"Well fuck..." The words were swallowed by the resonant roar of the beast before him, the dragon's roar echoing through the vast caldera and shaking the structure of the bridge beneath his feet. The sound was a physical force, making his teeth ache and his vision swim with each passing second of the onslaught.

The dragon's maw opened wide, revealing teeth the length of swords. Searanox saw the glow deep in its throat—a pulsating, orange-red light that grew brighter with every thunderous beat of the creature's heart. His defensive drones shot forward in the blink of an eye, their metallic bodies blurring as they positioned themselves between him and certain death, pushing their hexagonal barriers directly in front of its maw.

`Thirty seconds is way too long right now.`

Searanox thought, the words a frantic whisper in his mind as he gave a mental command to his two drones. They were tasked with buying him as much time as they could, their existence measured in precious seconds against the onslaught of elemental fury.

Flames pushed against his drones layered barrier, a torrent of superheated death that licked around the hexagons, creating a wall of fire that blocked his vision. The heat felt intense even through his magitech suit.

"Assault drones, fly around and blast away. Draw its attention to you," he commanded, his voice strained against the roar of the flames while uncorking a potion bottle filled with an orange liquid that smelled of citrus and metal.

The moment the mixture entered his body, his exhaustion fell away—as if he had taken a long, deep sleep rather than fighting for his life. Energy surged through his veins, pushing back the weariness that had settled into his muscles after hours navigating the treacherous dungeon.

Seconds later, his first barrier broke with a sound like shattering glass, then the next. As the dragon closed its maw, dark smoke billowed from it with the smell of sulfur and burnt stone. Both defensive drones remained intact; one recovered its barrier while the other had one layer nearly broken and another fully intact.

As the dragon's golden eyes fixed upon him through the lingering smoke—eyes that held an ancient intelligence and a cold, calculating anger—his combat drones fired their beam cannons into its flanks, tearing holes in the membrane of its massive wings. The creature roared in pain, a sound that shook the foundations of the caldera, but its injuries only enraged it further as it turned its attention to the pests that dared wound it.

Without tearing its eyes off Searanox, it unfurled its wings, each membrane stretching the width of a small building, and beat them down. The resulting gale hit like a hurricane, a physical force that sent rocks and debris tumbling across the bridge and nearly tore Searanox from his feet. He brought the dagger from his storage ring and slammed it into the black stone beneath him as he began to slide back, the metal scraping against volcanic rock with a piercing shriek.

He clung to the knife, his knuckles white with strain as the wind howled past him, hot and sulfurous, tearing at his coat. A second later, the wind passed, and the next thing he saw was its massive tail sweeping over the platform toward his location, thick as a tree trunk and covered in the same tough scales as the rest of its body. In a heartbeat, his defensive drone turned and projected its shield toward the incoming tail. The resulting impact struck like thunder in the open caldera, a deafening boom that made his ears ring. The sound of shattering glass followed as the barrier fractured under the immense force.

His drone held the incoming tail off, just barely. His protective barrier flickered, its hexagonal pattern blinking like a dying ember as cracks spiderwebbed across its surface.

Then the maw pushed forward; its massive fangs snapped shut, crushing one of his drones between them while the other vanished in its throat, swallowed whole by the beast's inferno. The dragon lifted its head, rising to its full height, and looked down on the tiny figure, its shadow stretching across the entire platform.

`Is it smirking at me?`

Searanox thought as he saw the scales around its face shifting into a grin, a cruel twist of reptilian features that mocked his feeble resistance. The creature's golden eyes glowed with an intelligence that belied its bestial appearance, ancient and calculating, as if savoring his struggle before delivering the final blow.

Searanox waited a second, ready to react to anything the beast did next. Multiple scenarios fired in his accelerated mind, tactical calculations and contingency plans flashing through his consciousness at machine-like speed. Then another second passed. The dragon still looked down on him, its eyes narrowed as it waited for something, savoring this moment of dominance.

But nothing happened. The enormous predator simply watched him, almost curious to see what the tiny creature would attempt next. He couldn't make sense of it.

`What the fuck is it waiting for...`

The tension felt palpable, the air thick with unspoken challenge and the overwhelming presence of the beast. Every instinct screamed at him to act, to flee or fight, yet something held him in place, the dragon's gaze a physical weight pinning him to the spot.

Searanox constructed two new defensive drones. Eighty-eight Tech Points vanished from his pool in an instant, along with twelve silver inside his storage ring—a significant but necessary drain. The drones materialized beside him in a flash of blue light, their hexagonal shields forming as they took defensive positions.

