Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 103: The World Beyond the Box

  • Next Chapter

There was no sunrise in the Sinbiter World.

There was no sunset.

Only an endless twilight lit by crimson lanterns hanging from iron chains that disappeared far into an endless black sky.

Cities once stood there.

Now only twisted cathedrals remained.

Their towers were built from polished black stone, impossible geometry, and countless interlocking chains that slowly shifted as if the buildings themselves breathed.

Bells rang somewhere in the distance.

Every bell tower echoed for miles.

Not as a warning.

As an invitation.

The streets were strangely clean.

No birds sang.

No wind blew.

Only the quiet rattling of chains accompanied the footsteps of those who walked its roads.

Some walked around as if town life never changed.

Others smiled despite tears streaming down their faces.

Every resident bore marks.

Hooks.

Scars.

Metal stitched into flesh.

One had replaced their eyes with gemstones.

Others had exchanged their own fingers for elegant silver instruments.

Many had willingly surrendered pieces of themselves over the countless years that passed in that world.

None believed they were prisoners.

They called themselves the Blessed.

Deep within the largest cathedral, thousands gathered before an enormous altar of black iron.

Rows upon rows of kneeling figures prayed in perfect silence.

Their voices had long ago become unnecessary.

At the front stood the High Sinbiter Priest.

His body was draped in a flowing crimson-and-black robe stitched directly into his flesh.

Fine silver chains disappeared and reappeared beneath his skin, linking the pieces of polished obsidian armor to the exposed muscles.

His face remained almost serene despite the lattice of jagged engraved metal shards crossing it.

He slowly closed the ornate puzzle box resting in his hands.

The final click echoed through the cathedral.

“The offering has been accepted.”

A ripple of quiet satisfaction spread through the congregation.

One of the younger Sinbiter stepped forward.

“Our newest brothers have finally awakened.”

The High Priest nodded.

“They have embraced our revelation.”

Massive bronze doors slowly opened.

Several figures entered.

Days earlier they had been cultists.

Now…

Their transformations were complete.

Their movements were unnaturally graceful.

Black ceremonial robes concealed bodies altered by careful ritual.

Silver hooks decorated their shoulders like medals of honor.

Their expressions were peaceful.

One by one they knelt.

“We have seen.”

“We have accepted.”

“We now understand.”

The High Priest gently rested a hand upon the first convert’s head.

“Then rise.”

“You are no longer merely cultists.”

“You are now Keepers.”

The newly transformed figures stood together.

Not slaves.

Not mindless monsters.

Believers.

The Sinbiters did not conquer through fear alone.

They offered purpose.

Those who accepted willingly became something else entirely.

Those who resisted…

Eventually stopped resisting.

Far beneath the cathedral, enormous foundries filled cavernous chambers.

Iron chains moved endlessly between giant furnaces.

Living artisans carefully forged weapons unlike any seen in ordinary worlds.

Long spears whose blades resembled interlocking vertebrae.

Towering shields decorated with intricate silver latticework.

Armor that merged seamlessly with its wearer after prolonged use.

Towering mechanical constructs carried finished equipment toward training grounds.

There…

An army drilled.

Thousands marched in perfect silence.

Their discipline rivaled Cassian’s finest knights.

Ranks advanced.

Pivoted.

Formed walls.

Separated into smaller formations.

Every movement executed with unsettling precision.

Watching from above, the High Priest folded his hands.

“Our numbers grow.”

Another priest approached.

“We now hold influence across three conquered worlds.”

The High Priest nodded.

“The first continues to produce converts.”

“The second supplies steel.”

“The third…”

He looked toward another viewing crystal.

“…provides knowledge.”

The crystal shimmered.

Inside appeared a once-prosperous summoner world.

Now black banners decorated every city.

Ancient churches had become sanctuaries devoted to the puzzle box.

People entered willingly.

Many never returned.

Those who did…

Returned changed.

The High Priest watched silently.

“The transformation progresses faster than expected.”

A younger Sinbiter hesitated.

“Will the Horror Summoner ever call for us?”

“He may.”

“So should we prepare?”

The Priest smiled faintly.

“We already are.”

He looked down toward the puzzle box resting upon a velvet cushion.

Its engraved surface slowly shifted.

Tiny metallic clicks echoed from within.

“Every soul touched by curiosity becomes another possible doorway.”

“Every conquered world becomes another seed.”

He gently picked up the box.

“Our mission was never simple conquest.”

“It was expansion.”

He turned toward a circle of waiting attendants.

“Prepare the transfer.”

Several chains descended from the cathedral ceiling carrying an elaborate stone pedestal.

The High Priest carefully placed the puzzle box upon it.

Runes ignited.

Reality rippled.

The pedestal slowly vanished.

Moments later…

Far Inside another conquered cult-controlled world…

A hidden sanctuary beneath a forgotten city shimmered with a gentle pale light.

The pedestal appeared in the center of a waiting congregation.

Several head priests immediately bowed.

“It has arrived.”

Their leader carefully approached.

He did not touch the box immediately.

Instead he whispered to himself.

“The Hollow King(praise be) has given us a great gift. If we  solve the puzzle cube it is said that we will gain a new power from inside of it.”

Then he gently lift it.

Unlike ordinary relics…

The puzzle box seemed almost warm.

It began pulsing as if it possessed a heartbeat.

The cult priest looked uneasy.

“Should we truly continue opening it?”

The leader smiled.

“You must do as the higher ups command.”

“We simply are the messengers.”

Above them, the city continued its ordinary routine.

Markets bustled.

Children laughed.

Travelers visited inns.

Nothing appeared unusual.

The corruption hid beneath normal life.

Exactly as intended.

Back within the Sinbiter World…

The High Priest walked alone through a quiet garden.

Flowers of polished silver grew from black soil.

Each bloom chimed softly when touched by invisible currents.

He stopped beside a reflecting pool.

Instead of showing his reflection…

The water revealed another image.

The Nightmare Hotel.

Gene.

Mother Sarah.

Lilith.

The Caretaker.

The growing underground laboratory.

The expanding towns.

He watched silently.

“Our cousins build.”

“So do we.”

He reached into the water.

Ripples spread.

The reflection disappeared.

One attendant approached.

“The armies await inspection.”

“Very well.”

The Priest followed.

They emerged upon a balcony overlooking an enormous valley.

What had once been wilderness had become a sprawling military encampment.

Disciplined ranks stretched to the horizon.

Engineers assembled towering siege engines of chain and steel.

Scouts mounted strange nightmare beasts bred within the conquered worlds.

Priests blessed banners stitched with intricate geometric patterns.

Smiths hammered glowing metal into fresh armor.

They pressed the still hot metal armor into the person waiting’s bare flesh.

No one shouted.

No one celebrated.

Everything moved with calm, purposeful efficiency.

The attendant quietly asked,

“When that Hollow King rises…”

“Will we march beneath his banner?”

The High Priest considered the question.

Then slowly shook his head.

“No.”

“Our paths merely cross.”

“The Hollow King seeks dominion.”

“We seek transformation.”

“If destiny allows cooperation…”

“So be it.”

His gaze lingered on the distant horizon.

“…every power eventually discovers that eternity leaves room for many kingdoms.”

The attendant bowed.

“I understand.”

The bells rang again.

Across three conquered worlds, hidden sanctuaries answered with the same solemn chime.

The sound spread from cathedral to cathedral.

From shrine to shrine.

Like a heartbeat carried across dimensions.

And resting quietly within the newest sanctuary…

The puzzle box will be waiting.

Patient.

Silent.

Ready for the next curious soul to reach out and ask it to open.
