Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 102: The Prince Who Refused to Fall

  • Next Chapter

Prince Cassian Aurelius awoke every morning before dawn.

Not because he had to.

He only did it because he no longer believed he had the luxury of sleeping in.

The Nightmare Hotel had changed him.

Months ago, he had believed strength came from noble blood, polished armor, and disciplined formations.

He had challenged Gene out of pride, convinced that a horror summoner could never stand beside the great houses of the kingdom.

Now he knew better.

He had seen worlds burn.

He had watched cultists laugh as they died.

He had nearly bled to death outside the Nightmare Hotel before the Caretaker and Jesse Belle carried him to safety.

He had watched Gene fight monsters that should not have existed.

He had seen  the little Lilith casually rip portals through reality.

He had stood before prophecies that spoke of the end of worlds.

The Prince of Solmont had come to a simple conclusion.

He wasn’t strong enough.

Not yet…

⸻

The underground training arena beneath the Nightmare Hotel was enormous.

Athena had helped Gene expand it until each side resembling a small battlefield instead of a practice room.

Artificial sunlight illuminated one half.

The other side remained in permanent twilight.

Stone castles, ruined villages, trenches, forests, and open plains could all be rearranged by Athena depending on the training exercise.

Today…

The battlefield resembled an abandoned fortress.

Cassian adjusted his gauntlets.

His polished silver armor gleamed beneath the artificial light.

Behind him stood nearly three hundred summoned knights.

Unlike Gene’s monsters, Cassian’s summons were disciplined, organized, and silent.

Each soldier stood perfectly still.

Every shield aligned.

Every spear pointed at the same angle.

Every banner fluttered proudly despite the lack of wind.

Athena’s voice echoed throughout the arena.

Training Exercise Number 412.

Objective: Survive.

Large blast doors opened.

Victor rubbed his hands together excitedly.

“Release group Seven!”

Morrigan sighed from nearby.

“You sound so happy.”

“I am happy.”

Chains rattled.

Massive containment doors slid open.

The first monsters stepped forward.

Twenty skeletal warriors.

Each carrying low ranked swords.

Behind them marched towering undead soldiers clad in broken plate armor.

Several stitched-together abominations lumbered behind them.

One creature possessed six arms.

Another dragged a giant iron anchor.

Cassian smiled.

“Formation.”

Three hundred voices answered together.

“YES, YOUR HIGHNESS!”

The battlefield shook.

Shields locked together instantly.

Spears lowered.

Archers stepped into position.

Cavalry split to both flanks.

The precision would have impressed even the greatest military commanders.

The mad doctor grinned as he rubbed his hands together.

“Oh, this’ll be so much fun.”

The undead charged.

Cassian raised his sword.

“Hold.”

His army remained perfectly still.

Thirty meters.

Twenty.

Ten.

Five.

“NOW!”

The shield wall rushed quickly forward.

The impact shattered the front skeletons bones.

Spears thrust through skulls.

Swords flashed.

Rows of skeletons collapsed before they could complete a single attack.

The larger undead crashed into the formation.

One monstrous brute swung a stone pillar.

Three knights were thrown backward.

Ans another abomination barreled through the line, Cassian finally moved.

His sword blurred.

Steel rang.

One clean strike severed the creature’s arm.

A second slash removed its head.

Black blood sprayed across the ruined courtyard.

The Prince never slowed.

He flowed through the battlefield with disciplined efficiency.

Every movement precise.

Every strike deliberate.

He wasn’t flashy.

He was effective.

Within minutes…

The battlefield fell silent.

Broken bones littered the ground.

Undead corpses slowly dissolved into dark smoke.

Athena spoke.

Exercise Complete.

Victory Time: Four Minutes.

Doctor Victor frowned dramatically.

“You keep ruining ours monsters.”

Cassian sheathed his sword.

“You both keep making better ones.”

Morrigan smiled.

“I suppose that’s fair.”

⸻

The training continued.

Again.

And again.

Every day became harder.

Athena began introducing increasingly difficult scenarios.

Ambushes.

Night battles.

Moving with limited supplies.

Civilian evacuations.

Elite enemies.

Siege warfare.

Flying monsters.

War in poison gases.

Even psychological warfare.

Cassian managed to adapt.

Whenever one strategy failed…

He changed accordingly.

