Soulless Soul
Chapter 102: The Sealed Gate
Chapter 102: The Sealed Gate
The passage narrowed as they moved deeper.
The ancient stone walls seemed to close around them, forcing Sky, Vesper, and Chloe to walk almost shoulder to shoulder. The wide, clean hallway they had been in was gone. Now it was a tight throat of dark stone, barely wide enough for two people.
Sky’s Soul Clone remained several meters ahead, scouting the path. Its translucent form moved without sound, passing through the air like smoke. It checked every corner before they reached it.
No savage beasts. No hidden pits, no swinging blades.
No traps. No strange sounds.
Nothing. The passage was completely empty, and it had been empty for a very long time.
That should have been reassuring. In most parts of the Dungeon, empty meant safe.
It wasn’t. Not here. The silence was too perfect, and the air was too still. It felt like the place was holding its breath.
The deeper they went, the more the Array began behaving strangely. Sky could feel it like static behind his eyes. At first it was just a flicker.
Sky’s interface flickered every few seconds. His map would glitch, then come back. His inventory icon would vanish and reappear.
Sometimes his status disappeared completely, leaving a blank grey window. Sometimes unfamiliar symbols appeared where his normal notifications should have been, symbols that looked like the carvings on the walls.
Even his Energy bar briefly vanished before returning, making his heart skip. Without the Array telling him how much energy he had left, he felt strangely blind.
"Chloe," he said quietly. "Mine is glitching again."
"I know," she replied immediately. She didn’t even look up from her visor. Her own display was also flickering rapidly.
"The Array’s interference is increasing again. It’s worse than before. The field down here is actively jamming it."
Sky frowned, rolling his shoulders to shake off the uncomfortable feeling of his status vanishing.
"Can you still track the path? Can your visor still see ahead?"
"Yes," she said, tapping the side of it to stabilize the image. "The visor runs on its own Forge core, not just the Array. It’s struggling, but it’s still working."
A pause. Her voice became less certain.
"For now. If we go much deeper, even the Forge core might get scrambled."
They continued anyway. They had come too far to stop now because of some static. The clone kept moving ahead, and they followed its lead, their footsteps soft.
Then the passage suddenly ended. There was no turn, no door, just a flat wall of black that opened up into something massive.
Sky stepped forward and stopped. His eyes widened despite himself.
A gigantic gate towered before them. It was easily twenty meters high and almost as wide, built from a strange black material that didn’t resemble stone or metal. It didn’t reflect their lights properly. It seemed to absorb it.
Ancient symbols covered its surface from top to bottom, thousands of them, all glowing faintly with an inner light. They pulsed slowly, like they were sleeping.
Three enormous circular markings were carved into the center of the gate, arranged in a triangle. Each one was bigger than a person.
One glowed faintly blue, pulsing gently like a calm ocean. The second was completely dark, a void that seemed deeper than the rest of the gate. The third pulsed with a soft golden light, warm and steady.
Vesper stepped closer, her holy blade reacting slightly to the golden mark. She tilted her head up to take in the full height.
"What is this?" she whispered. "This isn’t Dungeon architecture."
Chloe stared at the gate, her visor scanning so fast the light from it was a blur. She looked amazed and terrified at the same time.
"I don’t know," she admitted. "I’ve never seen a structure like this in any record. Not even in the Pre-Collapse archives."
Sky glanced at her with a small, dry smile.
"That’s becoming your favorite answer. ’I don’t know.’"
Chloe gave him a look, not in the mood for jokes right now.
"Would you prefer I lie and make something up? Would that make you feel better?"
"Not really," Sky said, raising his hands slightly. "The honest answer is better. Even if it’s not helpful."
She moved toward the symbols, her curiosity overcoming her caution. She kept a safe distance at first, letting her visor do the work.
Her visor immediately projected several scanning lines across the gate. The blue lines touched the black surface.
