Chapter 103: The Gate Opens

Golden light erupted from the marking.

It wasn’t a soft glow. It was a sudden burst, bright and hot, like sunlight breaking through a crack. The entire golden circle flared to life under Vesper’s palm.

Vesper immediately pulled back, her hand jerking away by instinct. Her holy energy reacted badly, pushing against her.

But it was too late. The energy had already made contact, and the gate had accepted it.

The entire gate began vibrating. A low hum filled the chamber, shaking dust off the ceiling. The ancient symbols all over its surface began to glow brighter, one by one, like lights turning on in a city.

Sky’s Soul Core pulsed violently inside his chest. It wasn’t his own energy. Something was pulling on it, resonating with it.

His eyes widened as he felt his own soul energy being tugged forward.

"What’s happening? What did you do?" he asked, but he wasn’t angry. He was alarmed.

Chloe looked at her visor, which was flashing with readings she had never seen before. The numbers were climbing too fast to read.

"I don’t know! The gate activated its secondary circuit! Vesper’s energy completed one part of the sequence!"

The dark symbol suddenly illuminated. It had been completely black before, a dead void. Now it was waking up.

Sky’s shadow spread across the floor without his command. It stretched out long and thin, moving on its own, defying the light. It crawled toward the gate like a living thing.

He tried to pull it back, but his Soul Core throbbed again and the shadow kept moving. It wasn’t obeying him.

It crawled toward the gate, across the dusty stone, until it reached the dark circle.

The moment it touched the symbol—

BOOM!

A wave of dark energy exploded outward from the gate. It wasn’t hot like the golden light. It was cold, heavy, and suffocating.

Sky staggered backward, his knees almost buckling. He felt like all his energy had been sucked out for a second.

His Soul Clone immediately returned to him, slamming back into his body without being called. It had been forced back by the pulse.

Then the blue symbol activated on its own. It didn’t need anyone to touch it. The other two had triggered it.

Chloe’s visor flashed pure blue and she cried out, holding her head.

"Sky! It’s pulling from the Array! It’s using me as a conduit!"

"I know! I can feel it! It’s pulling everything!" he shouted back, trying to steady himself.

The three symbols began glowing simultaneously now, each with its own distinct power. They were in perfect balance.

Blue. The calm, steady light of soul analysis.

Gold. The warm, fierce light of radiant holy power.

Black. The deep, endless dark of whatever Sky carried.

The entire chamber trembled harder. Dust rained down in sheets. Small stones fell from the ceiling and shattered on the floor.

Ancient mechanisms began moving behind the gate. They were huge, heavy things that hadn’t moved in centuries. Stone groaned against stone, metal screamed against metal.

Something enormous was waking up behind that door. Something that had been sleeping for a very, very long time.

Sky raised his Blood Blade, igniting it fully. The red light was small compared to the gate’s glow, but it was his.

"Everyone, get ready! Whatever is behind this, it’s not going to be friendly!"

Vesper transformed her staff without a word. The wooden casing split apart with a sharp crack, unfolding and revealing the Holy Scepter Blade inside. Its light flared, resonating with the golden circle.

Chloe stepped backward and activated several mechanical devices around her belt. Small drones lifted off, shields hummed to life, and her scanning drones formed a perimeter.

The gate continued opening. It didn’t swing like a normal door. It split down the middle and slid apart, grinding heavily.

A narrow gap appeared first. Just a thin line of pure black.

Darkness waited beyond it. Not ordinary darkness like a night sky.

Something deeper. Something that seemed to absorb the light around it, that made their torches and blades look dimmer.

Then—

BOOM.

The gate opened completely, slamming into its final position with a shockwave that nearly knocked them off their feet.

A massive underground landscape appeared beyond it. It was so big Sky couldn’t comprehend it at first.

Ruined towers that stretched down instead of up. Ancient bridges made of the same black material as the gate, hanging in open space. Broken structures that looked like a city that had fallen into the abyss.

And far below, so far down that it was almost impossible to see...

Something enormous. Something that filled the bottom of that abyss. It was too large to be a building, too still to be alive.

Sky froze. His hand went numb around his blade.

His Soul Core suddenly throbbed with a painful, warning pulse. It felt like it was trying to hide inside his chest.

A strange pressure descended upon the chamber. It wasn’t weight. It was attention. Like a spotlight made of gravity.

Chloe’s visor began flashing uncontrollably, errors and warnings overlapping so fast they became unreadable.

"Sky..." she whispered, her voice shaking.

"What? What is it? What do you see?" he asked, keeping his eyes on the darkness below.

Her voice became unusually quiet, almost a breath.

"Something noticed us. The moment the gate opened, something down there looked up."

Sky’s eyes narrowed. He couldn’t see any eyes, but he felt it too. That pressure was a gaze.

"Something? What something? A beast?"

Chloe slowly looked toward the enormous darkness below, her whole body tense.

"Yes. No. I don’t know. It’s too big for the Array to classify. My visor can’t even get a size reading. It’s... it’s everything down there."

A deep vibration passed through the ground. It came up through their boots and into their bones.

Not an attack. Not yet. It didn’t feel hostile.

It sounded like breathing. Slow, heavy, and ancient.

Inhale. The wind in the abyss pulled inward, and the dust in the chamber swirled toward the gate.

The entire chamber trembled with that inhale.

Exhale. A warm, stale wind blew out from the darkness, carrying a smell of old stone and iron.

Dust fell from the ceiling in thick clouds.

Vesper tightened her grip around the Holy Scepter Blade until her knuckles went white. Her holy light flickered under the pressure.

Sky stared into the darkness, trying to see what was breathing down there. He saw nothing, only a shape that was too big to understand.

Then his Array displayed a single message. It wasn’t in the usual blue box. It was in red, glitching badly.

[UNKNOWN ENTITY DETECTED.]

The message flickered, as if the Array was struggling to even show it.

Then it changed. The text rewrote itself into something else.

[DO NOT DISTURB.]

Sky’s expression darkened. The Array never gave advice like that. It gave quests, stats, warnings about beasts. Never this.

"Nobody move," he said quietly, his voice barely audible. "Don’t make a sound. Don’t use any energy."

For once, neither Vesper nor Chloe argued. They didn’t even breathe loudly.

Because beneath the ruins, in the city that had fallen into the abyss...

Something was sleeping. Something so old the Array itself was afraid of it.

And they had just opened the door directly above it.
