Chapter 46: The Price of Breaking the Seal

The explosion had barely faded when the chamber began to collapse.

Mei pushed herself upright, her knees shaking as her boots splashed into the rising water. She immediately tested her right hand, her throat tight. The corruption from the leviathan's core had spread beneath her skin, dark, ink-like veins reaching up toward her shoulder and throbbing with a sickening, cold pulse. Her fingers barely responded, numb and heavy.

Joshua reached her in two frantic strides, blood running down his temple from a deep cut across his forehead. His greatshield was split down the middle, damaged almost beyond use.

"Can you move?" his voice was raw, laced with a fear he couldn't quite mask.

"Yes."

"Fight?"

Mei looked down at her black-stained arm, squeezing her fist to force sensation back into her palm. "Not properly."

A violent crack split the vaulted ceiling above them.

A massive slab of stone crashed into the flooded chamber, sending a torrent of freezing water splashing across their boots. Mei didn't flinch. She looked past the falling debris, her sharp assassin gaze scanning the structural lines of the corridor ahead.

The main passage was already narrowing, choked by falling masonry. But her eyes caught a subtle shift in the architecture.

The eastern wall had a secondary maintenance channel running behind it—narrow, steel-reinforced, and largely hidden. More importantly, the floor beneath it wasn't buckling.

"We're not going back," Mei said, her voice dropping into an icy, steady rhythm that instantly cut through the panic.

Shane wiped blood from his eye, stepping up beside her and looking toward the collapsed vault. "That was my thought."

"No. We're taking the maintenance channel." She pointed toward a section of cracked wall half-hidden beneath broken stone. "Shane, clear it. Joshua, keep your barrier around the group, but don't waste energy protecting the falling rubble. Lucien, stay behind us and pull anything loose away from the passage with your hex-chains."

The three men moved without a moment's hesitation.

Shane drove his damaged tower shield into the weakened wall with a guttural growl. The stone fractured and caved inward, revealing a dusty, narrow service tunnel beyond it.

Mei crouched at the entrance, the air reeking of old rust and damp copper. She studied the dust patterns on the floor.

"Don't step on the center plates."

Joshua frowned, his fingers tightening on his hilt. "Traps?"

"Pressure triggers. Old ones," Mei said. She picked up a heavy chunk of rubble with her good left hand and tossed it onto the nearest floor tile.

CLACK-CRUNCH.

A row of rusted iron spikes punched violently through the stone, missing her boots by inches before retracting with a hiss.

Shane stared at the wicked steel points, swallowing hard. "Good catch."

"Keep to the left wall. The supports are newer there." Mei took a deep breath, pushing past the burning ache in her shoulder, and entered first.

The tunnel violently shook as another section of the dungeon collapsed behind them, the deafening roar of falling stone echoing down the shaft. Joshua fell in behind her, his weakened golden Aegis field flickering around the squad like a shield of warm starlight, while Shane brought up the rear after making sure Lucien was through.

They had gone less than fifty feet when Mei abruptly halted, holding out a hand.

A hairline crack was crawling across the ceiling like a spiderweb.

She glanced at the floor, then the stress lines in the walls, calculating the physics in a heartbeat. "Three seconds."

Joshua understood instantly. "Everyone move!"

They sprinted forward as the ceiling gave way behind them in a roar of dust and stone. Lucien swung his arm, his crimson hex-chains lashing out to drag a falling support beam sideways, preventing it from sealing their only escape route.

Mei reached the next junction, her lungs burning, and immediately rejected the wider, more inviting passage.

"Not that way."

Shane caught up, his heavy armor clanking as he breathed heavily. "Why? That main hall goes straight up!"

"Airflow," Mei snapped. She pointed toward the narrow, dark left tunnel. "Dead air in the wide corridor. Something's blocking it farther ahead—we'll get trapped in a pocket. This one still has a draft."

Another bone-rattling tremor shook the dungeon bedrock.

Mei didn't hesitate. "Left."

They surged into the narrow passage, the tight space pressing in on them until the tunnel opened into a reinforced, spiral stairwell carved into solid granite.

For the first time since the core detonated, Mei allowed herself a single, ragged breath.

Then, crimson system text ignited in the air before them:

LEVIATHAN GUARDIAN — DESTROYED

VAULT ACCESS — COMPROMISED

DUNGEON STRUCTURAL STABILITY — 31%

WARNING: LOWER LEVELS COLLAPSING

Joshua stared at the floating interface, his chest heaving. "The guardian was part of the containment system."

Mei nodded, her jaw set tight. "We broke the prison."

THUMP.

A deep, sickening impact vibrated up through the stone from far below.

The stairwell trembled.

THUMP.

Something colossal was striking the collapsed vault from beneath the rubble.

Shane tightened his grip on his ruined shield until his knuckles turned white. "How long until whatever that is gets through?"

"I don't know," Mei said softly.

She turned toward the stairs, looking up into the shadows.

"But I know where we don't want to be when it does." She pointed upward. "Keep moving. No stopping unless I call it."

Joshua glanced down at her black-veined, corrupted arm, concern etched deep into his face. "You're leading?"

Mei met his eyes, her gaze burning with an cold, absolute determination that silenced every doubt.

"I know this dungeon better than any of you," she said, stepping onto the first riser. "And right now, getting Team Blaze out alive is my job."

No one argued.

They fell into formation beside her, ascending into the dark as the mountain groaned and shook beneath their boots. Behind them, far down in the subterranean abyss, something hit the collapsed vault a third time.

This time, the solid stone shattered.
