Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 58: Unforgiven Past, Unbroken Bond
The heavy thrum of the Heart echoed through the cavern, but for a fraction of a second, the blinding golden light fractured into a nightmare Mei knew all too well.
A memory from her first life flashed across her vision, stark and unforgiving. She remembered the freezing rain slicking the alleyway pavement, the stench of blood on her hands, and the agonizing weight of a poisoned blade buried between her ribs. She remembered dying alone on that cold stone floor—betrayed by Ethan and Fei, the very teammates from Team Shadow she had trusted with her life. They had left her to rot in the dark, treating her like discarded trash because an assassin was never meant to have a future.
Trust is a liability, the old voice whispered in her head. Everyone leaves. Everyone sells you out.
Mei blinked, bringing the present back into sharp focus just as one of the Devourer’s massive obsidian limbs came crashing down toward her flank.
She opened her mouth to dodge alone—her instincts screaming at her to treat everyone around her as collateral—when a blinding flare of light cut through the shadows.
Joshua stepped directly into the strike's path, his gauntlets flaring to life as he slammed his energy shield upward. The impact rattled the stone beneath their feet, sending a shockwave that nearly threw Mei off balance, but Joshua didn't yield an inch. His teeth were grit, sweat dripping down his jaw, but his eyes were fixed on the monster above them.
"I've got your back, Mei!" Joshua grunted, his voice steady despite the bone-crushing pressure. "Go!"
Mei hesitated for a single microsecond, her hand instinctively tightening on Fang's hilt. In her first life, no one had ever stood in front of a blade for her. Ethan and Fei had traded her loyalty for power, but Team Blaze was standing their ground.
Above them, three dark tethers whipped around to flank Joshua's exposed side. Before Mei could even call out a warning, Lucien materialized from the shadows behind the beast, his twin daggers severing the tethers mid-air with precise, dark strikes.
"Don't get distracted, Boss," Lucien called out with a shadowy smirk, melting back into the darkness before the Devourer could counter. "We aren't letting you do all the heavy lifting today."
Further back, Shane roared, driving his hammer into the ground to create a protective wall of magma that kept Aelia’s stray white mana rings from clipping Elias while he frantically decoded the Heart's core.
Mei looked at the blood on Joshua’s armor, the sweat on Shane’s brow, and the quiet resolve in Lucien’s shadow. They weren't Ethan and Fei. They weren't using her as a shield or waiting for a chance to drive a dagger into her spine.
The cold, tight knot in Mei’s chest—the one she had carried through every time loop and every bloody rebirth—finally began to loosen. She wasn't the solitary, disposable assassin bleeding out in a dark alley anymore.
She turned back toward Aelia and the Devourer, her posture shifting as she dropped into a low, fluid stance.
"Shane! Drive the monster toward the center platform!" Mei commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos with absolute authority. "Joshua, hold the front line with me! We take them together!"
Team Blaze moved as one, answering her call without a moment of hesitation. Mei surged forward, no longer just fighting to survive, but fighting alongside people she was finally learning to trust.
