Chapter 44: Heart of the Core

The crater was a nightmare of molten steel and superheated glass where a city park had been.

Team Blaze crested the rim, and the heat hit them like a physical blow, instantly boiling the rain off their armor. At the center hovered an obsidian tear in reality, vomiting a suffocating purple mist that hissed against the asphalt. Guarding it stood a nine-foot monstrosity carved from jagged glass and bleeding starlight, its faceless head dominated by a weeping vertical slit of blinding white energy.

"That's an anchor!" Adrian's voice cracked over the comms, spiked with sheer panic. "If it stabilizes, the whole district—"

"It won't," Mei snarled.

She vaulted off a slab of fractured concrete, diving straight into the abyss of the crater. The entity snapped its head toward her, unleashing a concussive shockwave of pure telekinetic force.

The blast hit Joshua mid-stride, driving him to his knees and tearing a bloody cough from his throat. "Hold the line!" he roared, slamming his blade into the dirt to anchor himself.

Shane threw his weight beside him, slamming a golden barrier into place just as a secondary wall of pressure shattered the air around them. Through the blinding wall of kinetic force, Lucien materialized, his fingers dripping with crimson runes. With a feral snarl, he hurled the volatile symbols straight into the entity's chest.

BOOM.

The detonation carved a smoking crater into the creature's glass armor, but the beast didn't even flinch. It shrieked—a deafening, bone-drilling screech of grinding tectonic plates that turned their inner ears to liquid fire.

A blade of blinding light materialized in the entity's hand, whipping through the air in a decapitating arc aimed straight at Joshua's throat.

Joshua dropped flat, the razor-sharp wind scorching his skin, but Mei was already rocketing off his shoulder. Gravity abandoned her as she plunged downward, driving both daggers with every ounce of her body weight directly into the entity's central slit of light.

Steel crunched through dense, unnatural core.

A geyser of liquid black blood and blinding white fire erupted upward, scorching the night sky. The entity seized, its massive glass frame imploding into a lethal rain of razor-sharp shrapnel that battered their barriers. Behind it, the obsidian fissure shrieked, fractured, and snapped shut with a vacuum-pop that stole the air right out of their lungs.

Mei landed in the cooling ash, yanking her blades free with a sickening squelch. She didn't blink, her chest heaving as she stared down the smoking trail leading deeper into the ruined city.

"One down," Mei breathed, her voice dripping with lethal intent. "Let's go harvest the rest."

The ground dropped out.

A subterranean roar ripped through the crater, turning the ash to liquid and sending the shattered walls caving inward.

"Movement!" Lucien yelled, his hex-chains snapping taut.

Shadows tore free from the melting steel—dozens of elite stalkers wrapped in void-cloak, scythe-claws ticking against the stone with terrifying, synchronized speed. They slammed the perimeter shut before Team Blaze could blink.

"Trap inside a trap," Joshua snarled, blood slicking his hilt.

"Good," Mei smiled, cold and feral. "Saves us the hunt."

She vanished. A streak of kinetic violence, Mei intercepted the lead stalker mid-leap, her daggers parting its void-armor like silk before its head even hit the dirt.

Shane detonated his golden aura, a human battering ram slamming into a triple-threat charge and sending them skidding across superheated glass. Lucien didn't blink, stitching a razor-wire net of crimson runes low across the floor that severed the next wave at the knees.

Adrian's scream tore through the comms, buried under blaring klaxons. "Mei! You're standing on a secondary nexus—get out!"

"We can't hold this!" Joshua roared, deflecting a flurry of shadow-claws that hammered his chest.

At the crater's center, the ash bubbled, boiling over with an angry, pulsating crimson. Mei slammed her dagger into the trembling pavement to anchor herself against the seismic lurch, her eyes locking onto the bleeding core.

"We aren't leaving," Mei snarled, cutting through the panic like a blade. "Break their formation. We choke the core in its own blood."

Team Blaze moved as a singular, lethal engine, translating Mei's command into brutal, unyielding momentum. Shane planted his tower shield like a wedge, taking the full brunt of a charging stalker hoard and shattering their advance in an explosion of golden light. Lucien spun into the opening, his hex-chains whipping through the smoke to decapitate the flanking beasts before they could regroup.

Joshua surged forward, his blade igniting with a blinding, white-hot fury as he brought it down directly onto the bubbling crimson core. The impact triggered a cataclysmic chain reaction, a blinding flash of raw energy that vaporized the remaining shadow-stalkers into nothingness and blew the crater walls wide open.

As the shockwave faded and the ash settled into absolute silence, Mei stood tall amid the ruins, her blades humming with residual heat. The second anchor was gone, and the city's skyline flickered back to steady life.

"Message delivered," Mei said, turning away from the smoking crater. "Let's finish the war."
