Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 46: Chomper’s Very Busy Day

  • Next Chapter

If anyone had asked Chomper what he wanted most in life, the mimic would have answered with absolute sincerity:

1. Snacks.

2. Shiny things.

3. Praise from Gene.

4. More snacks.

5. The occasional burglar.

As far as Chomper was concerned, his life at the Nightmare Grand Hotel, now proudly situated in the ever-expanding world of Mystic Blood Valley, was close to perfect.

He had his own polished brass nameplate.

He had a favorite spot in the lobby.

He had a tiny velvet cushion that Lilith insisted made him look “distinguished.”

And most importantly, he had a family.

Not bad for a creature that had once spent its days pretending to be a forgotten treasure chest and trying to eat anything foolish enough to get close.

Now Chomper had responsibilities.

Important ones.

He was the official lobby guardian, occasional teaching assistant, and part-time snack disposal specialist.

Which was why his day began before sunrise.

⸻

Morning Stretch

The lobby was quiet.

Soft blue twilight filtered through stained-glass windows.

Most of the hotel still slept.

Chomper yawned.

For a mimic, this involved his lid opening wide enough to reveal row after row of gleaming teeth and a surprisingly pink tongue.

He stretched his hinges with a series of creaks and clacks.

Then he extended four stubby wooden legs and hopped off his cushion.

The brass nameplate mounted to his front read:

CHOMPER

Head of First Impressions

Lilith had insisted on the title.

Chomper was very proud of it.

He scuttled to the front doors, checked the locks, and gave them an approving chomp.

Secure.

Good.

He made a slow patrol around the lobby.

No burglars.

No suspicious footprints.

No unattended pastries.

A productive start.

⸻

Breakfast Inspection

The aroma of fresh bread drifted from the kitchens.

Chomper’s tongue rolled out instinctively.

He scuttled toward the scent at top speed, legs tapping rapidly across the marble floor.

In the kitchen, Chef Lucien Delacroix stood in immaculate white attire, orchestrating breakfast preparations with theatrical precision.

“Ah, Monsieur Chomper.”

The mimic chirped happily.

Lucien presented a tray.

“Quality control.”

This was Chomper’s second-favorite phrase in the world.

Lucien offered him a slightly overbaked croissant.

Chomper snapped it up in a single bite.

Crunch.

He closed his eyes and wiggled with delight.

Lucien smiled.

“Excellent. Your standards remain impeccable.”

Pierre the French Cart rattled approvingly.

Chomper puffed out his lid with pride.

He then received two burned sausages, a stale biscuit, and a potato wedge that had fallen on the floor for less than three seconds.

A magnificent breakfast.

⸻

Lobby Duty

By the time guests and residents began moving through the hotel, Chomper was back at his station.

He sat perfectly still beside the reception desk, pretending to be an ordinary treasure chest.

This was more difficult than it sounded.

Especially when children passed by carrying sticky buns.

The first to greet him was Hank, the night security guard.

Hank tipped his hat.

“Mornin’, Chomper.”

Chomper opened one eye.

Hank tossed him a copper coin.

Chomper swallowed it with a happy clink.

A few minutes later, the front doors opened and Lilith skipped inside with Fluffy bounding behind her.

“Good morning, Chomper!”

Chomper chirped.

Lilith hugged him.

He tolerated this because she always smelled like cookies.

She placed a ribbon around his latch.

“There. Fancy.”

Chomper loved the ribbon.

He would deny this to anyone who asked.

⸻

Security Incident Number One

Around midmorning, a traveling merchant entered the hotel.

He was tall, nervous, and carrying a large sack over one shoulder.

He approached the reception desk, glanced at Chomper, and smirked.

“A decorative chest,” he muttered.

He reached down and patted Chomper’s lid.

Chomper bit his hand.

“YEOW!”

The merchant stumbled backward, clutching his fingers.

Hank looked up from his newspaper.

“Sir, the chest is working.”

The merchant stared in disbelief as Chomper settled back into his innocent, inanimate pose.

Lilith, who had witnessed the whole thing, clapped.

“Good job!”

Chomper wiggled proudly.

⸻

School Visit

Near midday, Chomper was invited to Midnight Academy.

The younger children adored him.

Mostly because he occasionally ate their failed art projects.

Mother Sarah stood at the front of the classroom.

Mother Sarah adjusted her spectacles.

“Class, what do we say before feeding Mr. Chomper?”

