Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 47: Ghost in the Flesh
The third impact didn't just shake the stairwell—it shattered the masonry.
Mei stopped halfway up, her boots sliding in a spray of stone dust as the shockwave rattled her teeth. Three heavy concussions, a heartbeat of dead silence, then three more. Whatever was trapped below wasn't clawing blindly at the bedrock. It was calculating, rhythmically testing the structural integrity of the dungeon.
"It knows we're here," Joshua said, his grip tightening on his hilt.
"It's mapping the layout," Mei hissed.
Another tremor hit, violent enough to buckle her knees. Mei instinctively slammed her right hand against the handrail to catch herself.
Her fingers didn't close.
The realization struck harder and colder than the physical agony. The corruption from the leviathan's core had metastasized, black veins crawling past her wrist and plunging beneath her sleeve. A deep, necrotic numbness had completely deadened her hand. She tried to flex her fingers again.
Nothing.
Her dagger nearly slipped from her paralyzed grip.
Joshua caught the movement instantly. "Mei, your hand."
"I know." She snatched the blade with her left hand, shoved it into her belt, and forced herself upward.
Two steps later, her right leg betrayed her, buckling under a wave of shooting nerve-fire. Joshua lunged, grabbing her elbow before she hit the stone.
Mei violently wrenched her arm away. "Don't."
"You almost went over the edge."
"I said I'm fine."
"You're bleeding out from the inside, Mei!"
Another deafening impact answered him, splitting the staircase down the middle. Above them, the main span had pancaked into rubble, but a jagged, narrow maintenance channel gaped along the eastern wall.
"We take the channel," Mei choked out, her breath hitching.
Shane glanced back at the vertical climb, his massive shoulders tensing. "Can you make it?"
Mei slammed her injured arm against the stone wall to test it. Pain flared white-hot from her wrist straight to her collarbone, dropping her vision into a dizzying spin.
"No," she whispered. She pointed toward the gap. "You go first. I'll follow."
Shane didn't waste a second, driving his heavy frame into the rubble and tearing chunks of concrete away. The next section demanded an immediate climb over a fractured, hanging steel beam. Mei reached for it automatically with her right hand—only to stare blankly at her useless fingers.
Cursing under her breath, she lunged with her left hand instead, hauling her entire weight upward. The sudden, violent strain ripped through her damaged shoulder, nearly tearing her grip loose.
Joshua's hand clamped onto the back of her tactical jacket, hoisting her over the lip. "Easy."
"Don't slow the team," she wheezed.
"I'd rather slow down than watch you drop into the abyss."
Mei locked eyes with him. "You might not have a choice."
That shut him up.
Shane broke through into the main maintenance tube. Frigid, toxic air screamed through the pipe, smelling of old ozone and stagnant blood. Mei dropped into a crouch, her eyes darting across the condensation-slick floor.
Pressure plates.
Her vision blurred, tunneling into blackness. She blinked violently until the dust-choked tunnel snapped back into focus. Three triggers were buried inches beneath the grime.
"Hug the left wall," she ordered.
Lucien narrowed his eyes. "You sure?"
Mei nodded, but her dead hand suddenly spasmed, the trapped nerves sending a convulsing jolt through her chest that forced her to slam her shoulder into the concrete to stay upright. Lucien caught the motion, his jaw tightening into a hard line, but he didn't argue.
They moved as a lethal unit. Mei led from the front despite her crippled arm, using her left hand to sweep for triggers and her burning eyes to read the structural traps. Joshua shadowed her flank, ready to catch her weight, while Shane anchored the rear and Lucien's crimson chains hissed against the walls to catch falling debris.
Midway through, the dungeon groaned. A massive support beam tore loose directly above Mei's head.
She saw it falling, but her right arm hung useless—she couldn't raise the block in time.
Joshua slammed into her side, tackling her hard into the dirt just as the iron-reinforced concrete crashed down right where she had been standing.
Mei hit the ground on her injured shoulder, the impact driving every ounce of air from her lungs. For three agonizing seconds, she couldn't draw a breath.
Joshua was there instantly, hauling her to her feet. "I've got you."
Mei shoved him back, her right arm dangling uselessly at her side like dead weight. The equation had just changed permanently. She couldn't climb, she couldn't parry, and she couldn't swing a blade with her dominant side. Every single movement from here on out was a calculated risk.
"Change formation," she rasped, wiping blood from her lip. "Shane leads—clear everything physical. Lucien backs him, holding the collapsing supports. Joshua, stay glued to my left."
"And you?" Joshua demanded.
Mei gripped her dagger hard enough in her left hand to draw blood. "I navigate. Move."
