The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!
Chapter 22: The Silent Watcher
The room refused to grow quiet. Not because of noise.
Because every time Rin closed his eyes... He saw the figure.
Standing alone in the snow. Smiling. Waiting. He sat upright in bed.
"...I definitely saw it."
The moonlight spilled through the window. He walked over. Slowly. Nothing. Only white snow stretching across the valley.
No black robes. No pale eyes. No footprints. Rin let out a long breath.
"I’m imagining things."
He returned to bed. Five minutes later... He was standing at the window again.
"..."
Nothing. Another few minutes passed. He checked again. Still nothing.
"I’ve officially lost my mind."
Blue light flickered beside him. The System appeared.
[Notice]
Host’s stress level is unhealthy.
Recommendation: Go to sleep.
Rin stared at it.
"...You’re seriously telling me to sleep?"
Correct.
Sleep deprivation reduces survival rate by 17%.
"...You literally threatened to kill me two weeks ago."
A brief pause.
Different circumstances.
"...You’re unbelievable."
The blue screen remained motionless.
Several seconds passed. Then another line appeared.
Acknowledged.
Rin covered his face with both hands.
"I can’t believe I’m arguing with floating text."
The System vanished without another word. The silence somehow felt even louder. Unable to stay inside any longer, Rin pulled on a cloak and stepped into the corridor.
The fortress slept lightly. Torches burned low. A few guards nodded as he passed. The cold greeted him the moment he climbed onto the outer wall.
Snow drifted lazily through the night. Someone was already there.
Kaelith.
He stood at the edge of the battlements, hands resting behind his back as he watched the mountains.
He didn’t turn around.
"I heard your footsteps."
Rin smiled weakly.
"Of course you did."
For a while... Neither of them spoke. The wind carried only the distant howl of the mountains. Finally Rin broke the silence.
"You couldn’t sleep either?"
Kaelith answered without hesitation.
"No."
"...Bad dreams?"
"No."
"Worried?"
A pause.
"...Yes."
Rin looked toward the valley.
"...Me too."
Neither asked what the other was worried about. Neither needed to. The silence between them felt... comfortable. Not empty. Shared. A sudden shout shattered the quiet.
"General!"
Both turned instantly. A scout sprinted across the wall, nearly slipping on the snow. He stopped only long enough to catch one desperate breath.
"The figure..."
Kaelith’s expression hardened.
"It moved."
Within moments... The western watchtower filled with soldiers. Every eye searched the valley below.
"There."
One guard pointed. The Witness still stood exactly where it had been before. Motionless. Silent. The same black robes. The same impossible stillness. Only one thing had changed.
Yesterday... It had faced the fortress. Now... It faced the forest.
No footprints surrounded it. No disturbed snow. No signs it had ever taken a single step.
It had simply... Turned.
Selara frowned.
"That’s impossible."
Lucien adjusted his glasses.
"There are no tracks."
Vorak narrowed his eyes.
"It should have left something."
Even Kaelith remained silent. Only Aiden reacted differently. His face lost what little color it had.
"...Too fast."
Kaelith heard him.
"You know something."
Aiden kept staring toward the distant figure. His voice barely rose above the wind.
"...It found one."
Rin frowned.
"Found what?"
Aiden didn’t answer.
He simply continued staring. As though the answer terrified him too much to say aloud. The fortress dining hall was unusually quiet. No one seemed interested in breakfast.
Vorak disagreed.
"You’ll eat."
Selara sighed.
"I’m not hungry."
"You’ll eat."
Lucien lifted his teacup.
"I’m perfectly fin—"
Vorak placed an entire roasted cut of meat onto his plate.
"You’ll eat."
Rin looked down at the enormous portion now sitting in front of him.
"...I don’t think stress can survive this much protein."
Vorak folded his arms proudly.
"Exactly."
Lucien quietly slid a steaming cup of tea toward Rin.
"For your nerves."
Selara placed a small pouch beside it.
"Medicine."
"In case you don’t sleep again."
Rin blinked.
"...Thanks?"
Without saying a word...
Kaelith reached across the table.
He placed a piece of freshly baked bread beside Rin’s plate.
Warm. Still smelling of the oven.
"..."
Rin slowly looked around the table.
Tea.
Medicine.
Bread.
"...Why am I suddenly everybody’s emotional support human?"
Silence.
Then several nearby soldiers coughed suspiciously. One leaned toward another.
"Did you see that?"
"The General gave him bread."
"I saw."
"...That’s serious."
By lunchtime... The rumor had evolved dramatically.
"The General is courting the human."
"No."
"I heard he personally picked the bread."
"I heard he smiled while doing it."
"He smiled?"
"Twice."
The story somehow continued growing. Later that afternoon... Rin visited the infirmary.
Ji-ho lay awake. He looked exhausted. Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.
But...
He wasn’t panicking. He simply stared at the ceiling.
"You came."
Rin pulled up a chair.
"You look terrible."
Ji-ho gave a tired laugh.
"I’ve looked worse."
"...Fair."
For several minutes... Neither spoke. Then Ji-ho quietly whispered,
"I remembered something."
Rin immediately leaned forward.
"What?"
Ji-ho closed his eyes.
"It isn’t about Kaelith."
"...Okay."
"It isn’t about the loops either."
Rin waited. Ji-ho swallowed.
"It’s about them...The Witnesses."
Rin’s heartbeat quickened.
"What are they?"
Ji-ho’s fingers trembled against the blanket.
"They never attack."
Silence.
"They only count."
Rin frowned.
"...Count what?"
Ji-ho slowly opened his eyes. They were filled with fear.
"People..."
His voice almost disappeared.
"...who shouldn’t exist."
The room fell completely silent. Rin couldn’t find a single word. Did that mean... Him?
Ji-ho? Someone else? Before he could ask another question...
Ji-ho had already closed his eyes again. As though remembering those few words had exhausted him completely.
Night returned. Snow covered the mountains once more. The council chamber remained awake despite the hour.
Everyone looked tired. No one suggested sleeping. The doors burst open.
The same scout stumbled inside. His face had gone completely pale. He struggled to breathe.
"The Witness..."
Every person in the room stood. Kaelith stepped forward.
"What happened?"
The scout swallowed hard.
"...It’s gone."
Silence.
"We searched the valley. Nothing. No tracks. No magic. No body. It simply...vanished."
A cold weight settled over the chamber. Then... The scout slowly raised his trembling hands.
Something rested across his palms. A single black feather.
Rin froze. His blood ran cold. He knew that feather. He had seen it before.
Not here. In the dream. Every eye in the room slowly turned toward him. Before anyone could speak...
Blue light exploded across the chamber. The System appeared. Not calmly. Not smoothly.
Its screen flickered violently. Letters broke apart. Reformed. Collapsed again.
Then—
A warning filled the air.
WARNING
Witness proximity detected.
...
Correction.
...
Witness already inside fortress. The blue screen went black. No one moved.
Somewhere...
Deep within the fortress...
A single wooden door creaked open.
