle say something?"
Rin covered his face.
"Don’t ask."
Lucien sighed.
"I fear I already understand."
Kaelith remained silent. But the tips of his ears were slightly red.
Rin noticed. He immediately looked away.
Later that night... The fortress was quiet.
Rin sat alone in Kaelith’s study. The wooden ring rested on the table. He had been staring at it for nearly an hour.
Nothing happened. No visions. No messages. No magical revelations.
Just wood. Rin sighed.
"Come on."
He poked it.
"Do something mysterious."
Nothing.
"Glow."
Nothing.
"Curse me."
Nothing.
"Give me unlimited money."
Nothing.
Rin leaned back.
"...Worth a try."
The door opened. Kaelith entered.
"You are still awake."
Rin looked up.
"Unfortunately."
"You should sleep."
"I tried."
"Try harder."
"That’s not how sleep works."
Kaelith walked toward the desk.
His eyes immediately landed on the ring.
"...Where did you get that?"
Rin’s expression changed.
"Noctis left it."
Kaelith went still.
"You touched it?"
"Yeah."
"And?"
"I saw something."
"What?"
Rin hesitated.
"I saw us."
Kaelith’s expression hardened.
"Us?"
"Not this us."
Rin struggled to explain.
"Different versions."
Kaelith was silent.
"You and me."
A pause.
"Sometimes we were friends."
Kaelith’s eyes softened slightly.
"Sometimes..."
Rin looked down.
"...you died."
Kaelith said nothing.
"Sometimes I died."
His voice became quieter.
"And sometimes..."
Rin swallowed.
"...we were happy."
Kaelith looked at the ring.
"Do you remember?"
"No."
"Then why do you know?"
"I don’t know."
Kaelith stepped closer.
"Rin."
"Hm?"
"If your memories return..."
He paused.
"Do not allow them to consume you."
Rin smiled weakly.
"That’s easier said than done."
"I know."
"You’re worried."
Kaelith looked at him.
"Yes."
The answer came immediately.
Rin blinked.
"...Oh."
Kaelith seemed to realize what he’d admitted.
He looked away. Rin smiled.
"That’s cute."
Kaelith’s eyes narrowed.
"I am not cute."
"You absolutely are."
"I am a General."
"Generals can’t be cute?"
"No."
"Who made that rule?"
"I did."
"Well, I reject it."
Kaelith sighed.
"You are impossible."
"And yet..."
Rin grinned.
"...you keep me around."
Kaelith looked at him.
For a moment... Neither spoke. Then—
A tiny smile appeared. Barely there. But real. Rin’s chest tightened.
The System appeared.
[WARNING.]
Rin frowned.
"What?"
[WARNING.]
[Emotional synchronization increasing.]
Rin stared.
"...What does that mean?"
The System didn’t answer.
Instead...
The interface flickered.
[Host...]
[Please...]
[Do not make me choose.]
Rin’s smile disappeared.
"What?"
The System vanished.
Kaelith noticed the sudden change.
"What happened?"
Rin slowly stood.
"I don’t know."
Then—
A bell rang. Once. Twice. Three times.
The entire fortress shook. Kaelith immediately grabbed his sword. Rin looked toward the window.
Outside...
The snow had stopped.
Every single snowflake hung motionless in the air.
The entire world seemed frozen. Kaelith stepped toward the window.
"Stay behind me."
Rin followed anyway.
"I wasn’t planning on doing that."
"You should."
"Probably."
They reached the glass. The valley below was completely still.
Then... A figure appeared.
Not Noctis. Something else.
A woman. Long white hair. A silver crown.
A dress made entirely of pale light. She stood in the center of the frozen valley.
Kaelith’s expression changed.
"...Impossible."
Rin looked at him.
"You know her?"
"No."
"Then why do you look terrified?"
Kaelith didn’t answer. The woman raised her head. Her eyes opened. They were completely black. Then she smiled.
And Rin heard a voice. Not through his ears. Inside his mind.
Rin Lee.
He froze.
You are not supposed to remember.
Rin’s blood ran cold.
Kaelith grabbed his shoulder.
"Rin?"
The voice continued.
You were never supposed to meet Noctis.
The wooden ring on the desk began glowing.
You were never supposed to survive the twelfth day.
Rin stared at the valley.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled wider.
Someone who has watched you die more times than you can imagine.
The System suddenly appeared.
Not blue.
Not cheerful.
The interface was completely black.
Red letters filled the screen.
[CRITICAL ERROR]
[UNAUTHORIZED ENTITY DETECTED]
[HOST MEMORY RESTORATION: FORCED]
Rin screamed. His knees buckled. Kaelith caught him.
"Rin!"
The world exploded into light. He saw everything. A thousand timelines.
A thousand endings. A thousand versions of Kaelith. A thousand versions of himself.
Ji-ho. Lucien.
Vorak. Selara.
Aiden. Noctis.
The Observer. The God.
And finally...
A throne.
Someone sat upon it. A figure whose face Rin couldn’t see.
But the voice... He recognized. It was the voice from his dreams.
The voice that had whispered to him before he woke in the meadow.
Welcome, Host.
Rin’s eyes widened.
"No..."
The figure leaned forward.
You finally remembered me.
The vision shattered. Rin woke on the floor. Kaelith was kneeling beside him.
"Rin!"
Rin gasped for air. The room was normal again. The snow was falling. The woman was gone.
The bells had stopped. Kaelith’s hand was still gripping his shoulder.
"Look at me."
Rin stared at him. His face was pale. Kaelith’s voice softened.
"You’re safe."
Rin shook his head.
"No."
"Rin."
"No."
He pushed himself upright.
"I know who the System is."
Kaelith froze.
"What?"
Rin stared at the black screen still hovering before him. The System didn’t disappear.
It remained. Silent. Waiting. Rin whispered:
"It’s not helping me survive."
Kaelith’s expression darkened.
"What is it doing?"
Rin looked at him. His voice barely escaped.
"It’s watching."
The screen flickered.
One final message appeared.
[Correction.]
[Host is beginning to remember.]
[Observer status: COMPROMISED.]
[God status: AWARE.]
[Timeline reset...]
[Cancelled.]
A final line appeared.
[For the first time...]
[He is afraid.]
The screen disappeared. Rin and Kaelith stared at each other.
Neither spoke.
Then, somewhere deep beneath the fortress...
Something laughed.
Not Noctis.
Not the System.
Not the woman in the snow.
Something much older.
Something that had been waiting.
And for the first time since Rin had arrived in this world...
Kaelith reached for his hand.
Not as a General.
Not as a protector.
Not as the supposed Male Lead.
Just as Kaelith.
Rin looked down at their joined hands. Then quietly held on. Outside the fortress...
The snow continued falling. But beneath the mountain...
A pair of golden eyes opened. And a voice whispered:
"Finally."
"The story has begun."
