Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 45: Mooncrest Secrets

  • Next Chapter

Selene Mooncrest had always loved the road home.

Even as a child, she found comfort in the long silver path that wound through enchanted forests and rolling moonlit hills toward the ancestral seat of House Mooncrest.

The journey felt like stepping through the pages of a storybook she had known by heart since birth.

Tonight, however, that familiar road felt different.

Heavier.

The portal behind her had closed with a whisper, leaving her alone beneath a sky of pale stars.

Her moonstone necklace—usually cool and comforting against her skin—still pulsed faintly with residual energy from the vault.

Selene pressed a hand over it.

The stone throbbed once, like the heartbeat of something sleeping.

Or waiting.

She looked back toward the direction of Mystic Blood Valley.

Though the merged world was far away, she could still sense Gene through their bond.

A steady warmth in the back of her mind.

Grounding.

Comforting.

A smile touched her lips.

Gene was probably pacing the lobby, trying to explain prophecies, hidden missions, and mysterious mountains to a room full of monsters and schoolchildren.

The thought soothed her.

Then she turned and continued toward home.

⸻

The Mooncrest Estate

The Mooncrest family manor stood atop a high hill overlooking silver forests and crystal lakes.

Calling it a manor was technically accurate.

Calling it a mega palace was much more honest.

White marble walls shimmered with enchantments that made them glow like moonlit snow. Slender towers rose into the sky, each crowned with crystal spires that chimed softly in the wind.

Elegant bridges arched over reflecting pools.

Moonflowers bloomed in immaculate gardens.

Dozens of magical lanterns drifted through the night like captive stars.

Selene slowed as she reached the gates.

For the first time in years, she felt like a little girl again.

The necklace at her throat pulsed.

The silver gates swung open on their own.

They recognized her.

They always would.

Two household knights in polished armor bowed deeply.

“Lady Selene.”

She smiled politely.

“Good evening.”

One of the knights looked surprised.

“We were not informed you would be visiting.”

Selene touched her necklace.

“This counts as an emergency. ”

⸻

A Family Reunion

The grand doors opened before she could knock.

A blur of blue silk launched itself down the steps.

“Selene!”

Her mother, Lady Evelyne Mooncrest, enveloped her in a hug that smelled faintly of lavender and moon lilies.

Selene laughed despite herself.

“Hello, Mother.”

Evelyne stepped back and cupped her daughter’s face.

Her mother was as beautiful as ever—silver-blonde hair, luminous eyes, and a warm smile that made every room brighter.

Then she frowned.

“You look troubled.”

Before Selene could answer, a booming voice echoed through the hall.

“My daughter returns!”

Lord Alaric Mooncrest descended the staircase with surprising speed for a man of his size.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in robes embroidered with silver dragons, Selene’s father looked more like a warrior king than a noble lord.

He swept Selene into a crushing hug.

“Welcome home, little moonbeam!”

Selene wheezed.

“Father… oxygen…”

He set her down immediately.

“Ah. Right.”

Evelyne swatted his arm.

“You’re trying to break her.”

“Nonsense. She’s sturdier than she looks.”

Selene smiled.

For a moment, the anxiety in her chest eased.

Then her father noticed her expression.

His smile faded.

“Is something wrong?”

Selene touched the glowing necklace.

“Unfortunately.”

The warmth in the room shifted.

Both parents went very still.

Evelyne’s eyes widened.

Alaric’s jaw tightened.

The sight told Selene everything she needed to know.

“Why does it seem like you know what this is.”

⸻

The Family Library

An hour later, the three of them sat in the private Mooncrest library.

The room was circular and impossibly tall, filled with ancient books, celestial charts, and relics older than many kingdoms.

Moonlight filtered through the domed crystal ceiling.

A fire crackled softly in the hearth.

Tea steamed untouched on the table.

Selene sat opposite her parents.

Her necklace glowed faintly.

No one spoke for several moments.

Finally, Alaric exhaled heavily.

“We wished this day would never come.”

Selene folded her hands to keep them from trembling.

“Well then, tell me the truth.”

Evelyne reached across the table and covered Selene’s hand.

“We were waiting until the right time to tell you the family secret.”

Selene raised an eyebrow.

“I helped merge two pocket worlds, uncovered an ancient prophecy, and we opened a vault sealed for eons.”

Her voice sharpened.

“If this isn’t the right time, Mother, I’d hate to see what qualifies.”

Evelyne winced.

Alaric nodded.

“She’s right dear.”

He rose and walked to a locked cabinet at the far end of the room.

After a series of keys and magical seals, he withdrew a velvet-wrapped bundle.

He placed it on the table.

Inside lay an ancient silver circlet and a worn leather journal.

Selene recognized the handwriting on the first page.

Her grandmother’s.

Alaric returned to his seat.

“Everything begins with your grandmother.”

⸻

The Last Dreamseer

Selene had adored her grandmother.

Lady Seraphina Mooncrest was equal parts gentle scholar and mysterious storyteller.

As a child, Selene loved curling up beside her while the older woman spoke of distant realms and forgotten magic.

There was one story Seraphina told more than any other.

The World of Dreams and Nightmares.

Selene had always assumed it was only a fairy tale.

Alaric opened the journal.

“She was the last Dreamseer.”

