The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 26: The One Who Remembers

  • Next Chapter

The room was silent.

Not the comfortable kind. Not the silence of night.

It was the silence between two people standing on opposite sides of a lifetime.

Rin still held the dagger. Noctis still stood near the window.

Neither of them moved.

The moonlight spilling through the glass painted the Witness in silver.

For the first time... Rin truly looked at him.

He had expected a monster. Something ancient. Something terrifying.

Instead... The man before him looked painfully human.

His black robes were elegant but worn. The cuffs had been repaired more than once.

His silver hair fell untidily around his face, as if he had long ago stopped caring what he looked like.

But it was his eyes... Those impossible silver eyes...

They carried an exhaustion Rin had never seen before.

Not the exhaustion of someone who hadn’t slept.

The exhaustion of someone who had lived... Far too long.

"...You’re staring."

Rin blinked.

"I..."

He quickly looked away.

"I was expecting someone... scarier."

A quiet laugh escaped Noctis.

"I used to be."

"...Used to?"

"Hatred changes people."

He smiled faintly.

"So does grief."

Another silence settled between them.

Rin finally lowered the dagger. Not completely.

Just enough. Noctis noticed. He looked genuinely relieved.

"...Thank you."

Rin frowned.

"For what?"

"For believing, even a little..."

His smile was bittersweet.

"...that I won’t hurt you."

"I don’t."

"No?"

"I just..."

Rin searched for the right words.

"...don’t think you came here to kill me."

Noctis tilted his head.

"What makes you think that?"

"You’ve had plenty of chances. You stood outside the fortress. You entered my room. You were standing behind me."

He looked directly into Noctis’ eyes.

"If you wanted me dead... You wouldn’t still be talking."

Noctis laughed. Warmly. The sound made the room feel strangely alive.

"You’ve always been frighteningly observant."

Rin sighed.

"There you go again."

"What?"

"Talking like we’ve known each other forever."

Noctis’ smile slowly disappeared.

"We have."

"...No. You haven’t."

"...You have."

Rin rubbed his temples.

"This is giving me a headache."

"It usually does."

"...Seriously?"

"You always hated conversations that broke reality."

Rin groaned.

"I don’t even know what that means."

"I know."

Noctis looked away.

"...You never do."

The wind gently brushed against the window. Snow continued to fall beyond the fortress walls.

Noctis quietly watched it.

"I missed snow."

Rin frowned.

"...There’s snow every winter."

"No."

The Witness slowly shook his head.

"I haven’t seen winter in a very long time."

"...How is that possible?"

"I stopped watching the seasons."

"Why?"

"They reminded me of you."

Rin stared.

"...Me?"

"You loved winter."

"I don’t."

"You will."

The certainty in Noctis’ voice was unsettling.

"You always do."

Rin hesitated.

Then... He sat down. Not because he trusted Noctis.

Because his legs suddenly felt weak. To his surprise...

Noctis didn’t remain standing over him.

Instead... He quietly sat on the floor across the room.

Keeping several meters between them. Almost as though he feared invading Rin’s space.

"You don’t have to sit so far away."

The words escaped before Rin could think.

Noctis looked up. His expression softened.

"I know."

"...Then why?"

A long silence.

Finally—

"Because..."

He smiled sadly.

"...the last thing I ever want... is for you to feel trapped."

Something about that answer... Made Rin’s chest tighten.

"...Can I ask you something?"

"You can ask me anything."

"Will you answer?"

"I’ll answer what I’m allowed to."

Rin immediately caught the wording.

"...Allowed?"

Noctis laughed quietly.

"You noticed."

"What does that mean?"

Instead of answering... Noctis looked toward the ceiling.

"As powerful as I may seem... I’m still bound by rules."

"The Witnesses?"

"Yes."

"...Who made those rules?"

Noctis’ smile disappeared.

"HE did."

Rin already knew who he meant.

"The God."

Noctis gave a single nod.

"Tell me about the Witnesses."

For a long moment... Noctis simply looked at him. Almost proudly.

"You’ve never asked that first before."

"...There’s a first time?"

"In one life... You tried to stab me before asking questions."

Rin coughed awkwardly.

"...That sounds like me."

"You missed."

"...Good."

"No."

Rin blinked.

"No?"

"You accidentally stabbed Kaelith instead."

Silence.

"...I WHAT?"

Noctis burst into laughter. Real laughter. The kind that forced him to cover his face for a moment.

"I spent three days apologizing to him."

"You apologized?"

"He kept glaring at me."

"...I don’t believe this."

"You shouldn’t."

"It’s one of my favorite memories."

Rin couldn’t stop himself. He laughed. Not because he believed the story.

