Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 55: The Survivor’s Story

  • Next Chapter

Rain continued falling beyond the stained-glass windows of the Nightmare Grand Hotel library.

The storm had settled into a steady rhythm now.

Soft thunder.

Distant wind.

The crackling fireplace cast warm orange light across the room while shadows danced over ancient bookshelves.

No one spoke.

Not even Lilith.

The little monster queen sat pressed gently against Lyra while the exhausted girl tried to steady her breathing.

Gene watched carefully from across the table.

She looked terrified.

Not of them.

Of remembering.

Finally, Lyra wiped her eyes shakily and spoke.

“My world was called Eldorwyn.”

Her voice was soft.

Fragile.

“It wasn’t… special.”

She gave a weak laugh.

“At least, not compared to places like this.”

Selene Mooncrest shook her head gently.

“Every world matters.”

Lyra smiled faintly at that.

Then the smile faded.

“I was born the daughter of Duke Harren Vale.”

Moira Valecourt immediately perked up slightly.

“A noble house?”

Lyra nodded.

“One of the smaller ones.”

She stared into the fireplace.

“My father managed one of the western provinces. Mostly forests and trade roads.”

Gene tilted his head slightly.

“Then why become an adventurer?”

A tiny bit of warmth entered her expression.

“Because noble parties are awful.”

Aurelia immediately looked offended.

“They are not that bad.”

Cassian glanced sideways at her and mumbled, “They absolutely are.”

Aurelia crossed her arms in a pout.

That earned the faintest hint of a smile from Lyra.

The first real smile Gene had seen from her.

Then it disappeared again.

⸻

The Adventurer’s Daughter

“I hated sitting in manors,” Lyra continued softly.

“My brothers loved politics and sword tournaments, but I always wanted to travel.”

She folded her hands tightly together.

“So I became an adventurer instead.”

Gene blinked.

“Your family allowed that?”

Lyra shrugged weakly.

“My mother nearly fainted.”

Cassian snorted quietly.

“I believe it.”

“But my father…” Lyra’s expression softened painfully. “He said if I was going to ignore tradition anyway, I might as well become strong enough to survive it.”

For a moment, Gene could almost picture it.

A younger Lyra laughing on forest roads.

Traveling between towns.

Taking escort missions.

Hunting monsters.

Living freely.

The contrast between that image and the broken girl sitting before them now made his chest tighten.

“What kind of adventurer?” Selene asked gently.

Lyra looked slightly embarrassed.

“Scout mostly. Tracking. Escort work.”

Lilith tilted her head.

“You fought monsters?”

“Sometimes.”

“Cool.”

Lyra blinked at the enthusiastic praise.

“…Thank you?”

Lilith nodded seriously.

“Adventurers are awesome.”

Gene decided not to mention that Lilith herself technically qualified as a world-ending monster.

⸻

The Escort Mission

Lyra’s hands tightened slightly around the untouched tea beside her.

“The invasion started while I was on an escort mission.”

The room quieted immediately.

“I was traveling with a merchant caravan near the eastern valleys.”

Her eyes unfocused slightly.

“As soon as the sky changed… we knew something was wrong.”

Gene frowned.

“The sky?”

Lyra nodded slowly.

“It turned red.”

Silence settled over the room again.

“The clouds split apart and that giant eye appeared.”

Even recalling it visibly terrified her.

“The world started… changing.”

She swallowed hard.

“Animals went mad first.”

“The forests became dangerous overnight.”

“Then people started disappearing.”

Moira scribbled notes rapidly.

“Corruption spread pattern…”

Lyra nodded weakly.

“At first everyone thought it was just monsters.”

Her voice trembled slightly.

“But monsters don’t organize armies.”

Gene leaned back slowly.

The cult had planned everything carefully.

World by world.

Systematically.

“How fast did they take control?” Cassian asked quietly.

Lyra looked toward him.

“Too fast.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“They already had people inside our world.”

Everyone stiffened.

“Nobles.”

“Priests.”

“Merchants.”

“Even summoners.”

Aurelia’s face darkened.

“Cult infiltrators.”

Lyra nodded.

“They sabotaged defenses before the invasion even began.”

Gene rubbed his forehead slowly.

Just like the warnings in their own world.

The cult had likely already infiltrated parts of society here too.

Maybe deeply.

Maybe everywhere.

⸻

The Fall of Eldorwyn

Lyra stared into the fire for several long seconds before continuing.

“The capital lasted eleven days.”

Nobody interrupted her.

“The western provinces fell first.”

“The northern cities after that.”

She spoke quietly.

Like someone describing a nightmare they still couldn’t wake from.

“The cult summoned creatures I’d never seen before.”

“Things made of shadows.”

“Creatures stitched together from dead summons.”

“People with hollow crowns burned into their skin.”

Lilith held her hand tighter.

Gene noticed Lyra unconsciously squeezing back.

“My family tried to hold the western wall.”

Her voice grew smaller.

“My father called every summoner he could.”

The room felt colder now.

Even the fire seemed dimmer somehow.

“We thought we could survive if we protected the world core.”

Selene frowned.