Selene frowned.

“What is a Dreamseer?”

Evelyne answered softly.

“A summoner whose bloodline resonates with realms beyond ordinary fiction.”

Alaric nodded.

“Most summoners pull from stories that already exist.”

He tapped the glowing necklace.

“The Dreamseer line can access deeper realms. Archetypal worlds. Primordial domains.”

Selene’s pulse quickened.

“Like Mystic Blood Valley.”

“Yes.”

The room felt suddenly smaller.

Selene looked down at the necklace.

“This belonged once belonged to your grandmother.”

Evelyne nodded.

“It was her focus and her key.”

Selene swallowed.

“She knew this would happen?”

Alaric’s expression darkened.

“She feared it.”

⸻

The Prophecy Revisited

Alaric retrieved another document from the journal.

An older, more complete version of the prophecy from the vault.

He read aloud.

When summoners forget the sacred balance,

and ambition devours wonder,

the Gates of Hollow Dreams shall tremble.

From moonlit blood and shadowed heart,

two sovereign souls shall awaken the hidden valley.

Their union shall restore what was severed.

Their love shall unlock the inheritance.

Yet should they fail,

the Devourer Beyond the Veil shall consume all worlds.

Selene listened in stunned silence.

“Moonlit blood and shadowed heart,” she whispered.

Evelyne smiled gently.

“You and Gene.”

Selene’s cheeks warmed despite the gravity of the situation.

“Apparently.”

Alaric closed the journal.

“Your grandmother believed our family descended from one of the original guardians who sealed the Devourer.”

Selene’s hand tightened around her teacup.

“And the necklace?”

“It is one of several keys.”

Her breath caught.

“There are more?”

Alaric and Evelyne exchanged a look.

“Yes.”

⸻

The Locked Box

Selene leaned forward.

“There was a box in the Fourth Tower that reacted to my necklace.”

Evelyne paled.

Alaric muttered something under his breath.

Selene’s heart pounded.

“What is inside?”

“We do not know,” Alaric admitted.

Her eyebrows rose.

“You don’t know?”

“No one has opened it in thousands of years.”

Evelyne’s voice trembled.

“Only the rightful inheritor can awaken what lies within.”

Selene instinctively touched the necklace.

“And you think that inheritor is me.”

Alaric looked at her with equal parts pride and concern.

“Well it would be the both of you.”

Selene sat back slowly.

The implications were staggering.

The prophecy.

The hidden mission.

The mountain.

The box.

Gene.

Her gaze drifted to the moonlit window.

He would make a joke about how they had accidentally become the protagonists of a cosmic fantasy.

And somehow, the thought made her feel stronger.

⸻

Grandmother’s Warning

Selene continued reading through Seraphina’s journal.

Most entries were research notes.

The final pages, however, were deeply personal.

One passage caught her attention.

If my granddaughter ever reads this, know that love will be the key.

Do not fear the darkness if the one beside you carries light into your heart.

Trust the shadow-hearted man.

Together, you may succeed where we failed.

Tears blurred Selene’s vision.

Grandmother knew.

Somehow, she had known.

Evelyne handed her a handkerchief.

“She loved you very much.”

Selene dabbed at her eyes and laughed softly.

“She also appears to have predicted my love life.”

Alaric snorted.

“Your grandmother was annoyingly perceptive.”

⸻

Questions Without Answers

The discussion continued late into the night.

They pieced together what little they knew:

• The Mooncrest bloodline descended from Dreamseers.

• Selene’s necklace was an ancient key.

• The locked box was connected to the inheritance.

• Mystic Blood Valley was central to the prophecy.

• The mysterious mountain likely concealed the final seal.

• Gene and Selene were the two sovereigns described in the prophecy.

But many questions remained unanswered.

What was the Devourer Beyond the Veil?

What lay inside the box?

Why had the Fourth Tower opened now?

Eventually, Selene rubbed her temples.

“My life was so much simpler when my biggest problem was arena duels.”

Evelyne laughed.

“You’re still participating in one, aren’t you?”

Selene groaned.

“I completely forgot.”

Alaric smiled.

“Then perhaps humiliating a jealous noblewoman will provide some stress relief.”

Selene laughed for the first time that evening.

⸻

A Daughter’s Resolve

Much later, Selene stood alone on her childhood balcony.

The silver forests stretched endlessly before her.

The necklace rested warmly against her skin.

She closed her eyes and reached through the bond she shared with Gene.

Almost immediately, she felt him.

Concern.

Love.

Steady reassurance.

Selene smiled.

Whatever destiny awaited them, she would not face it alone.

She whispered into the night.

“Grandmother… I hope we’re ready.”

A breeze stirred the curtains.

For just a moment, she thought she heard Seraphina’s voice.

Soft and familiar.

“You will be.”

Selene opened her eyes.

The stars above seemed brighter than ever.

Tomorrow, she would return to Mystic Blood Valley.

She would tell Gene everything.

And together, they would decide what came next.

But tonight, she allowed herself one final moment as the daughter of House Mooncrest.

A young woman standing at the edge of history.

Afraid.

Hopeful.

And more determined than ever to protect the people she loved.

Especially the shadow-hearted man waiting for her in a haunted hotel at the center of a world they had built together.
