Chapter 1542: Shadow Guards
Chapter 1542: Shadow Guards
Flora didn’t understand what was going on, but his father had never done anything meaningless.
He promised the badge would help her.
Although she didn’t know what was going on, she was still following his directions.
’Six Street… Six Bears…’ Flora raised her head, finding the alley. As her father had said, there was indeed a restaurant in such a dark alley.
She carefully opened the door and took a peek inside.
The restaurant was not really popular, but there were still a few customers around.
“Oh, Master. One more beer for me!”
“Got it.”
Flora observed the so-called ’Master’ carefully. She didn’t feel any ena from him, so he shouldn’t be a summoner. At the very least, she had enough strength to protect herself.
Flora walked to the counter. “I want to order.”
“First time here? What do you like to eat?” The master was a bald, middle-aged man with a short black beard. He asked casually while grabbing a mug for the beer.
Flora slowly took out the badge that her father had given her.
“…” The master halted his step for a second and grabbed the badge, sliding it back to Flora carefully so that no one saw it. “Welcome, Esteemed Guest. Your room is on the second floor, the furthest room on the right.”
Flora had never heard anything about this restaurant before. It looked like Julius still had several tricks up his sleeve.
Then again, as the oldest kingdom in the world, it was only natural to have a lot of hidden cards.
Flora followed the directions and opened the door to the room. It was a private room for a restaurant, but the meaning changed when she actually felt ena filling this room.
“!!!” Flora looked down, realizing that there was a teleportation circle within this room.
She hurriedly released her ena, but it was too late for her escape, nor did she intend to.
She was teleported into a dark stone room.
“Where is this?” Flora muttered before raising her guard when she sensed a presence coming toward her.
A silhouette appeared before her and suddenly fell to one knee. “I greet Your Highness Flora.”
“Huh?” Flora was confused at first, but that confusion turned into a big shock when she saw who was actually the silhouette.
“One-Eyed Vista?”
“It is I, Your Highness,” confirmed the man.
“What? You’re still alive? You were supposed to pass away 10 years ago?” Flora gasped.
Vista asked, “May I know how much you have learned about this place?”
Flora shook her head. “His Majesty only told me to come to this place after giving me a badge.”
“I see.” Vista nodded in understanding. “I’d like to explain it to you, but how about we get going first?”
Flora thought for a moment before agreeing. “Understood. Let’s do that.”
“Thank you.” Vista rose and turned to the side, extending his hand to lead the way. “This way.”
While walking, Flora asked, “Who are you? Why are you, a man who was supposed to have died a decade ago, here?”
“We are known by one name, the Shadow Guards. All our members are registered as people who have died.
“We only have one mission. It is to follow the order of our master. Nothing else. If our master wants someone to die, that person will die.
“And you, the possessor of the badge, are our current master.”
“!!!” Flora had definitely heard about this. When the king wanted someone to die, that person would die.
When there was a problem within the country, this problem was solved mysteriously. She thought it was the wise decision of the king, but it turned out to be the doing of a secret task force.
“So, you are the guardians who are maintaining the balance and the safety of this country from the shadows.”
“That’s why we’re called the Shadow Guards.”
Flora looked down, contemplating. Why did her father leave them to her?
After some thoughts, she reached another conclusion. “To what extent can I ask for your service?”
“We are willing to do everything for the master of the Shadow Guards. We won’t hesitate to carry out any orders, including to kill ourselves.”
“Do you mean I can even order you to eliminate my brothers and sisters?” Flora squinted her eyes, testing the limits of their mission.
“We are even willing to assassinate the king.”
“!!!” Flora felt chills down her spine. He even boldly stated such a treasonous thing in front of a princess. “You…”
“Of course. For such a remark, I’m willing if you behead me right now. However, this is the nature of the Shadow Guards.
“The Shadow Guards is a small organization that has been guarding this kingdom for 700 years.
“The next successor of the Shadow Guards has to be someone who has carried a huge risk but has the quality of a monarch. He or she should not possess any quality that could be used to misuse this kind of power.
“That’s the requirement to become the successor. And apparently, His Majesty has deemed that you are worthy to be the next master of the Shadow Guards.”
Flora sucked in a cold breath. “But I don’t intend to re-enter politics, let alone become a queen.”
“To become the master of the Shadow Guards doesn’t necessarily require you to become a queen.
“There were a few generations where the possessors of this badge were not monarchs. They protected the kingdom in the shadows. Once their life ended, they ultimately passed this badge to the next person who was worthy.”
Flora’s expression turned grim. She could somehow understand why her father had actually given her this badge.
“It looks like Your Highness needs to do something. May I know what it is?” He asked.
“I need to research the Asura Palace. I will handle the investigation itself because I plan to go deep into alien territory.” Flora realized something. “What I’m planning to do is extremely risky. What happens if I lose this badge or maybe die before passing this badge?”
“In such a scenario, that badge will return to His Majesty, the previous possessor, unless you have nominated another person in your will. However, please know one thing. There is one absolute requirement to become the successor. They need to have the blood of the royal family.”
“I see.”
“We have arrived. Allow me to present to you the Shadow Guards.” Vista opened the door in front.
