The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!
Chapter 33: The Choice That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist
The first thing Rin noticed was the silence.
Not peaceful silence. Not the comfortable silence that sometimes settled between friends who had nothing left to say.
This silence felt... Expectant.
As though the entire world was waiting to see what he would do next.
Rin stood in the center of the ancient chamber, staring at the empty throne. The crack running through it continued to glow faintly.
The God was gone. But his final words remained.
"If you choose him again..."
"I will make you watch him die."
Rin swallowed. Noctis stood several steps away.
His long silver hair fell over his shoulders, illuminated by the strange golden light coming from beneath the floor.
Sol stood beside Rin. Aiden remained near the entrance. Nobody spoke.
Finally, Rin sighed.
"So."
Sol glanced at him.
"So?"
"We’re going back."
"Yes."
"To the fortress."
"Yes."
"Where Kaelith probably thinks I’ve been kidnapped by an ancient god."
Sol nodded.
"Probably."
Rin scratched his head.
"And we’re just going to walk in and say, ’Sorry, I disappeared into an alternate reality and discovered that existence itself is complicated’?"
Aiden frowned.
"That is technically what happened."
Rin looked at him.
"You are not helping."
"I wasn’t trying to."
Sol snorted.
Rin turned toward Noctis.
"And you."
Noctis raised an eyebrow.
"Me?"
"You’re coming with us."
Noctis looked surprised.
"You want me to?"
Rin stared at him.
"Of course."
Noctis hesitated.
"You realize what that means."
"That I’ll have to explain why I suddenly have a very tall silver-haired demon following me?"
"I’m not very tall."
Rin looked him up and down.
"You are."
Noctis sighed.
"Compared to you."
"Exactly."
A small smile appeared on Noctis’s face.
It disappeared almost immediately.
"Rin."
"What?"
"You understand that Kaelith..."
"I know."
Noctis looked at him.
"He loves you."
Rin froze.
Sol slowly turned his head. Aiden suddenly became very interested in the wall. Rin’s face warmed.
"We don’t know that."
Noctis stared.
"He nearly killed three council members for insulting you."
"That could have been political."
"He carried you through a battlefield."
"Practical."
"He sleeps outside your door when you’re injured."
"Security."
Noctis blinked.
"You really don’t understand men."
Sol raised a finger.
"Technically, big brother is the least observant person I’ve ever met."
Rin looked at him.
"You’re supposed to support me."
"I’m supporting the truth."
Rin groaned.
"This is going to be a disaster."
Noctis smiled.
"Probably."
The journey back began before sunrise. The mountains were still dark when they reached the surface. Snow covered the landscape. The fortress was visible in the distance.
Rin stopped. Something felt wrong. He couldn’t explain it.
The fortress... Looked smaller. Older. Different.
He blinked.
"Did we take the wrong path?"
Aiden shook his head.
"No."
"Then why does it look..."
Rin couldn’t find the word. Sol finished for him.
"Changed."
Rin looked at him.
"You see it too?"
"Yes."
Noctis stared toward the fortress.
"The timeline moved."
Rin frowned.
"While we were gone?"
"Yes."
Aiden’s expression darkened.
"Time doesn’t move normally inside the Archive."
"How long were we gone?"
Sol looked toward the sky.
"Approximately six hours."
Rin sighed with relief.
"That’s not too bad."
Aiden shook his head.
"Outside..."
He paused.
"Three days have passed."
Rin stared.
"...What?"
Sol winced.
"That’s going to be a problem."
"Three days?"
"Yes."
Rin immediately started walking faster.
"Kaelith is going to kill me."
Noctis followed.
"Probably."
"Stop agreeing with that!"
The fortress was in chaos. Soldiers moved through the courtyard carrying weapons. Healers rushed between buildings.
Several sections of the outer wall had been repaired. Rin stopped at the gate.
"What happened?"
A soldier recognized him. His eyes widened.
"General!"
The shout echoed across the courtyard. Every soldier turned. Rin immediately wished he had chosen a less dramatic entrance.
Within seconds... People were running toward him.
"He’s alive!"
"Call the General!"
"The Host returned!"
"A demon is with him!"
Rin froze.
"A demon?"
Noctis raised an eyebrow. Sol whispered:
"That’s you."
"I know."
