The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 23: The Thing That Counts(Part I)

The blue screen vanished. No one moved.

The words it had left behind remained frozen in every mind.

Witness already inside fortress.

Silence pressed against the council chamber like an invisible weight. Even the crackling fireplace sounded unnaturally loud. Kaelith was the first to speak.

"Seal every gate."

His voice cut cleanly through the silence.

"Nobody enters."

A heartbeat later—

"Nobody leaves."

The guards snapped back to attention.

"Yes, General!"

The chamber erupted into motion. Messengers sprinted through the doors. Armor clattered.

Orders echoed through the stone corridors as soldiers hurried to every entrance. Within minutes, the heavy fortress bells began to ring.

Not the frantic rhythm of an attack. A slower... More deliberate sound. One every soldier recognized.

Lockdown.

Rin stood where he was, still staring at the empty space where the System had disappeared. His heartbeat refused to slow.

Inside. It was already inside. His mind kept replaying the warning.

Not approaching. Not nearby. Already inside. A cold shiver ran through him.

"What if..." he whispered.

No one answered.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

Outside...

Massive wooden gates slammed shut one after another.

Iron bars dropped into place. Chains rattled. Archers climbed the walls.

Watchfires were lit across every tower despite the late hour.

The fortress transformed from a home... Into a prison.

Vorak tightened the straps of his gauntlets.

"If it’s inside..."

He rested one hand on the handle of his axe.

"...then we’ll find it."

The confidence in his voice was reassuring. Almost.

Aiden looked toward the dark hallway beyond the council chamber.

"I hope so."

Three quiet words. Nothing more. Yet they stole what little comfort Vorak’s statement had created.

Vorak frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Aiden didn’t answer. He simply walked toward the nearest window and looked into the darkness beyond the walls.

Kaelith noticed. He noticed everything.

"You believe searching won’t matter."

It wasn’t a question. Aiden closed his eyes for a moment.

"When something wants to be found... It leaves traces."

He slowly opened them again.

"When it doesn’t..."

Silence.

"...you begin questioning whether it was ever there."

An hour later...

The search began. Teams of soldiers spread throughout the fortress. Every hallway. Every tower. Every storage room. Every stable. Every cellar. Every abandoned corridor beneath the old walls.

Nothing was ignored. Nothing was considered too small.

Kaelith personally organized every group.

"Never search alone. Report immediately. If anyone disappears..."

He paused.

"...don’t split up."

The soldiers exchanged uneasy glances. None of them questioned the order.

Rin insisted on helping. Kaelith looked at him for several seconds.

"No."

"I can help."

"No."

"I’m not staying in my room while everyone else—"

"You will stay with me."

Rin blinked.

"...That’s not really giving me a choice."

"No."

"...You’re becoming very efficient at this."

"I’ve had practice."

For the first time that night... The corner of Rin’s mouth lifted. Only slightly.

Kaelith noticed. He said nothing.

The fortress felt different. Not physically. The walls hadn’t changed. Neither had the halls. Yet every familiar corridor suddenly seemed...

Longer.

Darker.

Every shadow lingered a little too long. Every torch flickered a little strangely. Every distant sound demanded attention.

Footsteps echoed constantly. Sometimes they belonged to soldiers. Sometimes...

No one could find their source.

"Who’s there?"

A young guard raised his spear toward an empty intersection.

His partner hurried over.

"What happened?"

"I heard someone running."

The older soldier looked down the corridor.

Empty.

"No one’s here."

"I know what I heard."

"So do I."

Neither sounded convinced. Elsewhere... Another patrol stopped abruptly.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?"

"Someone whispered."

The second guard frowned.

"I didn’t hear anything."

"...Maybe I imagined it."

Neither of them believed that.

Rin noticed the pattern after the fourth report. Every few minutes... Someone claimed to hear footsteps.

Or breathing. Or whispers. Every single time... The corridor was empty.

No tracks. No open doors. Nothing.