Because imagining Kaelith getting accidentally stabbed by him... Was somehow believable.

When the laughter faded... Noctis simply watched him.

Quietly.

His smile never left.

"...What?"

"I missed hearing that."

Rin’s smile faltered.

"Hearing what?"

"You laugh."

The room became quiet again. Noctis looked down at his hands.

"I was beginning to forget what it sounded like."

Rin swallowed.

"...How long?"

Noctis didn’t pretend not to understand.

"How long have you known me?"

The Witness looked toward the moon.

"I don’t know anymore."

" Years?"

"Longer."

"Centuries?"

"Longer."

"...Thousands?"

Noctis smiled faintly.

"I stopped counting."

"...That’s impossible."

"I thought so too."

His silver eyes reflected the moonlight.

"Until I watched civilizations disappear. Languages die. Mountains become oceans. And still..."

He looked back at Rin.

"...you were born again."

Rin couldn’t breathe for a moment.

"...Every loop?"

"Every single one. And every time..."

Noctis’ voice became almost a whisper.

"...I hoped."

"Hoped for what?"

"That this would be the one... where you lived."

The words lingered between them.

Heavy. Honest. Painfully honest.

Rin searched Noctis’ face for any sign of deception.

He found none. Only sadness. An endless sadness.

"...Why?" he finally asked.

Noctis frowned.

"Why... what?"

"Why do you care so much?"

The Witness didn’t answer immediately.

Instead... He looked at Rin as though the question itself surprised him.

"...You’ve never asked me that."

"...I’m asking now."

A small smile appeared.

"You’re curious."

"I want the truth."

"...The truth."

Noctis repeated the words softly. As if tasting them.

"The truth..."

He looked away.

"...is dangerous."

"I’ve noticed."

"No."

His silver eyes met Rin’s again.

"You haven’t."

The warmth in the room seemed to disappear.

"You think you’ve discovered the edges of this story."

His voice was calm. Gentle.

"But you’ve only seen..."

A long pause.

"...the first page."

Rin felt his heartbeat quicken.

"What are you trying to say?"

Noctis leaned back against the stone wall.

Closed his eyes. And whispered...

"The story everyone believes... isn’t the story that happened."

The words settled over the room. Rin didn’t speak. He simply stared at Noctis.

"...What do you mean?"

The Witness opened his eyes.

"The story everyone believes... is the story your God wanted remembered."

Rin frowned.

"Our god?"

"No."

A bitter smile touched Noctis’s lips.

"...Your jailer."

Silence. Rin slowly stood.

"You keep calling Him that."

"Because that is what He is."

"You hate Him."

"No."

The answer came so quickly that Rin blinked.

"I hated Him once."

A pause.

"Hate is too small a word now."

The room seemed colder. The candles remained dark. Only the moon illuminated the space between them.

"I served Him."

Noctis said quietly.

"I believed every word He spoke."

"You served... the god?"

"Long before kingdoms existed. Long before anyone built temples. I stood beside Him."

Rin’s eyes widened.

"You knew Him?"

"I knew the one He used to be."

Noctis looked toward the ceiling.

"He loved creating. He loved watching life grow. He laughed often."

His expression slowly hardened.

"Then..."

"He became obsessed. With perfection."

Silence.

"The first world disappointed Him. So He erased it. The second failed. He erased that one too. The third. The fourth. The hundredth. The thousandth."

Every sentence sounded heavier than the last.

"Every time He reset the world... He convinced Himself the next version would be better."

Rin felt a chill crawl down his spine.

"...And the people?"

Noctis smiled sadly.

"They were never asked."

Another long silence.

"I thought..."

Noctis whispered.

"...if I obeyed Him... if I watched quietly... He would eventually stop."

His silver eyes lost focus.

"I was wrong. So I asked Him. When will this end?’"

Rin listened without moving.

"He answered..."

Noctis’s voice became eerily calm.

"’When I finally create a perfect ending.’"

A hollow laugh escaped him.

"Do you know what perfection means to an immortal?"

Rin slowly shook his head.

"It means..."

"He never has to stop trying."

Rin lowered his gaze.

"So the Witnesses... are servants?"

"Were."

Noctis corrected gently.

"We were created to observe. To remember. To record every timeline. But never interfere."

"...And you disobeyed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Noctis smiled.

"Because of you."

The room became perfectly still. Rin’s heart skipped a beat.

"...Me?"

"The first time I saw you... You were crying. You weren’t a hero. You weren’t important. You were just..."

He laughed softly.

"...lost. You asked me where the nearest bakery was."

Rin frowned.

"...Seriously?"

"You were hungry. I had just watched a kingdom collapse. You looked at me and said..."

He smiled to himself.

"’You look like you need bread more than I do.’"

