Sword God
174 — The Breaking Junction
The moment the expedition descended into Frostfall Basin, the environment became noticeably more violent. Snow swept across the valley in spiraling currents, carrying fragments of ice that struck the surrounding cliffs hard enough to leave cracks in the frozen stone. The enormous crystalline junction at the center of the basin continued to lean toward one side, its fractured surface glowing intermittently as mana surged through it. Every pulse sent a wave through the ground, and each wave was followed by another collapse somewhere around the basin.
The Frostfall Devourer remained attached to the junction.
Its enormous body was positioned directly beneath the damaged structure, while the crystalline tendrils extending from its back disappeared into the broken core. Dark-blue energy flowed between the creature and the junction in both directions. The creature wasn't simply consuming the mana. It was receiving the unstable energy and circulating it through its own body before returning part of it to the network.
Ara watched the readings with growing concern.
“The connection is much deeper than we thought. Its tendrils have entered the damaged channels of the junction. If we cut them carelessly, the remaining structure could collapse.”
Rafael looked across the basin. “Then what are we supposed to do? Stand here and watch it fall?”
“We need to separate the creature from the damaged sections without interrupting the remaining flow,” Ara replied.
Jae-hyun gave her a tired look. “That sounds considerably easier when you say it.”
Subin was already studying the basin.
The junction wasn't failing uniformly. Several sections were still glowing with stable mana, while others flickered between light and darkness. The creature's body was drawing heavily from one of the unstable sections, but the surrounding network was compensating by redirecting energy through the others.
Subin pointed toward the western side.
“That section is still stable.”
Ara checked the readings.
“Yes. It is receiving energy from the Citadel.”
“And the eastern channel?”
“Almost completely disconnected.”
Subin looked toward the creature.
“If the eastern channel collapses, the pressure will shift into the western section.”
Ara's expression changed.
“That could overload it.”
“And then the entire junction collapses.”
The situation was becoming clearer.
They couldn't simply fight the Frostfall Devourer.
They couldn't repair the junction while the creature remained connected to it.
And they couldn't forcefully disconnect the creature without risking a chain reaction.
The expedition needed to control the flow first.
Subin looked at the surrounding terrain.
“How many stable channels?”
Ara scanned the basin again.
“Three.”
“Can we access them?”
“Yes, but one is beneath the creature.”
Subin nodded.
“Then we'll stabilize the other two first.”
Yerin immediately understood the plan.
“We divide the pressure.”
“Exactly.”
The expedition split into three groups. Yerin, Jae-hyun, and Liu Wei moved toward the western channel, while Ethan, Rafael, and Diego headed toward the northern section. Subin and Ara remained near the central junction, where they could monitor the changes and respond if the structure began collapsing.
The first group reached the western channel just as another wave of mana passed through the basin.
A wall of ice erupted from the ground.
Jae-hyun cut through it before it could separate them.
“The environment is reacting faster!”
Ara shouted from the central area. “The junction just dropped to thirty-eight percent!”
Yerin planted her spear into the ground and released her mana, creating a stabilizing field around the channel. Liu Wei followed by cutting away several unstable crystal formations while Jae-hyun maintained a defensive position against the creatures emerging from the snow.
They were not ordinary monsters.
Several Frostmane creatures had followed the migration toward the basin, but now their behavior had changed. The unstable mana was agitating them, forcing them to attack anything nearby.
Jae-hyun blocked the charge of a large horned beast and redirected it toward the side of the valley.
“Don't kill them if you can avoid it!”
Yerin understood immediately.
The animals were reacting to the environmental disturbance, just as the expedition had seen earlier.
She used the shaft of her spear to knock one aside rather than piercing it.
Meanwhile, Ethan's group reached the northern channel.
The ground there had already fractured.
Rafael planted both feet and released his defensive ability, creating a barrier against the collapsing ice while Ethan cut through the largest crystalline formations.
Diego coordinated the flow of mana between them.
“There's too much pressure coming from the basin!”
Ethan gritted his teeth.
“Then we'll have to give it somewhere else to go.”
He drove his mana blade into the ground and redirected the flow through an abandoned channel.
The effect was immediate.
The pressure around the northern section decreased.
Ara watched the readings.
“It's working.”
Subin remained focused on the center.
The Frostfall Devourer had noticed the changes.
Its head rose slowly.
Six pale eyes opened across the creature's face.
Then it roared.
The sound shook the entire basin.
The crystalline tendrils attached to its body brightened.
Subin's expression became serious.
“It knows we're changing the network.”
The creature pulled against the junction.
The damaged structure tilted further.
Ara shouted, “Stability thirty-five percent!”
Subin moved.
He crossed the basin in an instant.
The Frostfall Devourer swung one massive forelimb toward him.
