Chapter 48: Echoes of the Core

The creature staggered, the rhythm of its violent biology finally fracturing. Mei caught the shift instantly. The ragged gashes Shane had ripped across its skull had stopped knitting themselves together, the regenerative tissue dying off. Instead, the ambient violet aura was violently funneling downward, sucked toward a hairline fracture beneath its jaw—the exact blind spot where her blade had bitten into it earlier.

Its core was pooled right there.

"Hold it," Mei said, her voice cutting through the ringing in her ears.

Shane spared a glance at the towering mass. "For how long?"

"Ten seconds."

A ruthless grin broke across his blood-spattered face. "That's all?"

"It's all I need."

Shane launched forward, his heavy hammer connecting with the creature's skull in a bone-shattering impact that drove it backward. When a massive, scythe-like claw whipped out toward his flank, Joshua's chain snapped through the air, wrapping the limb and wrenching it wide. Lucien capitalized on the opening instantly, his twin blades tearing through the exposed shoulder joint and dropping the beast onto one knee.

Mei crossed the broken flagstones before the creature could pivot. She slid low beneath a wild, sweeping arc of its arm, scrambled up its downed forearm, and drove upward toward its neck as the monster thrashed violently beneath her. Behind her, a missed swipe pulverized the masonry, showering the chamber in jagged stone shrapnel.

Violet energy was boiling inside the creature's throat, casting a sickly luminescence over the vault.

Mei locked her fingers around the hilt of her dagger. Her injured hand throbbed mercilessly, fire streaking up her forearm with every micro-movement, but she refused to slow her climb. In her past life, she had been treated as disposable currency—a pawn whose death was always calculated as an acceptable loss by someone else. She would never surrender that choice again.

The creature reared back, snapping its jaws open to unleash a concentrated torrent of violet devastation.

Mei dove beneath the searing discharge, lunging upward to bury her dagger deep into the fracture beneath its jaw. The blade punched through the armored hide and bit hard into the dense core. The beast seized and convulsed, but Mei braced her weight against its skull, wrenching the weapon sideways until a fracture split the core.

A violent shockwave of violet light erupted from the wound, racing across the sprawling frame. The creature let out a shriek that rattled the vault's foundation as Mei threw her entire body weight behind the blade, forcing it past the final resistance until the core shattered completely.

"Break."

The core collapsed inward, and the enormous beast folded on itself, dissolving into a blinding squall of violet fragments. The crushing atmospheric pressure that had choked the chamber vanished instantly, leaving behind only swirling dust and the acrid tang of scorched stone.

Mei caught her weight on one knee, chest heaving. Shane lowered his heavy hammer, Joshua let his chain slacken, and Lucien watched the last remnants of the monster fade into the floorboards.

"It's dead," Joshua muttered.

Mei stared at the empty space where the terror had stood a moment before.

Her system flickered into view.

[Proxy destroyed.]

A secondary window popped beneath it.

[Core eliminated.]

Then the notification shifted, updating with cold precision.

[Primary entity remains active.]

Mei's jaw tightened.

"So that wasn't the monster."

Before anyone could voice a warning, the ground beneath them shivered. The vibration originated deep beneath the foundations of the vault, violent enough to rattle dust loose from the vaulted ceiling overhead. The scattered violet fragments left behind by the dead beast suddenly shifted, drifting toward the mouth of the dark descending tunnel and vanishing into the gloom, pulled downward by an invisible current.

Shane watched them disappear. "It's harvesting the remains."

"Which means it knows we're here," Lucien added, his blades already flicking back into a ready grip.

The tremor intensified, accompanied by a low, rhythmic thumping that reverberated through the bedrock.

A heartbeat.

Mei looked back at the rest of Team Blaze. They were battered, bleeding, and running on fumes, but they were standing shoulder to shoulder. That was what counted. In her first life, survival meant constantly reacting to the ruthless designs of other people. Enemies dictated the terms of every engagement, superiors decided who would be fed to the wolves, and Mei had spent years running from a future she had no power to shape.

That life had ended on a pool of cold blood.

This one was entirely different.

"We go down."

Shane stepped up beside her instantly, with Joshua and Lucien flanking them as the rest of Team Blaze locked in behind. They plunged into the descending passage together, leaving the ruined vault behind.

The air grew progressively bitter and freezing the deeper they descended, swallowing the distant violet haze until absolute darkness closed in around them.

Then the heartbeat returned.

The stone floor shuddered violently beneath their boots as another heavy pulse rolled through the corridor. Mei froze as she realized the sound wasn't coming from the depths ahead.

It was directly beneath them.

The tunnel walls groaned as something colossal shifted in the abyss below.

Her system flickered once more.

[Warning: Primary entity has awakened.]

Mei stared at the hovering text while the ground beneath her feet pulsed.

The horror they had just slain had been nothing more than a decoy.

The true threat was waiting in the dark below.

For years, Mei had survived by staying one step ahead of whatever stalked her. This time, she had finally cornered the thing she needed to hunt.

She tightened her grip on her dagger's hilt, staring down into the black abyss.

"Good."

A cold, sharp smile touched her lips.

"Now we know where to start."