“The world core?”

Moira answered quietly.

“The central magical anchor of a summoner world.”

Gene blinked.

“That sounds incredibly important.”

“It is.”

Lyra nodded weakly.

“If the core falls… the world starts dying.”

Gene’s stomach tightened.

And the cult already controlled seventeen.

Seventeen entire worlds.

How powerful had they become already?

⸻

Her Final Battle

Lyra’s breathing became uneven.

Selene quietly moved closer beside her.

“You don’t have to force yourself.”

“I know.”

But she continued anyway.

“On the ninth day… my family manor fell.”

Silence.

“My mother died defending the evacuation tunnels.”

Aurelia lowered her eyes immediately.

“My eldest brother was killed protecting refugees.”

Lyra’s voice cracked harder.

“My younger brother…”

She stopped completely for a moment.

Lilith hugged her tighter immediately.

Gene saw tears sliding silently down Lyra’s face.

“The cult turned him into one of those things.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

“The last time I saw him…”

Her shoulders shook.

“He was wearing one of their masks.”

The library remained deathly silent except for the storm outside.

Even the Caretaker near the doorway seemed unnaturally still.

Gene felt sick.

Not shocked.

Not surprised.

Just angry.

A slow, burning anger growing hotter with every word.

⸻

The Priest

Lyra eventually wiped her eyes again.

“After the manor fell, I escaped with a few survivors.”

“We kept moving between ruined towns trying to avoid patrols.”

Her expression softened slightly.

“That’s when we found Father Orion.”

Moira looked up immediately.

“A priest?”

Lyra nodded.

“He guarded one of the old temples.”

Unlike before, there was genuine warmth in her voice now.

“He was ancient.”

“Terrible at whispering.”

“Completely fearless.”

Lilith smiled slightly.

“I like him already.”

“So did everyone else.”

Lyra laughed weakly through her tears.

“He kept calling the cultists ‘disrespectful idiots.’”

Cassian snorted quietly.

“Brave man.”

“He was.”

Her smile faded slowly.

“He knew Eldorwyn was dying.”

The room quieted again.

“He said the world core had already been corrupted.”

Gene frowned.

“Then why keep fighting?”

Lyra looked toward him.

“Because some things deserve resistance even when you lose.”

That hit harder than Gene expected.

⸻

The Box

“The cult attacked the temple three nights later.”

Lyra’s hands shook slightly now.

“There were too many.”

“Summoners.”

“Monsters.”

“Shadow creatures.”

Her breathing quickened.

“Father Orion held them back while the rest of us escaped through the lower tunnels.”

Selene gently rested a hand on her shoulder.

Lyra nodded thankfully before continuing.

“He stopped me before I left.”

Slowly—

Very slowly—

Lyra reached into the satchel beside her chair.

The room immediately grew tense.

Even the Caretaker subtly shifted.

But instead of a weapon—

She pulled out a small metal box.

Black steel.

Covered in faded silver markings.

Gene immediately sat forward.

“The priest gave you that?”

Lyra nodded.

“He said it was hidden beneath the temple for generations.”

Her voice became quieter.

“He told me only one person could be trusted with it.”

Gene already knew the answer before she spoke again.

“The horror summoner.”

Everyone looked toward Gene.

Even he looked uncomfortable about that title now.

Lyra swallowed nervously.

“He said the worlds of nightmare and dream were the last hope against the Hollow King.”

The storm outside thundered loudly.

Almost like punctuation.

Gene stared at the box carefully.

It looked ancient.

Older than the summoning system itself somehow.

“What else did he say?” Moira asked quietly.

Lyra looked toward the fireplace again.

“He told me to survive.”

Her voice trembled.

“To find Mystic Blood Valley.”

“To find Gene Gingerline.”

“And to never let the cult take the gem.”

Slowly—

Carefully—

She opened the box.

Purple light spilled softly across the library.

Inside rested a slender crystalline gem glowing faintly from within.

The moment it appeared—

Selene’s necklace reacted instantly.

Silver light pulsed brightly.

The blue gem resting nearby answered.

Then the crimson gem.

Three lights resonated together.

The air vibrated softly.

Gene felt the chaos armor around his wrist twitch excitedly.

System windows flashed briefly across his vision.

GEM RESONANCE DETECTED

CHAOS EVOLUTION CONDITIONS PARTIALLY MET

Gene immediately ignored that for the moment.

Because everyone in the room stared silently at the purple gem.

Three gems now.

Only four remaining.

Lilith looked between the glowing crystals wide-eyed.

“They’re talking to each other.”

Moira looked pale.

“She’s right.”

Cassian slowly stood despite his injuries.

“The prophecy…”

Aurelia looked unsettled.

“You really think these things can stop the Hollow King?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Because none of them knew.

Gene carefully lifted the purple gem from the box.

Unlike the others…

This one felt strange.

Heavy.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

As though countless voices whispered just beyond hearing.

Then suddenly…

The library lights flickered violently.

The gems pulsed together once.

Twice.

And somewhere deep beneath the mountains surrounding Mystic Blood Valley—

Something ancient roared.