The moment his drones appeared, briefly illuminating the cavern's dimness, the dragon's claw moved in for a strike—a limb as large as a carriage, each talon longer than Searanox was tall. Their barriers formed in the nick of time, the hexagonal patterns shimmering into existence a fraction of a second before the razor-sharp talons slammed down. As the shields intercepted the devastating swipe from tearing him apart, Searanox felt the immense pressure transmitted through his psychic link with the drones, their frames groaning under the impossible weight.

`It's toying with me.`

The realization struck him like a physical blow as he observed the deliberate, casual nature of the dragon's movements. There was a calculated cruelty in the way it prolonged the confrontation, a sadistic intelligence behind those ancient golden eyes that seemed to enjoy his desperate struggle. The beast wasn't fighting for survival; it was playing with its food.

He noticed when his ability's cooldown hit zero—the moment his overcharge became available again. In the next instant, the six offensive drones orbiting his rifle flared with violet light, their energy signatures intensifying as they drew power from his TP reserves. At the same time, the dragon's claw pushed down on the flashing barrier, forcing his drone toward the ground along its projected shield. The screech of metal against rock filled the air as the drone's hull scraped the ground, sparks flying with every millimeter it was forced downward.

The dragon's golden eyes snapped from the drone beneath its claw toward the sudden flash of violet light, its massive head turning with impossible speed for something of its size. A deep, vibrating rumble filled the chamber before another deafening roar made his ears bleed and his vision blur. The sound waves were so powerful they seemed to liquefy the air around him, making his armor vibrate.

A second later, his drones released their gathered energy, forming a bright destructive beam that shot toward the dragon's chest—a spear of pure violet energy that illuminated the entire caldera. Searanox squeezed his eyes shut, the light burning through his eyelids, before taking a decisive step aside. His rifle dissolved back into his storage ring in a shimmer of blue light as he pushed off the rocks with all his might, his enhanced muscles screaming with effort.

The ground beneath his boots cracked and splintered as he launched toward the dragon, the obsidian bridge groaning under the force. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and burning rock, his lungs struggling to process the superheated atmosphere as he moved. The violent light of his shot vanished in a fraction of a second. The smell of burned flesh filled the air—a sickening combination of scorched scales and something deeper, more organic that made his stomach turn.

As he opened his eyes, he was shockingly close to the massive dragon, the creature's sheer scale overwhelming his senses even as adrenaline coursed through his veins. He pushed off the stone once again and leaped into the air, his body arcing through the sulfurous atmosphere.

As his momentum slowed in mid-air, Searanox drove the Mycelial Fang into the dragon's scales—a desperate gamble that paid off when the dagger found purchase between two overlapping plates of armor. The blade sank in with a sickening crunch. He placed his foot onto the hilt, using it as a foothold to push himself further up the dragon's neck.

The roar of anger that had shaken the foundations of the caldera abruptly twisted into one of pure agony, a sound simultaneously deeper and more guttural than before, as if the dragon's throat had been torn from within. The massive creature hadn't noticed the small dagger piercing its scales—not at first. The initial pain was a mere pinprick to a beast of such immense proportions.

Neither did it notice the small figure pushing upward with all its might, nearly breaking the sharp object buried in its flesh. Searanox's boots slipped on the slick, scaly surface, his muscles straining to their absolute limit as he ascended the creature's neck. Each movement was a calculated risk, a dance with death on the living mountain of flesh and scale beneath him.

Searanox appeared right next to the dragon's eye; it was more than twice as large as he was tall. The dark slit narrowed as it focused on him, the golden iris contracting to a pinpoint of lethal attention. The air around the eye shimmered with heat, making it difficult to breathe. He could see his own distorted reflection in the dark, liquid surface of the dragon's eye—a tiny, determined figure suspended in a sea of molten gold.

With a smirk on his lips—a grim, determined expression bordering on madness—Searanox pulled his rifle back out from his storage ring, the barrel glowing with pent-up energy. The weapon materialized in his hands with a soft chime, its violet circuits pulsing in sync with his racing heart. The smell of ozone grew stronger, a sharp, electric tang cutting through the sulfur and burned rock of the caldera.

"Surprise," he whispered, the word barely audible over the dragon's pained roars and the rumbling of the magma churning below. His voice sounded raw, strained from the heat and exertion, but held a note of cold satisfaction that sent shivers down his own spine.

The moment the word left his lips, the violet light tore from his rifle straight into the dragon's open iris. The beam shone impossibly bright, a spear of pure violet energy that illuminated the entire caldera in a flash, turning the dragon's scales a brilliant shade of purple for a split second. The air crackled with released energy, sounding like a dozen thunderbolts striking at once, as the beam bored deep into the creature's eye, vaporizing tissue.