The moment they touched the gate—
ERROR.
A loud error tone rang in her visor, and the projection shattered into red static. Chloe stumbled back a step.
Chloe’s expression changed from curiosity to intense focus.
"Interesting," she said, quickly resetting her visor.
"Again?" Sky asked. "Another error? Is the Array blocking you again?"
"No," she said, her voice becoming more excited. "Not this time. This isn’t Array interference. This is different."
She pointed at the three large circular symbols, her hand moving from one to the other.
"The gate isn’t responding to normal Array energy. It’s not even recognizing it. It’s looking for something else entirely."
Sky stepped closer, standing just behind her to look at what she was seeing.
"What does it need then? If not Array energy, what?"
Chloe studied the markings, switching her visor through different filters — soul view, thermal, radiant.
"I think..." she started, then hesitated to be sure.
She paused, letting the filters settle.
"There are three different energy signatures here. Three locks, basically. Each circle is a lock."
Vesper looked at the symbols, her holy light making the golden one shine brighter.
"Three? So we need three keys?"
"Yes," Chloe said. She pointed to the blue marking that was glowing faintly. "This one appears to respond to soul energy. Pure soul imprint. Like the energy Sky uses for his clone."
She pointed to the golden symbol that was pulsing warmly.
"This one is connected to radiant energy. Holy-type energy. Very close to what Vesper uses."
Then she pointed toward the dark symbol, the one that was completely black and lifeless. Her visor flickered violently when she focused on it.
"And this one..."
Her visor flickered again, struggling to analyze it.
"...is connected to something extremely similar to Sky’s energy, but not quite. It’s darker. More... corrupted. Or maybe just older."
Sky’s expression became serious. He looked at the dark circle and felt a strange pull from it, like it was familiar.
"My soul? You mean like my Blood Blade energy?"
"Something close to it," Chloe said. "Very close. But I can’t tell if it’s the same. It’s like looking at a reflection in dark water."
Vesper looked between them, then back at the gate. She understood now.
"So the gate requires all three. Soul, radiant, and whatever that third one is. All at once."
Chloe nodded slowly, zooming in on the center where the three circles met.
"That’s my current theory. Three different energies, three different people. It’s a trinity lock. You need all three to open it."
Sky stared at the enormous gate, at the three marks that just happened to match them perfectly. A coincidence that was too perfect.
"Convenient," he said quietly.
"What?" Chloe asked.
"The three of us happen to possess exactly those energy types," he said. "You have soul analysis, Vesper has radiant holy energy, and I have... whatever that third thing is. The exact three needed."
Chloe went silent. She had realized the same thing but hadn’t wanted to say it out loud.
Vesper’s expression hardened, her hand tightening on her staff.
"You think this was designed for us? That someone knew we would come?"
"I don’t know," Sky said honestly. He looked at the gate, at the massive, ancient thing that had been waiting here for centuries. "But I don’t believe in coincidences anymore. Not down here. Not in a place called Forest Fall."
For several seconds, none of them moved. The gate hummed softly, its blue and gold lights pulsing slowly. The dark circle remained dead.
Then Chloe reached toward the blue symbol. Her hand was shaking slightly, but she was determined.
"Wait," Sky said quickly.
He grabbed her wrist before she could touch it.
"Don’t. Don’t just touch it blindly."
She looked at him, surprised by how firm his grip was.
"What? Why? We need to test it."
"We don’t know what happens when we activate it," he said. "What if it drains you? What if it’s a trap? We should think first."
Chloe stared at the gate, at the glowing symbol that was calling to her visor.
"That’s true," she admitted. "It could be dangerous."
Vesper suddenly stepped forward before anyone could stop her. Her face was set, decisive.
"We didn’t come this far to stand here and stare at a door," she said. "If it wants radiant energy, I’ll give it radiant energy."
She placed her hand against the golden symbol without hesitation.
The moment she touched it—
BOOM!
