In a flash of blue light, a travel drone materialized before him, its metallic body humming with contained energy as it spun to life.

`Get me out of here,`

Searanox commanded through the mental link, the words a desperate plea in his mind as his body convulsed with another coughing fit. Blood sprayed across the drone's smooth surface, the crimson liquid stark against the metallic gray of the machine. The only reason he remained on the drone's surface rather than sliding into the void below was the magical force that bound him to his creation—an invisible force of energy that clung to him.

As his drone pulled him free from the wall and into the open air above the churning magma of the caldera, a torrent of flames crashed against the stone where he had been moments before, the impact turning rock to molten slag with a sound like a thousand smiths hammers striking in unison. The heat wave that followed was suffocating, even through the rings protection, making his vision swim as the air shimmered and warped around the inferno.

Blood continued to coat the drone's surface as Searanox struggled to breathe, each cough sending another spray of crimson across the machine beneath him. His lungs burned, not just from the heat but from the damage within, every breath a struggle that left him light-headed and disoriented. The dragon's head shot upward with impossible speed, its remaining eye burning with golden fury as it tracked his escape path across the caldera.

Before Searanox could fully process this development, the massive beast's muscles tensed, its enormous wings beating down with thunderous force as it, too, rose into the air, creating violent updrafts that sent embers and ash swirling through the chamber. While Searanox lay prone on his drone, struggling to remain conscious, his rifle materialized in his grip with a soft chime, the weapon appearing as if summoned by his sheer will to survive. Without hesitation, beams of violet energy shot from the barrel, striking the dragon's underbelly where the scales were thinner and less resistant to attack, initiating a desperate aerial combat in the vast expanse of the volcanic caldera, the two combatants silhouetted against the orange glow of the magma below.

The dragon rose with the fury of a vengeful god, its massive wings beating the superheated air into a tempest that scoured the caldera walls. Searanox's travel drone zipped through the chaos, its propulsion systems straining as it executed evasive maneuvers that defied the laws of physics. His rifle felt heavy in his blood-slick hands, each trigger pull sending another beam of violet energy hurtling toward the beast's exposed underbelly. Most shots struck true, sizzling against the softer scales with impacts that sounded like hammers striking an anvil, yet the dragon barely registered these wounds, its focus singular—kill the insect that dared wound it.

Flames erupted from the dragon's maw in a continuous stream, a river of fire that chased Searanox across the caldera. His drone dipped and swerved, the heat of the inferno singeing his coat and making the air crackle with contained violence. He could feel his strength failing, his blood loss making his vision blur at the edges, turning the dragon into a nightmarish silhouette against the glowing magma below.

`Not like this...`

The thought was fragmented, barely coherent through the haze of pain and exhaustion that clouded his mind.

The dragon's talons reached out, missing his drone by mere centimeters as it banked hard to the left. The proximity was terrifying—he could see every detail of those deadly claws, the way they curved like scimitars, each one capable of tearing through his armor as if it were paper. His rifle spat another beam of energy, this one striking the dragon's wing joint where the membrane connected to the massive body. The impact tore through the wing, creating a hole the size of a man's head.

A roar of fury echoed through the caldera, the sound so powerful it seemed to liquefy the air around them. The dragon abandoned every defensive instinct, focusing solely on catching the tiny insect.

Minutes blurred into an agonizing eternity as Searanox's body screamed in protest, every movement a symphony of pain. His ribs felt like broken glass grinding against each other with every shallow breath, and the coppery taste of blood filled his mouth, coating his teeth and tongue. Through the crimson haze of his own vital fluid, his lips, bitten raw in concentration, appeared shockingly red against his pale, blood-slicked face.

The air thickened with the stench of scorched flesh and sulfur, making each inhale a battle against suffocation. Then, as the dragon banked sharply, exposing the vulnerable juncture of its wing joint once more, Searanox's eyes widened with predatory focus.

"Got you now,"

The words emerged as a raw, guttural whisper, barely audible over the dragon's roars and the rush of wind past his ears. It wasn't a taunt but a grim promise etched in blood and determination, the culmination of every ounce of his dwindling strength and tactical cunning.

At the base of the crumbling platform inside the caldera, six of his offensive drones waited patiently on his command, their sleek forms positioned in a formation that spoke of calculated precision.

They released their beams simultaneously, not in a scattered barrage but as six focused streams of violet energy that converged on a single point. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. The sound that followed wasn't the clean snap of bone but rather a sickening tear of muscle, sinew, and leathery membrane amplified to deafening proportions by the caldera's acoustics.

The dragon's wing, already compromised by Searanox's earlier shots, didn't just fail—it disintegrated at the joint, vaporized by the concentrated energy assault that left behind only smoke and the smell of burnt flesh. The dragon's momentum betrayed it as gravity, long defied by the beast's powerful wings, seized its chance. The massive creature twisted mid-air, its remaining wing beating frantically but uselessly against the inevitable.

It fell fast, not with dignity but with the graceless tumble of a broken toy, its enormous bulk silhouetted against the orange glow of the magma below. The splash that followed was cataclysmic, sending waves of molten rock cascading across the caldera floor, some reaching high enough to scorch the walls near where Searanox hovered. The dragon roared as it began to sink, not a sound of pain but of disbelief and fury that ended abruptly as its head went under, the infernal sound swallowed by the churning lava with a final, gurgling hiss that left an eerie silence in its wake.

Minutes passed while Searanox kept hovering, his travel drone moving positions constantly in a jittery dance of paranoia. He watched the lava bubble and churn where the dragon had disappeared, half-expecting the beast to emerge again.

His blood loss made his vision swim, the caldera's walls appearing to pulse and shift like living things in the dim light. The silence that followed the dragon's disappearance felt more terrifying than its roars had been—a void where the air itself seemed to hold its breath, waiting. Then, a system window opened in his vision.

Searanox let out a ragged sigh of relief as the system window materialized before his eyes, the blue text seeming to glow brighter against the red-orange backdrop of the caldera. The notification barely registered through the haze of pain and blood loss that clouded his vision. His travel drone descended, the machine's movements reflecting his own exhaustion, before settling with a soft metallic thud on the warped remains of the central platform, the stone still radiating intense heat that made the air shimmer above it.

On the destroyed and warped platform stood a dark wooden chest with intricate golden inlays that caught the ambient light of the magma, creating a pattern of shifting highlights against the dark wood, its appearance incongruous amidst the devastation.

While he forced his trembling hands to open the ornate chest, a silver drone materialized beside him, its metallic body pulsing with a soft green healing light that brought a glimmer of hope. But only for a moment—as his fingers brushed against the chest's latch, the drone's therapeutic glow abruptly ceased. He could still feel the searing pain, as if shards of glass were grinding within his chest with every shallow breath, but the drone remained inert, refusing to continue its healing function.

It brought back a vivid memory, one of lying in a dark earthen tunnel long ago. His leg had just been pierced by a stinger, and necrotic black veins had spread rapidly from the wound like poisoned roots. Back then, his drone had treated the surface puncture wound, but it had refused to address the creeping necrosis that threatened to consume his limb.

"A limitation to physical injury, perhaps. But why isn't it healing the internal bleeding as it used to do?"

he muttered to himself through blood-slicked lips, his voice a raw whisper that barely carried over the distant rumble of magma. As he stored the familiar pouch that held forty-seven silver coins—a meager return on his massive investment—he couldn't help but feel bitter disappointment. Next to the coins lay a set of earrings, each featuring a small ruby teardrop encased in a delicate silver mesh suspended on a hook.