The children chorused, “Please don’t eat our fingers!”

“Excellent.”

Today’s lesson involved identifying safe and unsafe magical objects.

Mother Sarah held up drawings.

“Is this cursed doll safe?”

“No!”

“Correct.”

“Is this smiling treasure chest safe?”

The children glanced at Chomper.

He opened his mouth slightly.

“Sometimes!”

Mother Sarah nodded.

“Also correct.”

Chomper received three wooden blocks and a slightly bent spoon for his participation.

Educational outreach was deeply rewarding.

⸻

Nap Time

Being a professional mimic was exhausting.

After lunch, Chomper retreated to his favorite sunny spot beneath the grand staircase.

He curled up, lid slightly ajar.

Inside his spacious interior were his treasured possessions:

• Forty-seven shiny coins.

• Three marbles.

• A toy knight missing one arm.

• A silver spoon.

• Two ribbons.

• A signed drawing from Lilith.

• A squeaky rubber duck of mysterious origin.

He rearranged everything carefully.

Then he fell asleep.

He dreamed of a gigantic croissant chasing him through a field of gold coins.

⸻

Afternoon Adventure

Chomper awoke to the scent of danger.

And cheese.

Someone unfamiliar was sneaking through the hallway near the armory.

Chomper extended his legs and crept silently after the intruder.

The culprit was a young boy from Thornwatch.

He had slipped away from a tour group and was trying to pry open a display case containing an enchanted dagger.

Chomper inched closer.

The boy turned.

“Ooh! Treasure chest!”

The mimic sighed internally.

It happened every time.

The boy reached out.

Chomper opened his lid and growled.

The boy screamed and ran.

The dagger remained secure.

Chomper received a pat from Captain Stringer.

“Excellent… work… Officer Chomper.”

Praise from law enforcement was highly satisfying.

⸻

Tea Party

In the late afternoon, Lilith hosted a tea party in her playroom.

Attendance was mandatory for all favorite friends.

Present were:

• Lilith

• Fluffy

• Chomper

• Two stuffed bears

• The Caretaker

• Jesse Belle

The Caretaker sat awkwardly in a tiny chair.

Jesse Belle wore a flowered hat.

Lilith poured invisible tea into toy cups.

Chomper received a saucer of actual sugar cubes.

He consumed them with enthusiasm.

“Chomper,” Lilith said seriously, “you are very distinguished.”

Chomper puffed up with pride.

The Caretaker gave him a solemn thumbs-up.

A perfect afternoon.

⸻

Evening Excitement

As dusk settled over the hotel, Gene returned to the lobby.

Gene Gingerline knelt beside Chomper and scratched the mimic’s polished lid.

“Good work today, buddy.”

Chomper made a happy rattling noise.

Gene handed him a silver coin.

A premium snack.

Then Gene lowered his voice.

“Keep an eye out tonight, okay?”

Chomper straightened immediately.

This was an important assignment.

He would not fail.

⸻

Security Incident Number Two

Late that evening, a drunken traveler stumbled into the lobby.

He glanced around and slurred, “Nice box.”

He attempted to sit on Chomper.

This was a mistake.

The mimic opened his lid and launched the man several feet into a potted plant.

Hank looked over.

“Sir, the chest is not a chair.”

The traveler groaned.

Chomper settled back into position with smug satisfaction.

⸻

Bedtime

Near midnight, the hotel quieted.

The chandeliers dimmed.

Guests retired to their rooms.

The moon cast silver patterns across the marble floor.

Lilith appeared in her pajamas, carrying a blanket.

“Night, Chomper.”

She draped the tiny blanket over him.

Chomper chirped softly.

Lilith kissed his lid.

“Love you.”

Then she scampered off.

Chomper sat in silence for a long moment.

He looked at the drawing stored safely inside him.

At his ribbons.

At his shiny treasures.

At the cozy lobby that had become his home.

Once, he had been a monster with no purpose beyond hunger.

Now he had friends.

A family.

A title.

And a little girl who loved him.

Chomper tucked the blanket around himself.

He closed his lid with a contented click.

Tomorrow would bring more coins.

More snacks.

More security incidents.

Maybe even a burglar if he was very lucky.

But for now, Chomper slept peacefully in the heart of the Nightmare Grand Hotel.

The proud guardian of the lobby.

The terror of unattended fingers.

And one very happy mimic.
