Chapter 104: The Sleeping Dungeon

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the three Awakened simply stood at the entrance of the enormous underground region like statues, listening to the slow, unnatural breathing coming from somewhere below. The sound was so deep it felt less like hearing and more like feeling it in their chests.

Inhale. The air grew thin and cold, pulling toward the abyss like the world itself was taking a breath.

The ground trembled faintly under their boots. Dust that had sat for years shivered and rolled toward the edge like it was given new life.

Exhale. A warm, damp wind brushed up from below, carrying the smell of wet stone and old iron.

Dust drifted from the ancient ceiling in a slow, silent rain. The golden light from the gate flickered against it.

Sky’s fingers tightened around the Blood Blade until his knuckles turned pale. He didn’t dare ignite it further. Any extra energy might be too much noise.

His Soul Clone hovered beside him, completely motionless. It was usually restless, always scanning. Now it was frozen in place.

Even it seemed reluctant to move deeper. It was pressed close to Sky’s side, as if it wanted to hide.

"What exactly are we looking at?" Vesper whispered. Her voice was barely louder than breathing.

Chloe didn’t answer immediately. She couldn’t. Her visor was covered with rapidly changing data, numbers that didn’t make sense.

Her visor was covered with rapidly changing data that kept spiking and crashing. Red warnings flashed and vanished before she could read them.

"Something enormous," she finally said, her voice tight. "Bigger than any reading I’ve ever gotten. Even bigger than a floor boss."

"How enormous?" Vesper asked, still staring down. "Are we talking building-sized? Mountain-sized?"

"I don’t know," Chloe said. She sounded frustrated, not with Vesper, but with her own equipment.

Sky glanced at her from the side, keeping his eyes mostly on the abyss.

"You’re doing that again," he said quietly. "The ’I don’t know’ thing."

"I genuinely don’t know this time," she shot back, but there was no heat in it. "I’m not being dramatic. My visor has no frame of reference for this."

She pointed downward, toward the center of the ruined city where the darkness was thickest. The gesture felt dangerous, like pointing at a sleeping beast.

"There’s too much interference. Whatever is down there is disrupting every sensor I have. It’s like trying to scan the sun with a flashlight."

Sky slowly looked over the edge of the ancient platform. He leaned forward just enough to see without stepping too close.

The underground area was enormous. It wasn’t a chamber. It was a world. The ceiling was so high above them it vanished into black.

Far below them, countless ruined structures stretched into the darkness. They went on for what looked like miles, disappearing into shadow.

Ancient towers, some broken in half, some still standing defiantly. Collapsed bridges that connected nothing to nothing. Massive stone buildings that were larger than anything in the upper labyrinth.

Some looked like temples, with tall pillars and empty altars. Others looked like fortifications, with thick walls and defensive towers pointed outward, as if they had been expecting an attack from the abyss itself.

It wasn’t a dungeon room. That phrase felt insulting to what he was seeing. A dungeon room had a purpose, a spawn point, loot.

It was a civilization. Or whatever remained of one after something had ended it.

And beneath it all, under all that stone and history and ruin...

Something was sleeping. He could feel its weight pressing up from below.

Sky’s Danger Sense suddenly activated. It wasn’t a gentle tingle this time.

A faint warning crawled across his vision, then turned solid red and urgent.

DANGER. The word pulsed in the corner of his eye.

He immediately stepped back from the edge, his heart hammering.

"Nobody goes down," he said sharply, his whisper now hard. "No matter what we see, we don’t go down there. Not today."

Vesper looked at him, her own holy sense tingling now that he had reacted. She trusted his senses more than her own.

"You sensed something? What is it? How close?"

"Yes," Sky said, scanning the darkness again. "It’s right under us. It’s... it’s looking, even while it’s asleep."

"How strong?" Vesper asked. Her hand was now glowing faintly around her blade, ready.

Sky shook his head slowly. He didn’t have a rank for what he was feeling. The Array couldn’t give him one.

"Strong enough that I don’t want to find out. Strong enough that if it wakes up, we don’t get to run. We just disappear."

That answer silenced her completely. Vesper had seen Sky face Monarch-class beasts and still crack a joke. He wasn’t joking now.

Chloe crouched near the edge and pointed her visor toward the darkness, angling it down toward the central ruins. She turned on every filter she had left.

"I’m detecting an enormous concentration of energy beneath the central ruins," she said. "It’s pooled down there like a lake. No, like an ocean."

"Is it moving?" Sky asked, still holding his position further back. "Is the energy moving like a living thing?"

"No," she said, watching the reading. The energy was completely still, but impossibly dense. "That’s the problem."

Sky frowned, not understanding. Still should be good.

"Explain. Why is still a problem? If it’s not moving, maybe it’s just a power source."

"It’s not moving because it’s asleep," Chloe said. Her voice dropped even lower. "Living things move, even when they rest. Hearts beat, energy flows. This thing’s energy is held in, contained."

The three of them stared into the darkness again, and now they could almost see the outline. A massive, rounded shape beneath the ruins, far larger than any of the towers.

Chloe continued, her throat suddenly dry. She had to force the words out.

"And judging from the energy fluctuations... from the way the whole chamber breathes with it..."

She swallowed.
