Sword God
175 - The Route Beyond the Ice
The journey back to the Frozen Sword Citadel was considerably different from the expedition's first approach to Frostfall Basin. The violent mana storm had disappeared, the snow no longer moved against the wind, and the strange currents that had previously pulled water and ice toward the damaged junction had returned to their natural patterns. Even the migrating monsters had begun settling into new territories. Herds that had fled the basin were now spreading across the valleys again, while several predators cautiously returned to the regions they had abandoned.
Ara monitored the network continuously as the expedition traveled.
“The junction is holding at fifty-two percent,” she reported. “It's not fully repaired, but the connection is stable enough to remain functional.”
Subin nodded.
That was the important part.
They had not restored Frostfall Basin to its original condition, but they had prevented its collapse and reconnected it to the Citadel. More importantly, they had proven that the World Dungeon's regional network could be repaired without destroying the ecosystems around it.
Director Kang's voice came through the communication device.
“The Arctic gate is now at seventy-eight percent stability.”
Rafael raised an eyebrow.
“That quickly?”
Ara checked the readings.
“The improvement is consistent with the internal synchronization increase.”
Kang continued. “The Association has already moved the external perimeter farther from the gate. No civilian entry is being permitted yet.”
“Keep it that way,” Subin replied. “We still don't know what happens if the connection reaches full stability.”
There was a short pause.
“Understood. But Subin, there's something else.”
“What?”
“The international teams have noticed that the other external gate signatures are changing.”
Ara immediately looked toward him.
“How?”
Kang explained that the other known gate locations had begun showing intermittent mana activity. None had fully formed yet, but the signatures were becoming stronger.
“The network repair appears to be affecting more than the Arctic gate,” he said.
Subin considered that carefully.
It made sense.
The dungeon was interconnected.
Repairing one junction had increased synchronization, and the system was beginning to communicate more efficiently across the active regions.
The question was whether that would help or create another problem.
“Continue monitoring them,” Subin said. “If another gate begins forming, don't send anyone through until we understand its destination.”
Kang agreed and ended the communication.
The expedition continued toward the Citadel.
By the time they reached the outer valley, the fortress was already visible beyond the mountains. Its crystal towers were brighter than before, and several previously inactive structures had begun emitting blue light. The restored connection from Frostfall Basin had clearly reached the Citadel.
Ara slowed as she examined the readings.
“The Citadel is activating additional systems.”
Jae-hyun looked toward the fortress.
“Because we repaired the junction?”
“Probably.”
Subin watched the towers.
The World Dungeon wasn't simply a collection of abandoned environments.
Some of its systems were still functioning.
They had simply been operating below their intended capacity.
The expedition entered the Citadel through the eastern gate.
The three Citadel Guardians that had previously watched their arrival were waiting near the central plaza. None raised their weapons. Instead, they stood aside as the expedition passed.
The Regional Junction Core was brighter than before.
Ara immediately connected her equipment.
The map appeared.
[Regional Network Synchronization: 27%.]
The Frozen Region was now fully visible.
Several routes that had previously been hidden appeared on the display.
One extended toward the Volcanic Region.
Another toward the Floating Region.
A third led deeper into the Frozen Frontier.
The fourth returned toward the Ruined City.
Yerin studied the map.
“So the repair didn't just stabilize the Citadel.”
Ara nodded.
“It restored access to information.”
Subin looked at the newly revealed routes.
“Show us the Floating Region connection.”
Ara selected it.
A large portion of the map expanded.
The route began at the Citadel, passed through several mountain junctions, crossed an enormous empty area, and finally reached a circular structure suspended above what appeared to be an enormous vertical shaft.
The system identified it.
[Inter-Regional Junction Detected.]
[Destination: Floating Region.]
[Connection Status: Damaged.]
[Estimated Stability: 31%.]
Ara frowned.
“That is considerably worse than Frostfall Basin.”
Rafael folded his arms.
“So our next destination is obvious.”
“Not quite,” Ara said.
She switched to another display.
A warning appeared.
[Route Access Restricted.]
[Environmental Transition Unstable.]
[Recommended Regional Synchronization: 35% or Higher.]
Jae-hyun looked at Subin.
“We're at twenty-seven.”
“Yes.”
“So we can't safely use the route yet.”
Subin studied the map.
The World Dungeon itself was preventing them from entering the next region through the damaged route.
That meant they had two choices.
They could attempt to force the connection open, or they could continue repairing the Frozen Region until the network reached the required stability.
Subin didn't hesitate.
“We repair the remaining Frozen Region junctions first.”
Ara nodded.
“That will likely increase synchronization enough to stabilize the Floating Region route.”
Yerin looked at the map.
“How many damaged junctions are left?”
Ara zoomed out.
“Three major ones.”
The first was deep within the Frozen Frontier.
The second was connected to the Volcanic Region.
The third was near the boundary of the Floating Region.
Jae-hyun sighed.
“So three more before we can even reach the next environment.”
Subin shook his head.
“Not necessarily.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The system says the route requires thirty-five percent synchronization. We need eight more percent.”
Ara understood.
“We don't necessarily have to repair all three.”
“Correct.”
She checked the network.
“Frostfall Basin increased synchronization from eighteen to twenty-seven. If another junction is comparable, repairing one could be enough.”
Subin nodded.
“That should be our next objective.”
Ara highlighted the nearest damaged junction.
A location appeared far north of the Citadel.
[Northern Ice Junction.]
[Current Stability: 46%.]
[Distance: 96 km.]
[Environmental Condition: Stable.]
This was much closer than Frostfall Basin.
But there was another warning.
[Regional Guardian Territory Detected.]
Jae-hyun smiled.
“Of course.”
Yerin looked at Subin.