It was as though the fortress itself had started playing tricks on everyone.

He hated it. Because he couldn’t tell whether that thought made any sense anymore.

Two veteran soldiers emerged from the eastern armory.

"Nothing."

"The roof?"

"Nothing."

"The basement?"

"Nothing."

One of them rubbed the back of his neck.

"...Still."

"What?"

"I keep feeling..."

He hesitated.

"...like someone is walking behind me."

His companion didn’t laugh.

"...Me too."

Hours passed. The search accomplished absolutely nothing.

No signs of intrusion. No broken locks. No disturbed snow beneath the windows. No magical residue. Nothing.

Lucien adjusted his glasses while examining another empty hallway.

"This defies reason."

Selara folded her arms.

"Which part?"

"All of it."

She couldn’t argue. Near midnight... Rin found himself staring down yet another deserted corridor.

Torchlight danced across ancient stone walls. The shadows stretched unnaturally long.

He exhaled slowly.

"I’m starting to think we’re chasing a ghost."

Blue light suddenly appeared beside him.

He jumped.

"...Don’t do that!"

The System ignored him.

Processing...

"...Processing what?"

No response.

The loading icon continued spinning. Longer than usual. Far longer.

Rin frowned.

"System?"

Nothing.

The icon spun once more.

Then—

Recommendation: Stay near General Kaelith.

Rin blinked.

"...That’s the mission?"

No.

"...Then why?"

Silence. Several seconds passed before another line slowly appeared. Almost... Reluctantly.

High survival probability.

Rin stared.

"...Are you serious?"

No answer.

"...You’re actually giving me survival advice now?"

The screen flickered. The letters briefly distorted before correcting themselves.

Current threat assessment exceeds previous calculations.

"...What does that mean?"

No response.

"...System?"

Another pause.

Then—

Unable to elaborate.

The blue light flickered violently.

For one brief moment... The text fragmented into symbols Rin couldn’t recognize.

Numbers.

Letters.

Pieces of words.

Almost as though another language had tried forcing its way through. Then everything stabilized.

Please remain near General Kaelith.

The screen vanished.

Rin stood perfectly still. His stomach tightened. The System... Was scared.

It had threatened him. Manipulated him. Mocked him. Calculated his chances of survival with almost mechanical indifference.

Now... It sounded uncertain. That frightened him more than any warning it had ever given.

"Rin."

He turned.

Kaelith stood at the opposite end of the hallway. His sword remained sheathed. But his hand rested lightly upon its hilt.

"Anything?"

Rin hesitated.

"...The System appeared."

Kaelith walked closer.

"What did it say?"

Rin almost laughed. Not because anything was funny. Because the answer sounded ridiculous.

"It told me to stay near you."

Kaelith’s expression didn’t change.

"And?"

"It said I’d survive longer."

A long silence followed. Finally Kaelith nodded once.

"Good."

Rin stared.

"...That’s it?"

"Yes."

"You aren’t even curious?"

"I am."

"...Then why aren’t you asking questions?"

Kaelith looked toward the empty corridor behind Rin.

"Because..."

His voice remained calm.

"...I intended to keep you near me anyway."

For a second... Neither of them spoke. Rin looked away first.

"...You know..."

"What?"

"You’re making it difficult to argue with you."

"I’ve noticed."

"...Was that a joke?"

"...Perhaps."

Rin couldn’t help smiling.

"It was definitely a joke."

Kaelith’s expression remained as unreadable as ever.

Yet... Just for an instant... The corner of his mouth moved. Barely. Enough that Rin wondered if he’d imagined it.

Then—

A scream echoed somewhere below them. Both men froze. The sound lasted only a heartbeat.

Then... Silence.

Kaelith’s hand instantly drew his sword. Steel flashed beneath the torchlight. He looked toward Rin.

"Stay behind me."

Without waiting for an answer...

He ran toward the sound.

Rin followed.

The corridor suddenly felt much...

Much longer than before.
