Chapter 824: City Chapter 821 Gets Duped

Early morning. A massive fifty-meter ship sailed along the Whispering River. Ben stood at the bow of the ship, looking at the river waters ahead. He had departed from Sedona City many days ago. His destination this time was Mar City, all for the implementation of the military port project.

They should have set off much earlier, but they lacked the most crucial item: cement. They had waited a very long time for the cement to be fired.

The construction of the military port, as well as the troops stationed there, were all preparations for the future unification of the Western Lands. When the time came, using the military port as a fulcrum to radiate outward, the surrounding areas would truly become a controlled territory.

Another point was maintaining the security of the Whispering River, intimidating any passing water bandits. After all, the value the Whispering River could generate in the future was immeasurable.

The importance of the military port project was self-evident. But precisely because of this, Lucas had to be cautious. He struggled to find a suitable candidate to lead the team, until finally deciding to have Ben lead and supervise the project.

Ben originally managed internal affairs, which was relatively leisurely. But he was someone who couldn’t sit idle. So when Lucas found him and explained the situation, he agreed without a second thought.

"We should be approaching Mar City soon," Ben muttered softly to himself.

Sure enough, as the ship continued forward, a dilapidated port appeared in Ben’s vision.

This port was constructed entirely of wood, and some areas had already begun to rot, especially the parts submerged in the water. This was considered decent in the Western Lands, but compared to Sedona City, it was rather shabby.

"Just looking at this port tells you how rundown Mar City is," Ben said speechlessly.

The port had deteriorated to this state, yet Viscount Gini hadn’t spent money to rebuild it. It was no wonder Mar City couldn’t develop; there were reasons for it.

At this moment, on the edge of the port, Viscount Gini had already brought people to welcome Ben. After waiting for so long, the people from Sedona City had finally arrived.

"Wow, such a huge ship! This is my first time seeing one."

"This ship is from Sedona City. I’ve been to Sedona City before, it’s way more prosperous than our Mar City. If it weren’t for my father not wanting to leave, I’d want to move to Sedona City."

"The City Lord of Sedona City is truly a good person. It’s all because of him that we even have jobs..."

"Sedona City really is better. I heard the wages over there are very high..."

"..."

There were several hundred people at the port. These were all commoners of Mar City, currently gossiping about the arrival of Ben and the others.

They had all been hired by Gini to help build the port, earning a wage of about two copper coins per day. The purpose, of course, was to get the port built quickly. To do this, he had gritted his teeth and hired so many people all at once.

"Dock!"

"Drop anchor! Drop anchor!!"

"Lower the sails! Lower the sails!!"

The shipwrights on board shouted loudly. The anchor was thrown off the ship, sinking into the Whispering River, and the large ship came to a steady halt beside the port.

Creaaak...

Ben led the soldiers off the ship. The moment his foot stepped onto the wooden planks of the port, it emitted a sharp creak, making him deeply suspect whether the port beneath his feet might collapse at any moment.

As more and more people disembarked, the entire port began to sway slightly. Ben could only hasten his pace to step onto solid ground.

Behind him, workers hauled bags of cement wrapped in linen off the ship, stacking them on the shore. Soldiers stood guard, allowing no one to approach.

"Finally, the people from Sedona City are here," Gini hurriedly went up to greet him upon seeing Ben walk over.

"Preparing the supplies wasted a bit of time. Can we begin now?" Ben stated flatly.

He didn’t particularly like nobles like this who exploited commoners. If it weren’t for the fact that Mar City played an important role in the future unification of the Western Lands, he wouldn’t even have set foot here.

"Yes, we can start. They are all under your command." The balding Gini was momentarily taken aback, not expecting Ben to be so direct.

"Let’s commence the operation. First, bulldoze this old port. Tear the entire thing down," Ben ordered deeply, directing the commoners to begin their work.

"Mr. Ben, is this port going to be completely torn down?" Gini asked in shock, not expecting the entire port to be demolished.

"Yes. A brand new port will be built here. In the future, merchant ships traveling to and from Sedona City will all be able to dock here," Ben replied plainly.

"Wait, if this port is completely torn down, where will our ships dock?" Gini was dumbfounded, asking blankly.

"We might need some time. Isn’t there some empty space over there? You can temporarily build a port there to use for now," Ben pointed indifferently at a pile of rocks ahead.

"This..." Gini was flabbergasted. He was just about to say something, but was interrupted.

"Your port is too small. In the future, when we have many merchant ships, there won’t be nearly enough space for them to dock. Therefore, it must be entirely rebuilt. The area here is already small to begin with, so we have to use all of it," Ben said with a stern face.

"I..." Gini had grievances he couldn’t express. In the end, he had to build a new port all by himself.

Ben cast a cold glance at Gini and continued, "Let’s begin. Time is a bit tight. It must be completed before winter."

"..." Gini truly had no other choice now. What else could he do but build it? He absolutely lacked the power to resist. He had to build it whether he wanted to or not.

He turned his head, gave a few instructions to his subordinates, got directly into his carriage, and returned to his castle—taking the approach of ’out of sight, out of mind’.

His heart ached. Building even the simplest port cost a lot of gold coins. The money he had earned recently thanks to the new textile technology would, it seemed, mostly have to be invested into that new port.

Otherwise, during the period without a port, when other merchants came to Mar City to do business, if there was no port for them to dock at, they would likely sail straight to other cities. After all, they weren’t the only ones who possessed linen.

Ben didn’t pay attention to Gini. He had to maintain a strong stance while working outside, lest some people try to be slippery and lazy.

"Move all these logs away. Fill this entire area with stones..."

Under Ben’s direction, the engineering project proceeded in an orderly manner.