"I just wanted to make sure."
Rin glared at him. A familiar voice cut through the chaos.
"Rin."
Everyone fell silent. Kaelith stood at the top of the fortress steps.
He looked exhausted. His armor was damaged. His hair was disheveled.
There were dark circles beneath his eyes. And his expression...
Rin had never seen it before. Relief. Pure, undeniable relief.
Kaelith descended the steps. Slowly. He stopped directly in front of Rin.
For several seconds... Neither spoke. Then Kaelith reached out. His hand touched Rin’s shoulder.
"You are alive."
Rin smiled awkwardly.
"Yeah."
Kaelith closed his eyes. His hand tightened slightly.
"You disappeared."
"I know."
"For three days."
"I know."
"I searched every chamber."
"I know."
"I thought..."
Kaelith stopped.
Rin’s smile disappeared.
"You thought I was dead."
Kaelith opened his eyes.
"Yes."
Rin didn’t know what to say. So he did the simplest thing.
He hugged him. Kaelith froze.
The courtyard became completely silent.
Sol’s mouth dropped open. Noctis stared. Aiden looked away.
Rin realized what he had done. Too late.
Kaelith slowly wrapped his arms around him. His voice was barely audible.
"Don’t do that again."
Rin closed his eyes.
"I’ll try."
"Try harder."
"Okay."
They stayed like that for several seconds.
Then—
Someone coughed. Very loudly.
Rin immediately stepped away. Noctis stood nearby. Arms crossed.
Expression unreadable. Kaelith looked at him. Noctis looked at Kaelith.
The temperature seemed to drop. Rin looked between them.
"Oh no."
Sol whispered:
"This is going to be entertaining."
Rin stepped between them.
"Okay."
Both men looked at him.
"Before anyone starts a demon-human territorial dispute..."
Kaelith raised an eyebrow.
"...I have something to explain."
Noctis smiled.
"You do."
Kaelith’s gaze hardened.
"Who is he?"
Rin opened his mouth. Nothing came out. Sol raised his hand.
"Technically—"
Rin grabbed his wrist.
"No."
Sol blinked.
"But—"
"No."
Kaelith looked at Rin.
"Who?"
Rin sighed.
"His name is Noctis."
"I know."
Rin stared.
"You know him?"
Kaelith nodded.
"The fortress records mention him."
Noctis’s expression changed.
"Records?"
Kaelith looked at him.
"You were listed as missing."
Noctis’s eyes narrowed.
"From when?"
"Several centuries ago."
Silence. Rin slowly looked at Noctis.
"You were here?"
Noctis didn’t answer. Kaelith continued.
"The records say a silver-haired demon entered the fortress during the First War."
Noctis’s face became unreadable.
"I remember."
Rin’s heart skipped.
"What happened?"
Kaelith looked between them.
"He disappeared."
Noctis nodded.
"I wasn’t alone."
Rin stared.
"Who was with you?"
Noctis looked at him.
"You."
Rin’s breath caught. Kaelith’s expression hardened.
"What?"
Rin turned toward him.
"I..."
He didn’t know how to explain. Not yet.
There were too many secrets. Too many pieces. Then Sol stepped forward.
"Maybe we should move this conversation somewhere private."
Kaelith looked at him.
"Who are you?"
Sol smiled.
"That’s complicated."
Kaelith frowned. Rin sighed.
"He’s my System."
Kaelith stared.
"Your System."
"Yes."
"In human form?"
"Yes."
Kaelith looked at Rin. Rin nodded.
"Long story."
Kaelith looked back at Sol.
"You have a face."
Sol smiled.
"Thank you."
"That wasn’t a compliment."
"I’ll take it anyway."
Rin covered his face.
"Why is everyone like this?"
The council chamber was sealed.
Only Rin, Kaelith, Noctis, Sol, Aiden, Lucien, Vorak, Selara, and Elder Veyron were allowed inside.
Rin sat at the table. He looked around. The same room. The same maps. The same people. But everything felt different. Because Rin was different.
He knew things now. He knew Sol was his brother. He knew Noctis remembered every timeline. He knew the God had cursed them.
And he knew the BL System wasn’t his enemy. Sol stood beside him. A small blue window appeared.
[SYSTEM STATUS: STABLE.]
Rin smiled.
