Chapter 1872: The Little Demons
Chapter 1872: The Little Demons
—–
“Not real True Demons—these are Demonic Beasts,” I explained. “Red is a Lesser Demonic Beast, the lowest of the low… Apparently, you need to offer a lot of souls and other things to summon Demonic Beasts. That guy back then could bring out thousands because he had an immense amount of Demonic Energy. The thing is, I don’t want to consume mortal souls, not even the souls of monsters… I feel bad when I’m asked to eat them, so in the end I only take a little nibble before letting the rest go. That’s why the Skill is still stuck at Level 1…”
“Sylphy, you’re too nice sometimes…” Aquarina sighed. “So you could have summoned a much stronger Demonic Beast or made Red much stronger if you just ate the souls… Well, I guess it’s nice of you not to do it despite the temptation of more power. It’s very much like you.”
She caressed my face and kissed me lovingly. “That’s why I love you—because you’re so kind, you even pity monsters,” Aquarina giggled, patting my head.
“I-I mean, taking tiny bites from souls still kind of works. I’m slowly accumulating proficiency… If only we could find someone I hated enough that devouring their soul wouldn’t make me hesitate…” I wondered aloud.
“Haha, that’s a bit too much,” she said with a giggle. “Don’t overthink it. You already have plenty of powers, right? It’s not like this Demon Authority is the only thing you’ve got going.”
“Oh yeah, you’re not wrong,” I nodded. “I’m a Demigoddess as well! But imagine the power I could gain if I balanced Divine and Demonic Power. It’s interesting to think about what could be born from that, don’t you think?”
“I guess so, but you should calm down and take your time,” Aquarina smiled, kissing my forehead. “You’re doing really well already… And this little guy is adorable—wait, little guys? Are they all the same being?”
“Yes, they are,” I said. “It’s strange, but Red can divide himself… I don’t know why. I’ve tried summoning another Demonic Beast, but I can’t. It seems he’s the only one I can summon. And because he doesn’t feed on souls, he shouldn’t be able to evolve or continue growing, which is required for Demonic Beasts or True Demons to develop.”
“But he’s clearly gotten bigger, hasn’t he?” Aquarina asked. “How does that even work then?”
“I’m not too sure, but I think it has to do with the System,” I said. “Normally, he wouldn’t evolve or grow without consuming souls, but the System helps him grow regardless, prompting the evolution of a creature that shouldn’t even exist—the first Demonic Beast to evolve without devouring souls.”
“Doesn’t he feel hungry?” Aquarina asked, a little worried.
“Not really. They have a huge appetite and happily devour dozens of monster carcasses if left unchecked,” I explained with a soft giggle. “But overall, he’s doing fine.”
“Guuuhhh… Aquagina?” Violet was also by my side, slowly moving toward Aquarina. She was my living cauldron, after all, so Aquarina knew her well.
“Oooh, right, Violet! Your cauldron,” Aquarina giggled. “I almost forgot about her… She can speak now?!”
“Yeah, she learned to speak some time ago. She’s still a little shy,” I giggled, patting her head. “Ah, right…! You two come out to greet Aquarina as well!”
I quickly took out Scarlet, my blade, and Sapphire, my shield, from my Soulscape, showing them to Aquarina. They had evolved and grown much stronger after their last evolution.
“Remember them?” I asked. “My living sword and shield!”
“Oooh? Is this Aquarina? Well, well, long time no see, girl!” Scarlet said, floating in midair. “Quite a lot has happened here since you’ve been gone.”
“Hello Aquarina, nice to see you again,” Sapphire said. “I’m glad you’re back. Now our master won’t be sad all the time.”
“A-Ahahah… right, you’ve got a living sword and shield… I had forgotten about all this, my bad,” Aquarina laughed, amused. “It’s really amazing, and they seem so strong too. It’s cool they can talk so well. Hello, girls… or boys.”
“Scarlet reverted to being a Great Sword rather than a Katana,” I explained. “I prefer her as a Great Sword, but she can switch back to a thinner Katana-like form, giving me a lot of freedom in combat. And Sapphire has become even bigger and heavier, with something like a speargun attached to her, so she can fight as well. Pretty awesome, right?”
“It is… Makes me want my own talking weapons,” Aquarina said. “But I’m happy with what I have, so don’t worry… Anyway, let me show you all my spirits and familiars again! They’ve evolved recently.”
Aquarina quickly revealed Undine and Leviathan. They had indeed become larger and more defined in appearance after their evolutions, less “ethereal” and much more “physical.” They had learned a better way to fully materialize.
“Hello Sylphy! Long time no see,” Undine said with a cute smile, her aura of water flowing through the air. “It seems you’ve grown a little, huh? I recall you were smaller.”
“E-Eh? Really? I barely noticed…” I muttered. “But that’s reassuring! Thanks! I really want to get taller… I’m glad to know I’m growing every year!”
“I prefer you small so I can grab you easily, heheh,” Aquarina giggled, lifting me up and carrying me in her arms. “Like this~”
“Hahah! W-Wait, don’t do this in front of everyone…!” I laughed, embarrassed.
“Raaaarrrr!” Leviathan roared cutely, rushing toward me and licking my face.
“Leviathan! You look so much like your dad now!” I said. “You’ve really grown bigger and stronger! I bet you’ve helped Aquarina a lot with Undine, right?”
“Ryyaar!” he nodded, rubbing his big snout against my face.
“Aaaand these two new ones,” I said, glancing at them while Aquarina still held me tightly. “Who are they?”
“The first one—don’t you recognize it?” Aquarina asked.
The two spirits floated towards us, one of them resembled the cub of a lion, with red and golden fur and sharp black claws, the other was… a floating egg with a crack where we were able to see two eyes glancing from across. The egg had scales covering its body which were black and dark blue color.