Twenty feet ahead, the floor simply vanished into a twenty-foot chasm of black air. Shane slammed his tower shield into the remaining lip, driving his aura into the stone to form a makeshift bridge.
Mei approached the edge last. Normally, she would have cleared the gap in a single bound. With one arm dead, a miscalculation meant a freefall into the dark.
She scanned the opposite wall, spotting a thick maintenance cable running parallel to the ledge.
"Lucien. Chain."
In a heartbeat, a crimson hex-chain whipped across the gap, wrapping tightly around the cable. Mei looped the chain securely around her left forearm.
"On three," she breathed.
Joshua grabbed her vest, his voice dropping into a snarl. "You aren't crossing first."
"If this ledge gives way, I'd rather it take me than the whole line."
She launched herself off the crumbling concrete.
Her boots slammed into the opposite wall just as the stone shattered beneath her. She swung outward, catching her entire body weight on her left arm and the makeshift chain. The sudden, brutal strain ripped straight through her injured shoulder joint.
Mei bit down so hard her teeth clicked, swallowing a scream that threatened to tear her throat apart. She hauled herself over the edge with a violent heave.
"Safe!"
Shane crossed in a blur of gold, followed swiftly by Joshua. Lucien reeled his chain in last, sprinting across just as the entire pathway behind them collapsed into dust.
Mei pressed her back against the wet tunnel wall, her chest heaving in shallow, ragged gasps.
Joshua dropped into a crouch beside her, his face carved from stone. "You're failing fast."
"I know."
"You can't hide this anymore, Mei."
She looked down at her right hand. She curled her fingers in her mind.
Nothing happened.
The terror of it was worse than the pain. Then, the system text tore across her vision in blinding, violet light:
LEVIATHAN GUARDIAN — DESTROYED
VAULT ACCESS — COMPROMISED
DUNGEON STRUCTURAL STABILITY — 31%
WARNING: LOWER LEVELS COLLAPSING
A concussive shockwave slammed upward from the abyss, so violent it knocked them all to their knees. Something colossal struck the sealed vault doors below—once, twice, with the force of a battering ram.
The stone beneath them cracked open like dry bone.
Mei forced herself up, ignoring the agony tearing through her shoulder. "The guardian wasn't keeping things out."
Joshua stared down into the howling dark. "It was keeping the ceiling from falling."
"No," Mei whispered as another massive impact rattled their teeth. "It was acting as a cork."
A jagged fissure split the floor directly beneath her boots.
"Up! Now!"
She bolted, but her speed was gone. She was forced to pick slower, one-handed climbs, dodging falling debris purely on instinct while the others cleared the crushing blocks in front of her. Every second dragged. Every breath burned.
At the end of the corridor, the path terminated at a vertical shaft stretching up into absolute blackness. A rusted iron ladder was bolted to the slick stone wall.
Joshua stepped forward, blocking her path. "I'll go first."
"No—"
"Mei, you can't even grip—"
"You're carrying the shield, Joshua! I'll climb with my left!"
She didn't wait for permission. She grabbed the first rung with her left hand, hauling her weight upward while her dead right arm swung uselessly against her ribs. Halfway up, her left palm slipped on the slick iron, sweat and blood mixing on the rung. She caught herself by a single, desperate set of fingers, her muscles screaming in protest.
Below her, Joshua moved up instantly, crowding her heels. "Don't let go."
"Wasn't planning on it," she gasped through clenched teeth.
She dragged herself over the top ledge and collapsed onto the grating, immediately turning to haul the others up. Only when Shane and Lucien tumbled onto the platform did Mei allow her back to hit the wall.
Her right arm had gone completely, terrifyingly cold.
Then, beneath the shredded skin of her wrist, the violet runes flared to blinding life.
The Eternal Seal symbol burned outward, spider-webbing across her palm. A wave of paralytic agony surged through her nervous system, locking her jaw.
Joshua dropped beside her, terror cutting through his hardened expression. "Mei—"
"I'm... still here," she choked out.
From the vertical shaft below, a voice echoed upward—not mechanical, but ancient, wet, and scraping like metal dragging across stone.
"Eternal Seal candidate confirmed."
The entire team froze, weapons instantly raised.
"Previous termination recorded."
Mei stared in horror at her right hand. The glowing purple runes pulsed in time with her racing heart.
"Previous termination: Failed."
Without warning, her paralyzed right hand violently snapped shut into a tight fist.
Mei stared down at her own fingers. She hadn't issued the command. Her brain hadn't sent the signal.
Something else was pulling the strings.
Her eyes snapped up toward the shaft, dark and feral. The infection wasn't just killing her. The thing buried beneath the city had taken root in her flesh—and it was using her own body to finish what it started.
