Sword God
176 - The Northern Ice Colossus
The expedition spent the first several hours observing the Northern Ice Colossus rather than approaching it. From the edge of the plateau, Subin could see the enormous creature moving slowly between the frozen ridges, its six legs sinking only slightly into the snow despite its tremendous weight. Crystalline plates covered portions of its back and shoulders, but unlike the aggressive creatures they had encountered deeper in the dungeon, the Colossus showed no interest in the humans gathered nearby. Every few minutes, it would stop beside one of the enormous crystalline formations scattered across the plateau, lower its head, and remain still for several breaths before continuing its slow circuit.
Ara had established several observation points around the plateau while Yerin and the others maintained a loose perimeter. Nobody had attacked the creature, and the creature had given them no reason to attack it.
"This isn't normal monster behavior," Jae-hyun said quietly as he watched the Colossus through the scope attached to his equipment. "It's behaving as if this entire place belongs to it."
"Not belongs to it," Ara corrected from beside him. She lowered her tablet and looked toward the creature. "It's behaving as if it's responsible for something."
Jae-hyun glanced at her. "You found something?"
"Maybe."
Ara pointed toward the far side of the plateau. Beneath a thin layer of snow were several narrow crystalline channels extending outward from the central junction. They were difficult to notice because most of them were buried beneath ice, but whenever the Colossus approached one, the crystals beneath the ground briefly illuminated.
"The creature doesn't absorb energy randomly," Ara explained. "It moves between those points according to the amount of energy passing through them. When the output increases, it goes there. When the output falls, it moves somewhere else."
Rafael folded his arms. "So it's regulating the area."
"That's my current conclusion."
Subin remained silent as he watched the Colossus.
The creature stopped.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the crystalline plates along its back began glowing.
A low vibration passed through the ground.
Subin immediately felt it through Simple Edge.
He did not draw the sword.
Instead, he closed his eyes and concentrated on the sensation.
It wasn't hostile Sword Intent. It wasn't even a deliberate attack. The vibration was closer to pressure moving through a large body of water. Something deep beneath the plateau was shifting, and the Colossus was responding to it.
"Everyone, stay where you are," Subin said.
The others immediately became alert.
The snow several hundred meters ahead of them collapsed inward.
A crack spread across the plateau, not violently but steadily, forming a long black line beneath the snow. The Colossus turned toward it and released a deep roar that shook loose snow from the surrounding cliffs.
The creature moved.
Despite its enormous size, it crossed the distance surprisingly quickly. One of its forelegs struck the ground beside the crack, and a wave of condensed mana spread through the ice.
The crack stopped widening.
Ara stared at the scene.
"It's not attacking."
"No," Subin said. "It's preventing something from breaking through."
The ground trembled again.
This time, the crack widened.
Something enormous moved underneath them.
Yerin immediately summoned her spear. "That's bigger than the Colossus."
The Colossus lowered its body.
Its crystalline armor brightened.
Then the plateau exploded.
A mass of black ice erupted from beneath the ground, throwing chunks of frozen earth into the air. The Colossus struck it with both front legs, stopping the emerging creature before it could completely break through.
The impact produced a thunderous shockwave.
Subin finally drew Simple Edge.
The creature beneath the plateau was unlike anything they had encountered in the Frozen Region. Its body was long and heavily armored, with six enormous limbs and a head covered by overlapping plates of dark blue ice. Two pale eyes opened beneath its armor.
Frostburrow Wyrm — Level 218 — A+
The Wyrm twisted violently.
The Colossus was thrown backward.
Yerin and Jae-hyun immediately moved forward, but Subin raised one hand.
"Wait."
The Wyrm wasn't looking at them.
It was looking at the Colossus.
The Colossus charged again.
Their collision sent another wave through the plateau.
"This is a territorial battle?" Rafael asked.
Subin shook his head.
"Look at the ground."
The others followed his gaze.
Every time the Wyrm moved, the buried crystalline channels beneath the plateau flashed. The creature wasn't simply fighting the Colossus. Its movements were disturbing the structures beneath them.
Ara's expression changed.
"The Wyrm is digging through the junction."
"Intentionally?"
"I don't know."
Subin watched the creature for another moment.
The Wyrm struck the ground with its front limbs, creating another fracture. The Colossus immediately moved to block it.
There was a pattern.
The Wyrm was trying to move deeper.
The Colossus was preventing it.
Neither creature had shown any interest in the expedition.
"This isn't our fight," Subin said.
Jae-hyun looked at him. "If they keep fighting, the entire plateau could collapse."
"I know."
Subin stepped forward.
Yerin caught his arm before he could move farther.
"You're going between them?"
"I don't want to kill either one."
Yerin released him after a brief pause. "Then don't."
Subin walked toward the two creatures.
The Colossus noticed him first.
Its head turned.
The Frostburrow Wyrm followed.
For a moment, three completely different forms of intent occupied the same space.
Subin lowered his sword.
He allowed his own Sword Intent to spread only a short distance around him, keeping it controlled and narrow rather than allowing it to dominate the surroundings.
The Wyrm's head tilted.
The Colossus remained still.
