Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 57: Two Souls, One Origin
The air inside the Vault of Records didn't smell like blood or ozone. It smelled like paper rot, static electricity, and cold mercury.
Mei stood before the central conduit, her hand resting on the hilt of Fang. Around her, Team Blaze held a tight defensive perimeter—Shane's hammer resting on the stone floor, Joshua's gauntlets crackling with low energy, and Lucien melting into the surrounding shadows.
In the center of the chamber, Elias paced back and forth, his fingers flying across the glowing interfaces floating above his ledger.
"It doesn't make sense," Elias muttered, his voice trembling. "The records aren't just overlapping—they're actively consuming each other."
"Explain," Mei said, her voice flat and even. "Who is Isadora, and how does Aelia tie into her?"
Elias tapped a central rune, forcing a holographic archive to project into the center of the hall. A towering silhouette materialized—a woman surrounded by seven floating rings of pure white mana, holding the blue-and-silver blueprint of the original world.
"Isadora wasn't a survivor," Elias whispered. "She was the Prime Architect. Before the first Gate opened, before the system existed, Isadora built the world-engine to protect humanity from the Void. But when the first invasion happened, her body was destroyed."
The projection fractured, splitting into two distinct streams of light.
"To save her consciousness, the world-engine shattered her soul into thousands of derived shards across infinite timelines," Elias continued, pointing at the first stream, which bloomed into images of Aelia. "Aelia was the First Derived Soul—the pristine, uncorrupted copy left behind to oversee the system. She is the System Administrator, the loyal daughter of the Architect's design who exists solely to enforce the Prime Mandate."
"And what is the Prime Mandate?" Shane grunted, leaning his weight onto his hammer.
"Reconstruction," Elias said softly. "Aelia's entire purpose is to harvest every single derived shard, collapse the alternate timelines, and merge them back together to resurrect Isadora in her original form."
Mei's eyes narrowed as she looked at the second stream of light—a dark, chaotic thread pulsing with black-and-silver mana. "And what am I?"
"You're the anomaly," Elias said. "You were meant to be just another shard to be harvested. But through the time loops and your own sheer will, you broke the script. You developed your own identity, your own soul. You aren't just a piece of Isadora anymore, Mei—you became your own person. And to Aelia, a piece that refuses to merge is a virus."
Before anyone could speak, a low, rhythmic vibration passed through the stone deckplates beneath their boots.
A third projection flickered to life in the ledger—a terrifying, six-limbed entity forged of black crystal and writhing temporal tethers, kneeling before a golden core.
"Then where does the First Devourer fit into this?" Joshua asked, stepping forward with his shield raised. "Why did it call her 'Mother'?"
"Because the First Devourer isn't a monster from the Void," Elias said, his face draining of all color. "It was Isadora's very first attempt to build a biological container for her fractured soul—a prototype created before the rebirth loop was finalized. It's the physical corpse of the first failed timeline, corrupted by centuries of trapped temporal energy."
Mei stared at the projection of the Devourer. The pieces clicked together with cold, mathematical precision.
"It's not trying to kill us," Mei realized, her thumb flicking the guard of Fang. "It's drawn to the Heart because it wants to return home—just like Aelia wants to merge us, and just like the system wants to delete us."
"Aelia commands the code," Elias warned. "The Devourer controls the raw, physical corruption of the dead timelines. And you sit right in the middle—the only soul strong enough to destroy the engine or take control of it."
Mei turned away from the hologram, looking toward the dark archway leading deeper into the subterranean vault where the Heart hummed.
"Aelia wants a master," Mei said coldly. "The Devourer wants a womb. The system wants a reset."
She drew Fang, the black blade drinking in the chamber's pale light.
"They're all getting a grave."