When his infantry proved too slow…

He developed mounted shock units.

When flying enemies overwhelmed his archers…

He next time he summoned anti-air ballista teams.

When the undead dropped team morale…

He improved battlefield coordination.

Every weakness became another lesson for him

One afternoon…

Doctor Victor wheeled over a large chalkboard.

“It is time.”

Cassian raised an eyebrow.

“For?”

Doctor Elias pointed toward his summoned army.

“Evolution.”

Cassian frowned.

“My summons should evolve?”

The scientists exchanged amused looks.

“Everyone else’s do.”

“Why wouldn’t yours?”

Cassian had never considered it.

He had always assumed his summons simply grew stronger through experience.

“They grow through experience with you don’t they?”

Morrigan shook her head,” Although some of them do you are missing the bigger picture.”

Athena projected dozens of battle statistics into the air.

Casualty rates.

Leadership efficiency.

Strategic adaptability.

Personal combat ability.

Summon synchronization.

Every graph climbed steadily upward.

Victor pointed excitedly.

“You’re no longer just commanding soldiers.”

“You’re becoming a true General.”

The words echoed strangely inside Cassian.

Not merely just a Prince anymore.

Golden light surrounded Cassian.

His summoner crest began glowing brilliantly.

His knights all turned simultaneously toward him.

The battlefield itself seemed to hold its breath.

Words appeared before his eyes.

Unique Ability Unlocked

Royal Commander II

Requirements fulfilled.

Leadership growth confirmed.

-Army synchronization exceeds ninety-five percent-

-Advanced Summons have become Available-

Cassian felt his heartbeat quicken.

New Units Unlocked:

Royal Paladins

Templar Guardians

Arcane Spell Knights

Griffin Riders

Hospitalier Healers

Royal Engineers

Banner Champions

Doctor Victor whistled.

“Oh…”

Morrigan adjusted her glasses.

“That seemed to have made you considerably stronger.”

Cassian looked toward the summoning platform.

“May I try?”

Athena answered immediately.

Permission Granted.

He placed one hand upon the ancient summoning circle.

He closed his eyes to concentrate.

As he took in a deep breath he could feel the right Chant of Summoning he could use.

“I call upon all of those who wish to fight against darkness.”

The summoning circle started to rotate.

“I call upon those who will defend hope.”

Light exploded outward.

Runes shifted.

A brilliant figure slowly emerged.

Royal Paladin.

Nearly seven feet tall.

The gold and white  armor covered every inch of the warrior.

A flowing cape with the prince’s family crest hung across his broad shoulders.

The shield shimmered with holy runes.

Its sword glowed with a pale light.

The Paladin knelt immediately.

“My liege, you can call me Thomas.”

Cassian stared.

The Paladin alone surpassed every knight he currently possessed.

Athena continued scanning.

Combat capability significantly exceeds previous summon classifications.

Cassian smiled.

The summoning circle activated again only this time… A Spell Knight appeared this time

Unlike traditional mages, the armored knight carried both sword and staff.

Runes floated continuously around their worn pink armor.

Magical fire danced across their blade.

Cassian summoned the third summon.

This time a Griffin Rider.

Its massive green feathered companion landed gracefully beside the platform.

The creature folded its enormous wings while lowering itself respectfully before Cassian.

Doctor Victor burst into laughter.

“I knew it!”

Doctor Morrigan nodded proudly.

“You’ve crossed another threshold.”

Cassian slowly looked over his growing army.

For the first time…

He could imagine them standing beside Gene’s monsters instead of behind them.

Not equals.

Not yet.

But no longer hopelessly outmatched.

He clenched one fist.

“I won’t lose again.”

Not to pride.

Not to fear.

He looked toward the distant ceiling where, somewhere far above, the Nightmare Hotel continued preparing for the battles to come.

“If Gene is carrying the nightmares…”

He rested his hand upon the hilt of his sword.

“…then I’ll become the shield that stands beside them.”

Far away, hidden beyond the forests surrounding Mystic Blood Valley, the Hollow King Cult gathered its armies.

Neither side realized how little time remained before their next clash.

But beneath the Nightmare Hotel, a prince who had once sought glory for himself had quietly become something far more dangerous.

He was becoming a commander worthy of leading armies into the end of the world.