Subin could feel the difference between them.
The Colossus maintained.
The Wyrm penetrated.
One resisted change while the other constantly forced its way through whatever stood before it.
They were opposites.
Yet both belonged to the same environment.
Subin suddenly understood why the Colossus had been moving around the plateau.
It wasn't merely absorbing excess output.
It was maintaining the balance between different forces within the region.
If the Wyrm broke through too deeply, the buried channels could collapse. If the Colossus suppressed it completely, the pressure beneath the plateau would continue building until something else broke.
Neither creature could solve the problem alone.
Subin raised Simple Edge.
Yerin immediately understood what he intended.
"You're going to redirect it."
"Yes."
Subin approached the Wyrm's side rather than its head. The creature reacted immediately, swinging one enormous limb toward him.
He stepped aside.
The limb struck the ice where he had stood.
Subin's sword moved.
He didn't cut the creature.
Instead, the blade passed through the thin layer of ice beside its limb and created a shallow line across the ground.
A second line followed.
Then a third.
The cuts formed a path leading away from the central junction toward an empty valley.
The Wyrm stopped.
Subin stepped backward.
"Go."
The creature stared at him.
It seemed almost impossible that such a simple action could influence an A+ monster, but Subin wasn't trying to command it. He was creating the path that its own movement naturally wanted to follow.
The Wyrm turned toward the valley.
The Colossus watched.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then the Wyrm lowered its body and began crawling along the path Subin had created.
The Colossus followed.
The expedition watched in silence as the two enormous creatures moved away from the central plateau.
Ara immediately rushed toward the crystalline channels.
"Subin!"
He turned.
"The pressure is dropping."
She examined the readings again, then looked toward the valley.
"The Wyrm was actually trapped beneath the junction. It was trying to escape, but every time it dug upward, it destabilized the area. The Colossus kept pushing it back down because that was the only way it knew to contain the damage."
Subin sheathed Simple Edge.
"So neither was the cause."
"No. They were both responding to the same problem."
Rafael looked toward the distant creatures. "And you solved it by giving the Wyrm somewhere else to go."
"Temporarily."
Ara smiled slightly. "That's still more useful than killing it."
The team returned to the central plateau.
Without the struggle between the two creatures, the area became remarkably quiet. Snow began settling over the damaged ground, and the faint glow beneath the surface returned to a steady rhythm.
Subin walked toward the central crystalline formation.
Unlike before, the junction no longer felt like an active battlefield. It felt almost peaceful.
He placed his hand near the crystal without touching it.
Simple Edge remained silent.
There was no ancient sword intent, no trial, and no dramatic response.
Instead, Subin sensed something subtle.
The flow was no longer being forced through a single route.
It had distributed itself.
Ara noticed the same change.
"We can probably use the northern route now."
Yerin looked at her. "Toward the Floating Region?"
"Not yet. But we can reach the next junction without putting unnecessary pressure on this one."
Subin nodded.
That was enough.
They didn't need to force the dungeon open simply because a route existed.
Their objective was to understand the World Dungeon well enough that the entrances on Earth could eventually be used safely. Every region they crossed gave them another piece of that understanding.
Jae-hyun walked over to Subin and looked toward the valley where the two monsters had disappeared.
"You know, most S-rankers would have just killed the Wyrm."
"Probably."
"And most would have killed the Colossus too if it attacked."
Subin glanced at him. "It didn't."
Jae-hyun laughed quietly. "That's your standard now?"
"No. It's just what happened."
Yerin joined them, resting her spear against her shoulder. "That's actually what makes this place different from the dungeons we've dealt with on Earth. The creatures aren't simply waiting for humans to enter so they can fight."
Subin looked across the frozen landscape.
The World Dungeon was beginning to feel less like a collection of stages and more like a continent they had stepped into without understanding its geography.
There were predators, territorial creatures, environmental forces, ruins, ancient structures and enormous regions connected to one another. Some creatures fought them. Others ignored them. Some protected their surroundings without understanding the humans who had entered their world.
And the more Subin observed, the less useful the simple distinction between enemy and non-enemy became.
Ara approached with new information.
"I've finished mapping the Northern Ice Junction."
"How far to the next junction?"
"About thirty kilometers through the northern valley. After that, there's a route toward the Floating Region."
Yerin looked at her. "And the condition?"
Ara hesitated.
"Unknown."
Subin smiled faintly.
"Then we'll find out."
The expedition began packing.
They did not chase the Frostburrow Wyrm.
They did not pursue the Northern Ice Colossus.
There was nothing left to gain from fighting either creature.
Instead, they followed the newly revealed route through the frozen valley, moving deeper into the World Dungeon with the same practical objective that had brought them here in the first place.
Understand the regions.
Map the routes.
Find a safe way through.
And eventually, understand where the path back to Earth could lead.
Behind them, the Northern Ice Colossus returned to its slow circuit around the plateau.
Farther away, the Frostburrow Wyrm disappeared beneath the frozen valley.
Neither creature followed the expedition.
For the first time since entering the World Dungeon, Subin felt that they had passed through a region without conquering it.
And strangely, that felt like progress.