Rin couldn’t help smiling.

"...That... does sound like something I’d say."

"It is."

"You’ve always believed people deserved kindness... before they deserved judgment."

Noctis looked at him with quiet admiration.

"I had watched countless lives. They all blended together. Kings. Generals. Mages. They all became names. But..."

He met Rin’s eyes.

"...you remembered strangers. You learned servants’ names. You thanked cooks. You apologized to soldiers. You once spent an entire afternoon helping a stable boy search for a lost kitten."

Rin laughed awkwardly.

"I really did that?"

"In seventeen different timelines."

The smile faded from Noctis’s face.

"And every time... you died believing you hadn’t done enough."

Rin swallowed.

"You keep saying that."

"What?"

"That I die."

Noctis closed his eyes.

"I do."

"No."

Rin took a slow step forward.

"You say it like..."

His voice trembled.

"...like you watched it happen."

Noctis didn’t answer.

Instead... He reached into his robe. This time...

He withdrew something wrapped in faded cloth. He unfolded it carefully.

Inside rested a simple wooden ring. It was cracked. Old. Smooth from years of being held.

"You carved this."

Rin stared.

"I’ve never—"

"I know."

Noctis gently turned the ring between his fingers.

"You said you couldn’t afford silver. So wood would have to do."

A quiet smile.

"It was crooked. You apologized for an hour."

Rin looked at the ring. For a brief second...

A strange sensation passed through him. Warm sunlight.

The smell of fresh grass. Someone laughing. Hands covered in wood shavings.

The image vanished instantly. Rin staggered back. His head throbbed.

"What..."

He pressed a hand against his temple.

"...What was that?"

Noctis was beside him in an instant. Then stopped himself. Only an arm’s length away.

"I shouldn’t have shown you."

"I’m fine."

"No."

His voice was full of regret.

"Your memories are trying to surface."

"My memories?"

"The ones He buried."

Rin’s breathing became uneven.

"...I saw something."

"I know."

"I heard..."

He frowned.

"...someone laughing."

Noctis smiled sadly.

"That was you."

Silence filled the room again. Finally...

Rin asked the question that had been growing inside him since they met.

"...Why me?"

Noctis looked genuinely confused.

"What do you mean?"

"Out of everyone. Out of every person you’ve watched. Why do you care about me?"

The Witness looked at him for a long time. His expression softened into something almost unbearably gentle.

"When people speak of eternity... They imagine never-ending time."

He slowly shook his head.

"They’re wrong."

"Eternity isn’t measured in years. It’s measured... by the person you wait for."

Rin’s breath caught. Noctis smiled.

"I waited."

Silence.

"I kept waiting."

His eyes shimmered in the moonlight.

"And every time the world ended..."

"I hoped... that the next Rin... would finally live."

A tear escaped before Noctis noticed. He wiped it away almost absently.

"I’m sorry."

Rin stared.

"...Why are you apologizing?"

"I promised myself..."

He laughed quietly.

"...I wouldn’t cry this time."

A sudden pain exploded behind Rin’s eyes.

He gasped. The room blurred. For the briefest instant...

Noctis wasn’t standing before him. He was laughing beneath blooming cherry trees.

Then—

He was covered in blood.

Then—

He was kneeling beside Rin’s lifeless body.

Then—

Darkness.

Rin stumbled. Noctis caught him instinctively. The moment their hands touched—

A blinding flash tore through Rin’s mind.

A voice.

His own.

Soft.

Happy.

"No matter how many times the world changes... Find me again."

The vision shattered. Rin tore his hand away, breathing hard.

"What..."

His entire body trembled.

"...What was that?"

Noctis looked down at his own hand. His voice was barely audible.

"A promise."

Rin stared at him.

"I made that?"

"You did."

"I don’t remember."

"I know."

Another knock echoed faintly somewhere beyond the room.

Distant. Someone was running through the corridor. Noctis looked toward the door.

"They’re close."

Rin instinctively reached out.

"Wait."

The Witness looked back.

"...Will you tell me everything?"

A soft smile appeared.

"No."

Rin frowned.

"No?"

"If I give you every answer... you’ll stop asking the questions that matter."

He stepped backward. The shadows around him stirred.

"But I will tell you one truth."

Rin waited.

Noctis’s silver eyes met his.

"The greatest lie your God ever told..."

"...was that love can be erased."

He smiled sadly.

"He erased your memories."

A pause.

"...Not your heart."

Footsteps thundered outside the room. Kaelith’s voice rang through the corridor.

"Rin!"

Noctis closed his eyes.

"...He’s here."

The shadows began gathering around him. And for the first time...

There was unmistakable sadness in his voice.

"I suppose... this is where he finds you again."