“Every junction has something guarding it?”
“Not necessarily,” Ara said. “But the dungeon seems to place powerful creatures near important environmental structures.”
Subin looked at the map.
The northern junction appeared relatively stable.
If they repaired it without causing another environmental collapse, they could potentially raise synchronization above thirty-five percent and gain access to the Floating Region.
It was the most efficient route.
But there was one more reason to investigate it.
Ara enlarged the map.
A faint line extended beyond the Northern Ice Junction.
It didn't lead toward the Floating Region.
It led north.
Far beyond the known boundaries of the Frozen Frontier.
“What is that?” Yerin asked.
Ara shook her head.
“The Citadel's map doesn't classify it.”
“Unknown region?”
“Not exactly. It's outside the current mapped network.”
Subin looked at the line.
The system had previously shown twelve connected regions.
This route appeared to lead beyond those twelve.
But the information was incomplete.
Rather than speculate, Subin returned his attention to the immediate mission.
“We deal with the Northern Ice Junction first.”
The expedition began preparing again.
Before leaving, Ara transmitted the new map data to Director Kang.
The response came quickly.
“Twenty-seven percent synchronization,” Kang said. “That's a significant improvement.”
“It may increase further after the next junction.”
Kang was silent for a moment.
“Then we may be able to establish controlled access to the Arctic gate soon.”
Subin looked toward the crystal map.
“Don't assume that yet.”
“Why?”
“Because we still don't know what happens at full synchronization.”
Kang understood.
“Understood. We'll continue monitoring.”
The communication ended.
The expedition left the Citadel once again.
This time, they traveled north.
The route passed through a region of smaller mountains and wide frozen plains. Unlike Frostfall Basin, the environment appeared stable. There were no large mana storms or migrating herds. Several creatures watched the expedition from a distance but did not approach.
The peaceful environment made everyone slightly more cautious.
They had learned that stability in the World Dungeon did not necessarily mean safety.
After several hours, they reached a frozen forest.
The trees were enormous, their trunks covered in blue-white bark and their branches extending high above the expedition. Unlike the forest region they had explored earlier, this vegetation was adapted to extreme cold. Small crystalline fruits grew from the branches, glowing faintly beneath the snow.
Ara stopped to examine one.
“The environmental mana concentration is extremely high.”
Yerin looked around.
“Could these be resources?”
“Probably, but we shouldn't harvest anything until we understand the ecosystem.”
Subin nodded.
The expedition continued without disturbing the forest.
Eventually, they found a trail.
Large footprints crossed the snow.
Jae-hyun crouched beside them.
“That's not a small creature.”
Ara scanned the prints.
“Estimated body weight exceeds several tons.”
Subin looked ahead.
The footprints continued toward the mountains.
The Northern Ice Junction was beyond those mountains.
They continued.
Near sunset, the forest ended.
A massive frozen plateau stretched before them.
At its center stood a crystalline tower.
Unlike the Frostfall junction, this one remained upright and undamaged.
Yet the system displayed a warning.
[Northern Ice Junction Detected.]
[Stability: 46%.]
[Network Output: 39%.]
[Regional Synchronization: 27%.]
Subin looked at the structure.
“If the junction is intact, why is the stability so low?”
Ara began scanning.
“Something is interfering with it.”
A deep vibration traveled through the plateau.
Snow slid from the surrounding cliffs.
The enormous footprints they had discovered earlier appeared again.
This time they continued directly toward the junction.
The ground shook.
A massive creature emerged from behind the mountain.
It was covered in thick white armor, with six legs supporting an enormous body. A pair of curved horns extended from its head, and crystalline structures covered its back like a natural fortress.
The system identified it.
[Northern Ice Colossus — Level 219 — A+]
The creature did not attack immediately.
Instead, it walked toward the junction.
Every step caused the surrounding crystals to glow.
Ara stared at her readings.
“That's the interference.”
The Colossus wasn't damaging the junction.
Its body was absorbing part of the network's output.
Jae-hyun looked at Subin.
“So we have another creature connected to a junction.”
Subin shook his head.
“Not like the Frostfall Devourer.”
He studied the creature.
The Colossus wasn't connected physically.
It was simply drawing environmental mana from the area.
Ara confirmed it.
“It appears to be feeding from the junction's excess output.”
Subin understood.
That changed the problem completely.
The creature wasn't causing the instability.
It had adapted to it.
The junction was producing more mana than the surrounding ecosystem could normally absorb, and the Colossus had become the natural sink for that excess energy.
If they drove it away, the excess mana might accumulate around the junction and cause another failure.
Yerin looked toward the creature.
“So we can't just fight it.”
Subin nodded.
“Not unless it attacks first.”
The Colossus lowered its head and looked toward the expedition.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the creature turned away and continued walking around the junction.
The crystals beneath its feet glowed with each step.
Ara watched the readings.
“It's stabilizing the output.”
The expedition had discovered another kind of regional adaptation.
This time, the creature wasn't damaging the network.
It was helping regulate it.
Subin looked at the Northern Ice Junction.
The problem was no longer simply repairing damaged structures.
They needed to understand how the dungeon's ecosystems had adapted around those structures.
And if they wanted to reach the Floating Region safely, they would have to work with those ecosystems rather than simply cutting through them.
Subin lowered his sword.
“Let's observe first.”
The expedition settled into positions around the plateau while Ara began recording the interaction between the Colossus and the junction.
Above them, the frozen sky darkened.
Far beyond the mountains, another region of the World Dungeon waited.
The route to the Floating Region was still unstable.
But the expedition was beginning to understand the real purpose of the regional network.
It wasn't simply a system that connected places.
It was an ecosystem that had learned to keep itself alive.