"You’re feeling better."
Sol nodded.
"The World repaired some of the damage."
"Good."
A second window appeared.
[NOTICE.]
Rin waited.
[Host has accumulated excessive emotional damage.]
Rin blinked.
"...What?"
[Recommendation: Hug someone.]
Rin stared.
"Sol."
"Yes?"
"Did you program that?"
"No."
The System added another message.
[Suggested target: emotionally repressed demon general.]
Kaelith stared at the screen.
Rin burst out laughing. Even Lucien covered his mouth. Vorak openly laughed. Selara looked confused.
Elder Veyron sighed. Noctis’s mouth twitched. Kaelith looked at Rin.
"...Your System is disrespectful."
Rin smiled.
"I missed this."
Sol crossed his arms.
"I have no idea what you’re talking about."
The screen changed.
[LIE DETECTED.]
Sol looked offended.
"Traitor."
Rin laughed harder. For a moment... The darkness lifted.
Then the screen changed again. The humor vanished.
[WARNING.]
[GOD’S CURSE DETECTED.]
[NOCTIS — ACTIVE.]
[RIN — ACTIVE.]
[SOL — ACTIVE.]
Three names.
Three curses.
Three survivors.
A final line appeared.
[CURSE ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.]
Rin frowned.
"Unknown?"
Sol stared.
"That shouldn’t be possible."
"Why?"
"Because I know where the curse came from."
Noctis looked at him.
"The God."
Sol shook his head.
"Not exactly."
The room fell silent. Rin leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
Sol’s expression became serious.
"The God didn’t create the curse."
Everyone froze.
"Then who did?"
Sol looked toward the ceiling.
"I don’t know."
Aiden stood abruptly.
"You’re sure?"
"Yes."
"The God only activated it."
Rin’s stomach dropped.
"Then someone else created it."
Sol nodded.
"And that someone..."
His voice became quieter.
"...was already waiting for us before the First Timeline."
Noctis’s expression darkened.
"That’s impossible."
Sol looked at him.
"Is it?"
Noctis didn’t answer. Aiden slowly sat down.
"There was one person."
Rin looked at him.
"Who?"
Aiden’s face had gone pale.
"The one person who knew what would happen before the God did."
"Who?"
Aiden looked toward the door.
"Your mother."
Rin froze. The room became silent.
"My..."
He couldn’t finish. Aiden nodded.
"The First Rin’s mother."
Rin’s heart began pounding.
"What does she have to do with this?"
Aiden didn’t answer. Instead, he looked at Noctis. Noctis’s face had lost all color.
"You know."
Rin looked at him.
"Noctis."
Noctis closed his eyes.
"I knew her."
Rin stared.
"When?"
"Before I met you."
"What did she tell you?"
Noctis opened his eyes.
His expression was filled with something Rin had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear of the God. Fear of the truth.
"She told me..."
He paused.
"...that one day you would fall in love with a demon."
Rin’s breath stopped. Kaelith looked at Noctis.
"And?"
Noctis swallowed.
"She said that love would destroy the God."
Silence. Rin whispered:
"Then why would the God punish us?"
Noctis looked directly at him.
"Because he was never afraid of your love."
"Then what was he afraid of?"
Noctis’s voice dropped.
"He was afraid of what your love would reveal."
Rin stared.
"What?"
Noctis looked toward Sol. Then Aiden. Then Kaelith. Finally... Back to Rin.
"That the World itself chose you."
The candles went out. Every System window vanished.
And in the darkness...
A voice whispered directly into Rin’s ear.
"Finally."
Rin froze. He knew that voice.
The God. But this time...
There was no anger. No hatred. Only fear.
"You are remembering too quickly."
Then another voice answered.
Not the God. Not Sol. Not Noctis.
The World.
"Because he is ready."
The entire fortress shook. Kaelith immediately drew his sword. Noctis summoned dark magic. Sol stepped in front of Rin.
Aiden raised his hands. And Rin...
Simply stood there. For the first time... He wasn’t afraid.
Because he finally understood something. The God had spent countless timelines trying to punish him for loving a demon.
But the God had made one mistake. He had given Rin exactly what he needed.
Someone worth fighting for. And now...
Rin intended to choose them.
All of them.
Even if the entire world had to change with him.
