Chapter 21: The Third Loop (Part III)

Nobody moved.

"Today... is your twelfth."

The words echoed through the council chamber. Twelve days. Rin instinctively counted backward.

The forest. Meeting Kaelith. The fortress. The banquet. The siege. Ji-ho. The darkness. The dream.

Only twelve days. It felt like months.

"...You’re wrong."

His own voice sounded distant.

"I’m still alive."

Aiden nodded.

"I know."

"You just said—"

"I said the others weren’t."

"The others..."

Rin struggled with the words.

"...were me?"

Aiden hesitated. Then gave the smallest nod.

"Not copies. Not illusions. You. The version born each time the story began again."

Silence settled over the room. Even Elder Veyron looked unable to speak. Lucien was the first to break it.

"...You claim history has repeated itself."

"Many times. And each time..."

He looked toward Rin.

"...he dies."

Aiden lowered his eyes.

"Usually."

The single word hit harder than a lengthy explanation ever could.

Kaelith sheathed his sword. The metallic click echoed through the chamber. Every head turned toward him.

"Enough."

His voice remained calm. But beneath it... There was steel.

"You are asking him to carry memories that are not his."

Aiden looked at him.

"They become his eventually."

"Not today."

"No. Not today."

For a brief moment, genuine respect passed between the two men. As though they had reached the same conclusion from different paths.

Rin rubbed his temples.

"I have one question."

Aiden smiled faintly.

"Only one?"

"I’m pacing myself."

"...Wise."

Rin took a slow breath.

"If there have been so many loops..."

He looked directly at Aiden.

"...why is this one different?"

The smile disappeared.

"Because..."

Aiden glanced toward Kaelith.

"...he smiled."

Silence. Nobody understood. Except... Rin.

His thoughts drifted back. Kaelith laughing—barely. Sharing bread. Standing in front of him without hesitation.

The balcony .-"If destiny can change once..."

The dream. - "You came earlier this time."

"...You’re saying..."

Rin whispered.

"...the small things matter."

"The small things matter first."

Aiden nodded.

"They’re the only things that ever change. The great battles... The wars... The kingdoms...They always follow. But people..."

He smiled sadly.

"...people choose."

Kaelith remained expressionless. Yet something in his eyes shifted. Almost too subtle to notice.

A soft chime interrupted the silence.

The System.

It appeared slowly this time. Not with its usual confidence.

Almost... Reluctantly.

Rin frowned.

"What?"

The loading icon spun. Then stopped. For the first time... Instead of percentages... The System displayed a single sentence.

Future cannot be calculated.

Everyone stared. Even Aiden. Then...

To Rin’s surprise...

He laughed. Not mockingly. Not bitterly. Genuinely.

"I never thought I’d see that."

Rin looked between the screen and Aiden.

"What’s so funny?"

"The System. It hates uncertainty."

"...You’re telling me."

"It’s terrified."

The blue interface flickered violently.

Emotional analysis unavailable.

Aiden grinned.

"There. It lied again."

The System vanished without another word.

A knock sounded at the chamber doors. One of the guards entered hurriedly.

"General!"

Kaelith turned.

"What is it?"

"The western watchtower..."

The young soldier struggled to catch his breath.

"...reported movement."

Selara immediately straightened.

"Monsters?"

"We don’t know."

"How many?"

The guard swallowed.

"...One."

Vorak frowned.

"One?"

"Yes."

"It isn’t attacking. What is it doing?"

The guard looked visibly unsettled.

"...Standing."

Silence.

"Standing?"

"It has been facing the fortress for over an hour. It hasn’t moved. It hasn’t spoken. It hasn’t blinked."

A chill crept through the room. Aiden closed his eyes.

"...Too soon."

Kaelith noticed.

"You know what it is."

"...Yes."

"What?"

Aiden opened his eyes again. His voice was barely above a whisper.

"A Witness."

The name meant nothing to anyone. Yet the way he said it... Made everyone wish it had.

Night fell quickly over the mountains. Snow drifted silently through the darkness.

Far below... Beyond the range of the watchtowers...

A lone figure stood in the snow.

Motionless. Wrapped in black robes. Its face hidden.

Its hands folded calmly before it. It wasn’t looking at the walls. It wasn’t looking at the soldiers.

It was looking... At Rin’s window.

Without moving its head... It smiled beneath the hood.

Then... Very slowly...

It raised one hand. Not to attack. Not to cast magic. Simply...To wave.

Rin happened to glance toward the window.

For only a heartbeat. He saw it.

A distant silhouette.

Standing alone in the snow.

Watching him.

His blood turned to ice. He rushed toward the glass.

"Kaelith!"

The General reached the window almost instantly.

"What is it?"

"There!"

Rin pointed toward the white valley.

The snow stretched endlessly beneath the moonlight.

Empty. There was no figure. No footprints. Nothing. Only the wind.

Kaelith looked toward the horizon for a long moment. Then quietly rested a hand on Rin’s shoulder.

"I believe you."

Three simple words. No hesitation. No doubt. Rin slowly looked at him.

"You... do?"

Kaelith met his eyes.

"Yes."

He didn’t ask for proof. He didn’t question what Rin had seen. He simply believed him. For reasons neither of them fully understood.

Outside...

Far beyond the reach of the fortress lights...

Two pale white eyes opened in the darkness.

Watching.

Waiting.

Patient.
