Chapter 1478: Soldiers
Chapter 1478: Soldiers
A moment ago.
The soldiers were gathering at the top of the wall. They were scared because the captain ordered them to standby on the wall.
One soldier came to the captain, asking, "Sir... Are we really going to fight the demons here?"
The captain nodded. "Get everyone ready. We will stop them here."
"But sir... Do we have enough people? If I’m not mistaken, there should be two cities between us and the demons... Don’t tell me. They have fallen?"
The captain closed his eyes for a moment before patting the soldier’s shoulder. "Are you so worried about your life? Do you think Marquis Ardagan would let our people die just like that? There must be a reason why the marquis wants us to stop them here.
"That’s why as soldiers, we have to follow his orders." The captain’s face remained solemn. It couldn’t be helped if they were scared of death, but unlike other territories, the people in the Ardagan family’s territory had experienced heavens.
They could use and even afford things they weren’t supposed to have. It might be due to all that convenience that they had forgotten that this world was dangerous.
The captain was aware of this and remained calm. The reputation of their marquis was high. He also received a message from headquarters, asking him directly to hold the demons for as long as possible.
Still, the scared soldiers were not as many as he expected. Most of them were just newbies.
Normally, half of the soldiers would experience this fear, but in this city, only 20% of them were scared. The others showed their confidence, knowing that they were the warriors of the Ardagan family.
If the demons came, they would kill the demons. If the marquis asked them to kill the demons, they would simply ask, "How many?"
And the captain was the same as they were. He stood at the edge of the wall, staring at the horizon. Although he was only a spirit wielder, he understood the weight of his responsibility.
However, the moment the demons began to gather, the captain couldn’t help but feel chills down his spine.
The black dots on the horizon expanded, revealing the true size of the demon army.
"This is..."
"How many demons are there?"
"Are we supposed to stop this?"
Even the confident soldiers earlier couldn’t contain their doubt. The demon army stretched over two hundred meters on each side. Their ranks were so long that it looked like the demons had been engulfed by their existence.
Numerous big demons revealed their fearful appearance, as if telling the humans that death was the only outcome of their fight.
"How are we meant to stop this?"
Some people fell into despair. There were only 900 soldiers in this city. It was by no means enough to stop the army of tens of thousands of demons. Even the knight captain was only a spirit wielder, which wasn’t enough to stop the leader of the demons.
The battle was already over before it began.
Amidst their despair, the knight captain gritted his teeth and shouted, "What are you doing? Stand up! Are you truly the warriors of the Ardagan family? Can you imagine what will happen if we let these demons pass through this place?
"Can you imagine how these demons trample our family, annihilate our kin, and destroy our paradise?
"Stand up if you are truly the warriors of the Ardagan family."
Despite the rally cry of the knight captain, only 30% of them stood back up with resolute faces as though they were ready to die. The others felt hopeless, thinking that even if they tried, nothing would change.
"Stand up, you weaklings. Our lord once stood up against all odds. The people who supported him were hailed as heroes. I might not be a hero, but I don’t wish to become a coward!" A senior soldier helped other people.
He wasn’t the only one. Other senior soldiers brought them up. They had witnessed the battle personally. Despite the disadvantage, Noel managed to win against the demons.
Even though they wouldn’t be able to do it, they should at least try, withstanding the demon onslaught for as long as possible for their lord.
Unfortunately, only a total of half the original number chose to fight. The knight captain was disappointed, but there was nothing he could do.
More importantly, the sight was too scary even for him. The demons were approaching, their roars filled the atmosphere, and their killing intent soared.
"Haaaa!" The knight captain roared, unleashing his energy.
Some demons actually stopped and charged their own demonic energy as though they were ready to launch their attacks from far away to destroy the walls.
With so many huge beasts preparing their attacks, the knight captain gritted his teeth, wondering how many attacks he could withstand.
"Activate the Spiritual Barrier Rune!" The captain shouted.
The runes hidden inside the wall were activated as the people poured in the demon crystals.
"Get ready!" The captain raised his sword.
Little did he know, the reason the demons stopped was not because they wanted to destroy the wall. Instead, they felt an enormous threat coming from far away.
And this time, the threat had hovered above the city, casting shadows underneath.
"!!!" The knight captain widened his eyes and raised his head. "Wha—?!"
There were six airships above the city. The five airships in front drifted to the right, as weapons pointed out of the gaps below the deck. Runes appeared one after another.
The captain was speechless. It looked like he was too scared to even realize reinforcement had arrived.
But what was more surprising was the last airship. Noel climbed onto the deck with a solemn face as he waved his hand, giving his command. "Fire!"
Upon his order, the airships unleashed their runes at the same time.
The Meteor Runes flew forward together with the Rain of Light Runes. The Meteor Runes fell like cannonballs, while the Rain of Light runes showered them like thousands of arrows.
The demons also launched their own attacks, but the Meteor Runes overpowered them and landed on the ground.
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
Explosions engulfed numerous demons as the light arrows pierced a similar number of demons. In just a single wave of attack, over three thousand demons died on the spot.
