[Chapter 230. Fall of a Drake]
His momentum came to a halt above the dragon's thrashing head, the sudden arrest of motion making his muscles scream in protest. A momentary weightlessness seized him before gravity reasserted its brutal claim, and he began to plummet back to the ground, the wind tearing at his coat as he fell. The dragon's final roar of agony twisted into a gurgling, wet sound, like a drowning gasp mixed with the cracking of stone. Its massive body began to list to one side, its wings fluttering uselessly like broken sails, their movements becoming erratic as death claimed the ancient creature.
`Now the hard part. I have to not die.`
He thought as he fell, the words a desperate mantra in his mind while his enhanced senses tracked every microsecond of his descent. One of his remaining assault drones vanished in a flash of blue light, replaced by a travel drone that materialized beneath him. The disk hummed as it caught his falling body, the sudden jolt nearly dislocating his shoulders as momentum transferred to the machine. As his gaze wandered along the massive beast's long neck, he watched in horrified fascination as its head crashed onto the bridge, shattering the structure under the colossal weight and sending its chunks plummeting into the magma sea below.
Searanox was almost out of TP; his reserves had fallen into the double digits, a dangerous state. "They haven't been this low for a long time." He spoke, the words barely audible over the dragon's death throes and the crashing of stone. His voice was rough, raw from the sulfuric air and the strain of battle. He dismissed all his remaining drones with a mental command, their blue lights winking out one by one except for the travel drone he sat upon, the sole machine keeping him from joining the beast in the churning lava below.
Then, the dragon's wings twitched, a subtle movement that preceded violent action as the beast's survival instincts kicked in with devastating force. The massive leathery appendages beat down, creating another hurricane gale that scoured the platform with scorching wind. Almost its entire body lifted from the ground, muscles and sinew straining as it hauled its immense weight upward despite its grievous injury. With speed that defied its size, its massive claw shot out, gleaming like daggers in the caldera's light.
The impact struck right where Searanox was seated on his drone, the sound of crunching metal echoing through the caldera as the talons tore through both machine and man. His world became a blur of crimson scales and black stone. He flew through the air, his body becoming a projectile. He hit the caldera's wall with a heavy impact that shattered the stone, leaving a crater where he had struck the surface, spiderweb cracks radiating outward from the point of impact.
The next thing he saw through blurred vision was the dragon's body rising from the center platform within the caldera. His sight was limited by the cracked rock and lingering dust that surrounded him, creating a hazy, dreamlike quality to the scene. Its head lifted, graceful despite its injuries; its remaining eye glowed with golden light that seemed to burn with an inner fire. Then came a roar—unlike any before it, filled with the bloodlust of vengeance and something more ancient. Searanox felt that this wasn't an ordinary roar. His eyes widened as genuine fear gripped his heart, a cold terror that transcended everything he had ever experienced.
He was frozen in place, muscles locked by a terror that went beyond mere instinct.
Flames shot out from its maw, a torrent of superheated destruction bathing the entire space in their inferno. The air itself seemed to ignite, turning the caldera into a furnace of biblical proportions as the dragon's rage found expression in elemental fire. Searanox could feel the heat from these waves of flame that threatened to burn everything inside them to ash within seconds. As the dragon turned its massive head, spewing its flames in a display of unrestrained fury, dark blood ran down its crimson scales, dripping into the blistering magma below with sizzling sounds that rose even above the roar of the flames. The blood left dark trails across its body, marking the path of its mortal wound like an ugly scar across its once-impeccable armor.
`How are you not dead?`
The thought ran through him, a whisper of disoriented confusion that echoed in the silence of his mind. He wasn't certain if he was referring to the dragon or himself. He didn't feel the pain that should have been screaming through every nerve after getting launched into the rocky wall with enough force to shatter stone. His body should be mangled and broken, his bones splintered, his organs pulped against the unyielding surface.
And yet he was fine, if a bit disoriented. It felt not like he had broken through a solid wall of rock, but rather struck soft earth or sand after falling from a short height. The impact had been violent, jarring, but somehow lacking the finality that should have accompanied such a collision with an unyielding surface. His magitech armor showed no breaches, no damage beyond some surface scratches and dents that seemed superficial at best.
For a moment, he watched the dragon rampaging inside the caldera, turning everything that wasn't stone into ash. The beast's movements were erratic, driven by pain and fury rather than purpose. It smashed against the walls of the caldera with its tail, causing rockfalls that crashed into the magma below with deafening splashes. The dragon seemed in a frenzy of destruction, lashing out at anything and everything in its agony and rage. The remaining eye darted around the caldera, searching for its tormentor even as the creature's massive body swayed, its coordination compromised by the devastating injury Searanox had inflicted.
Moments later, the fear that had gripped his heart like an iron vice lifted from him as suddenly as it had seized him. It felt like waking from a nightmare, the terror fading into confusion, then clarity. His mind began to work in an instant as it had before, tactical assessments and contingency plans flashing through his consciousness. There was not even a trace of that impossible fear left, as if it had never existed.
Only the lingering traces of the fear he had felt since he first saw the dragon, the natural apprehension that came with facing such a formidable opponent, remained. His analytical mind noted with detached interest how the dragon's movements had become more predictable now that it was operating on pure instinct rather than intelligence.
The flames stopped, leaving a void of sound as unsettling as the inferno that had preceded it. The cessation was followed by a roar that shook the walls, a sound of pure rage that seemed to tear at the fabric of the caldera. As it turned its head from side to side, its remaining eye burned with golden light that seemed to contain all the fires of hell. It looked for the small insect that had wounded it, searching with an intensity that made the air shimmer with heat and menace. The dragon's head moved with desperation as it failed to locate its tormentor in the rubble and shadows of the caldera.
`I need more TP if I want to continue the fight.`
The realization struck him with cold clarity as he watched the dragon's frantic search from his position embedded in the caldera wall. His TP reserves hovered at a mere forty-three points—insufficient for what lay ahead.
With that thought, he reached out to the system interface that materialized in his mind, bringing forth four more bottles of the familiar blue liquid. Another sixty silver vanished from his storage ring, the cost of survival in this hellish arena was more than he would have been willing to pay under different circumstances..
He uncorked the second bottle with trembling fingers, the fumes sharp and metallic as he brought it to his lips. As he poured the liquid down his throat, the burning pain he had experienced earlier flared inside him with new intensity. His muscles spasmed as the energy coursed through him, each nerve ending screaming as if being seared with white-hot iron. He coughed, catching some of the liquid in his hand as his body convulsed from the pain.
In the dim light shining through the crack in the rock where he lay hidden, what he saw coating his fingers was not the blue liquid he had expected. It was red.
`Blood—`
Was all he could think as he instinctively covered his mouth to stifle the sound of coughing, the coppery taste filling his mouth. More blood ran down his arm as he caught it in his hand. One of the remaining bottles slipped from his grip, shattering on the stone below with a sharp crack, spilling its precious contents into the dust.
At the moment the glass broke, the dragon's remaining eye snapped toward the far wall of the caldera—its golden gaze locking onto his location.