Simple Edge intercepted the attack.
The impact drove Subin several meters backward, carving a deep trench through the ice beneath his feet.
The creature was stronger than its level suggested because the junction was reinforcing it.
Subin didn't attempt another direct attack.
Instead, he moved around it, watching the tendrils connected to the structure.
There were seven.
Five were deeply embedded in damaged channels.
Two were connected to stable sections.
That was the difference.
He couldn't cut the five damaged connections yet.
But the two stable connections could be severed.
If he removed those first, the creature would lose access to the stable mana supply without causing the damaged channels to collapse immediately.
Subin changed direction.
The Frostfall Devourer followed.
Its claws struck the ground repeatedly, creating shockwaves that forced Subin to move continuously.
The battle became a contest of positioning rather than raw power.
Subin waited for the creature to commit to each attack, then moved toward the tendrils rather than its body. He wasn't trying to damage the Guardian-like beast. He was trying to separate it from the network.
The first tendril appeared.
Simple Edge flashed.
The crystal broke.
The creature roared.
One stable connection disappeared.
The junction trembled but remained intact.
Ara checked the readings.
“Stability thirty-seven percent!”
Subin immediately targeted the second.
The creature reacted faster this time.
Its tail struck from behind.
Subin twisted away, but the impact still caught his shoulder and sent him across the ice.
Yerin saw him fall.
“Subin!”
He rose almost immediately.
“I’m fine.”
The Frostfall Devourer charged.
Subin didn't retreat.
He waited until the creature was almost upon him before stepping inside its attack range. Its massive head passed over him, and he drove Simple Edge upward into the second stable tendril.
The crystal shattered.
The creature recoiled.
The remaining five tendrils pulsed violently.
But the junction did not collapse.
Instead, the mana flow changed.
The pressure that had been feeding the creature through the stable channels disappeared.
For the first time, the Frostfall Devourer was no longer being reinforced by the entire junction.
Its body weakened slightly.
Ara stared at her instruments.
“The connection is decreasing!”
Subin nodded.
“Now we can separate the remaining ones.”
The creature wasn't going to allow that.
It turned toward Subin with its entire body covered in dark ice.
The environmental pressure surged.
A massive frozen wave spread across the basin.
Yerin, Jae-hyun, Liu Wei, Ethan, Rafael, and Diego all struggled against the sudden change.
Ara shouted, “It's using the remaining unstable channels directly!”
The Frostfall Devourer began drawing energy from the damaged junction.
The creature grew larger.
Crystalline armor expanded across its body.
The remaining tendrils thickened.
Jae-hyun looked toward Subin.
“It's powering itself up!”
Subin watched the transformation carefully.
The creature was becoming stronger, but the junction was becoming weaker.
The two were now competing for the same resource.
If the fight continued, one of them would eventually collapse.
Subin understood what he needed to do.
He raised Simple Edge.
His Sword Intent spread across the basin.
It did not attack the creature.
Instead, he directed the intent toward the space between the creature and the junction.
The Frostfall Devourer immediately reacted.
Its environmental control pushed back.
Ice rose between them.
Subin's Sword Intent remained steady.
The principle he had observed from the ancient frozen sword returned to his mind.
Stillness.
He didn't need to overpower the environmental mana.
He needed to maintain his own intent while everything around him changed.
Subin stopped moving.
The storm continued.
The ice continued rising.
The Frostfall Devourer continued drawing mana.
Yet the space immediately around Simple Edge remained unchanged.
Yerin understood what he was doing.
“He's creating a stable point.”
Ara looked at the readings.
“The local mana pressure is dropping around him.”
Subin took one step.
The Frostfall Devourer attacked.
Subin remained calm.
At the last moment, he shifted.
The creature's attack passed beside him.
Simple Edge cut through the third tendril.
The fourth followed.
Then the fifth.
Each cut was precise.
Each severed connection caused the junction's pressure to redistribute.
The Frostfall Devourer roared and attempted to crush him, but the creature was losing the environmental support that had made it so powerful.
Jae-hyun and Liu Wei joined the fight, striking the crystalline armor whenever the creature exposed a weak point. Yerin used her spear to force its movements away from the junction, while Ethan changed his mana blade into a shorter weapon to attack the remaining tendrils without damaging the surrounding structure.
Rafael maintained a defensive barrier around Ara, allowing her to continue monitoring the junction.
“Two connections remaining!” Ara shouted.
The Frostfall Devourer lunged toward Subin.
He stepped sideways and struck the sixth tendril.
It broke.
Only one remained.
The creature's entire body shook.
The final tendril was buried deep inside the central damaged section.
Subin looked at it.
That was the dangerous one.
If he cut it immediately, the remaining unstable energy could explode through the junction.
Ara understood the problem.
“Don't cut it yet!”
