Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord
Chapter 825 - 822 Contest
Chapter 825: Chapter 822 Contest
Inside the castle of Sedona City, Helen approached the study and knocked on the door.
Knock, knock, knock...
"My Lord, may I come in?" Helen called out, a look of confusion on her face.
"Come in," Lucas’s voice sounded from within.
Creaaak...
Pushing the door open, Helen walked in to find Lucas holding a piece of paper, discussing something with Annie and Mina.
"My Lord, what did you need me for?" Helen looked at the three of them curiously.
She had been holed up in her room reading a novel just moments ago—she still hadn’t finished reading City of Miracles—when a maid called her over, saying the Lord had something to discuss with her.
"Have a seat first," Lucas said, a smile playing on his lips.
"Is it about education?" Helen’s eyes blinked curiously. She naturally pulled up a chair and sat down. Usually, when Lucas sought her out, it pertained to educational matters. This thought helped her focus, and she looked at Lucas attentively.
"I plan to hold a recitation contest to improve the literary literacy of the commoners," Lucas smiled.
"Eh, eh, eh? A recitation contest? What is that?" Helen’s rabbit ears stood straight up in surprise.
"It’s about having the students..." Lucas briefly explained the rules of a recitation contest. Essentially, the children would pick a piece of literature themselves and read it aloud with emotion.
"That sounds very interesting. Will all the literate students participate?" Helen’s eyes lit up; she felt this was an excellent idea for a competition.
"Yes, any child who can read may participate. We will also set up scholarships. Whoever ranks in the top ten will receive a scholarship," Lucas nodded. He decided to use this method to boost the children’s enthusiasm for learning.
He had recently heard that quite a few students were losing focus on their studies. This would not do. For Sedona City’s long-term development, a large amount of talent was essential.
Moreover, while there were many entertainment options currently available in Sedona City, such as horse racing and boxing, those were only suitable for adults. There was a lack of activities suitable for children.
Therefore, Lucas planned to establish a recitation contest, holding it once every semester.
"How much is the scholarship?" Helen asked, frowning slightly.
"First place will receive one silver coin, second place is nine hundred copper coins, third place is eight hundred copper coins... and tenth place is one hundred copper coins," Lucas calmly listed the rewards for the top ten.
"Driven by coins, those kids will definitely work very hard," Mina laughed after hearing this. After all, one silver coin for first place was a substantial sum.
Currently, the vast majority of literate students in the school were the children of commoners; their families were not incredibly wealthy.
The average monthly salary in Sedona City right now was around one hundred copper coins, yet Lucas’s top reward was a full silver coin right off the bat.
"This is a great method," Annie also voiced her strong agreement.
"Helen, what do you think?" Lucas looked at the rabbit-eared girl.
"It’s a wonderful idea," Helen marveled, her eyes filled with admiration for Lucas.
She knew the students’ mindsets had been a bit restless lately. They all yearned to play outside, and some even wanted to become newspaper boys, especially the orphans.
"That’s good to hear. I’d like you to be the head judge and organize this recitation contest," Lucas smiled warmly, revealing the true purpose of calling her here.
"Eh?? Let me be the judge??" Helen froze for a moment, then hurriedly waved her hands. "No, no, I can’t do that, My Lord."
"Why not?" Lucas chuckled.
"I-I’m afraid I’ll mess it up..." Helen tugged at the corner of her clothes, lacking confidence. She had never organized a recitation contest before.
"If you’ve never tried, how do you know? You have to believe in yourself," Lucas said with a smile, continuing to soothe her. "Don’t worry, I’ll have the other teachers coordinate with you."
"We will help you too," Annie quickly raised her hand.
"Then I’ll try..." Helen looked at the group and gave a hesitant nod.
"Here is the procedure I wrote for the recitation contest. You can take it back and use it as a reference. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me," Lucas handed over the paper in his hand.
This was a plan he had adapted from Earth, tailored to fit the situation here.
Helen took the paper and skimmed through it. She realized that she only needed to follow the procedures listed above; it didn’t seem all that difficult.
Being a teacher herself, communicating with those students should make it quite easy to get them on board.
Not to mention, the top ten would receive coin rewards. This alone was enough to entice them to prepare thoroughly for the competition.
"Phew..." Helen took a deep breath and said, "My Lord, I will head back and start preparing then."
"Mhm. Go on," Lucas said softly.
Helen nodded. Her mind was already racing, thinking about how to organize this recitation contest perfectly.
She had made up her mind; she absolutely had to run this contest well. It sounded much more interesting than just being a teacher.
"It seems the silly rabbit is already fully invested," Annie found it amusing watching the rabbit-eared girl leave with a deeply thoughtful expression.
"Helen is always very proactive when it comes to things useful for learning," Mina stretched her back lazily.
"Annie..." Lucas turned to the fox-eared girl and said, "Allocate some supplies to Helen and help her build a stage."
"Understood," Annie replied softly.