Subin stopped.
The Frostfall Devourer stood between him and the final connection.
Its body was weakening, but the creature was still powerful enough to kill someone if given an opening.
Ara studied the readings.
“We need to drain the remaining pressure first.”
“How?”
She looked toward the northern channel.
“Ethan's diversion route can handle some of it, but not enough.”
Subin looked across the basin.
The three stabilized channels were now glowing steadily.
The Citadel's network was beginning to reconnect.
That gave him an idea.
“Can we open a direct route back to the Citadel?”
Ara checked the map.
“There is an old channel beneath the basin, but it's blocked.”
“Where?”
She pointed toward the center of the basin.
“Under the junction.”
Subin looked at the damaged structure.
Then at the Frostfall Devourer.
The final connection was buried beneath both.
“We'll have to move the creature.”
Yerin stepped forward.
“We can force it away.”
Subin shook his head.
“No. It might pull the junction apart.”
He looked toward the Frostfall Devourer.
“We need it to move willingly.”
Jae-hyun stared at him.
“You're going to negotiate with that?”
Subin didn't answer.
He lowered Simple Edge.
The Frostfall Devourer watched him.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Subin released his Sword Intent completely.
The creature hesitated.
Subin wasn't threatening it anymore.
He pointed toward the remaining damaged junction.
Then toward the stabilized channels.
The creature's six eyes followed his movement.
The mana surrounding its body gradually decreased.
It seemed to understand that the network was changing.
Subin stepped backward.
The Frostfall Devourer followed.
One step.
Then another.
The final tendril stretched.
The creature hesitated again.
Subin waited.
Eventually, it moved away from the junction.
The final tendril loosened.
Ara immediately shouted.
“Now!”
Subin moved.
Simple Edge cut through the remaining connection.
The crystalline structure released a tremendous burst of energy.
But instead of exploding outward, the energy flowed into the three stabilized channels.
The basin shook.
The damaged junction rose.
The fractured sections began reconnecting.
The Frostfall Devourer staggered backward, free from the network for the first time.
It remained still for several seconds.
Then the creature lowered its head.
The system appeared.
[Regional Junction Stabilization Initiated.]
[Environmental Mana Redistribution: Active.]
[Secondary Junction Stability: 41% → 52%]
The expedition watched as the crystalline structure slowly repaired itself.
The storm weakened.
The snow stopped rotating.
Water flowing uphill returned to its natural direction.
Across the basin, the migrating creatures began moving away.
Ara stared at her instruments.
“We did it.”
Subin looked toward the Frostfall Devourer.
The creature was exhausted.
It had lost its connection to the network, but it was alive.
Yerin approached Subin.
“You could have killed it.”
“I know.”
“But you didn't.”
Subin looked at the creature.
“It wasn't the enemy.”
The Frostfall Devourer slowly turned away from the junction.
Instead of attacking the expedition, it walked toward the far side of the basin and disappeared between the mountains.
The system displayed another notification.
[Regional Junction Stabilization: 52%.]
[Citadel Connection Restored.]
[External Gate Synchronization: 18% → 27%.]
Ara immediately transmitted the results to the Citadel.
Director Kang responded within seconds.
“Subin, we've received the change. The Arctic gate stability has increased.”
“How much?”
“Seventy-four percent and rising.”
The expedition exchanged looks.
They had achieved their first measurable result.
The World Dungeon's network could be repaired.
More importantly, repairing an internal junction directly improved the connection between Earth and the dungeon.
But Ara was still staring at the map.
“There's a problem.”
Subin turned toward her.
The Frostfall Basin was no longer flashing red.
Most of the junction had turned blue.
But one route remained dark.
It extended beyond the eastern mountains.
Ara enlarged it.
“The Citadel is connected again, but this route isn't.”
“Where does it lead?”
Ara checked the regional data.
“The Floating Region.”
Subin looked toward the mountains.
The mission had just expanded.
They had repaired the first damaged junction, but the network was still incomplete. If they wanted to understand the World Dungeon's larger structure and stabilize more external connections, they would have to follow the remaining routes and repair the other damaged junctions.
The Citadel had been their first regional control point.
Frostfall Basin had been their first successful repair.
Now the map was showing them the next connection.
A route toward the Floating Region.
Subin sheathed Simple Edge.
“Let's return to the Citadel.”
Yerin looked at the eastern route.
“And after that?”
Subin glanced toward the distant mountains.
“We find out what happened to the next junction.”
The expedition began leaving the basin as the restored network sent a steady pulse through the Frozen Frontier. Far above them, the Arctic gate on Earth stabilized further, while deep within the World Dungeon another connection began responding to the repaired junction.
For the first time, the expedition was no longer merely discovering the dungeon's network.
They were learning how to restore it.
