Chapter 43: Team Blaze: Zero Hour

The creature hit the pavement with a bone-shattering thud, black energy spraying across the asphalt as it dissolved into ash. Deprived of the rift, the surviving crawlers faltered—their movements turning sluggish before they scattered into the dark or melted into sludge.

Mei flicked the black residue off her daggers in one smooth motion.

Joshua dropped into step beside her, chest heaving. His eyes snapped straight to the fresh tear on her sleeve. "You hurt?"

"Nothing serious."

His jaw tightened, but he didn't push it.

Across the street, Lucien leaned against a cracked storefront, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Please tell me that was the last surprise."

Adrian's voice crackled through the comm, sharp and laced with static. "No."

Along the skyline, the remaining Gate nodes flickered, pulsing in a rapid, synchronized heartbeat.

Mei looked up.

"The gate we just smashed wasn't the target," Adrian warned. "It was a test."

"Then what's the target?" Joshua demanded.

Before Adrian could answer, every streetlight, neon sign, and arc-lamp in the city went pitch black.

Silence swallowed the avenue. A single, breath-held second of total darkness.

Then, the Gate nodes ignited in a blinding chain reaction, carving a massive, burning geometric grid across the clouds—and zeroing in directly on their coordinates.

Mei's eyes darted across the terrain. Debris blocked the alleyways. The east road was impassable. "North. Now."

Shane surged forward, shield leading the breach. Joshua fell in seamlessly at Mei's left flank while Lucien slipped into the shadows along the storefronts, fingers already tracing defensive hexes in the air.

"Three blocks north," Adrian's voice cut through the static. "That's where the mana signal is spiking highest."

"Then we move," Mei said.

"Mei, wait," Adrian hesitated. "We don't know what's waiting at that core."

"We'll find out when we kill it."

The sky held its breath.

BOOM.

A spatial shockwave tore through the clouds as every Gate flared at once.

Then, a voice echoed through the rain—not from the sky, but directly inside their skulls. Smooth. Ancient. Horrifyingly close.

"Found you."

Joshua's knuckles turned white on his hilt. Shane's aura flared defensively, and Lucien's hex-chains snapped to life around his wrists.

Mei reversed her grip on her daggers, her eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits as she sprinted toward the burning skyline.

"For once, we aren't letting the dungeon pick the ground," Mei snapped, her voice cutting through the panic like a blade. "We choose."

Team Blaze moved as one, tearing through the rain.

Whatever had been buried beneath the guild had studied them. Mei intended to make sure its awakening was short-lived.

Rain exploded off the pavement as Team Blaze didn't just run—they hunted. The burning geometric grid overhead scorched the sky, casting the alleyway in violent, flashing strokes of white and violet. Joshua tore through a barricade of crumbling masonry, his blade screaming with a volatile charge, while Lucien whipped glowing mana-chains behind them to shatter trailing debris.

The air turned thick, choking on ozone and the stench of scorched iron. Lungs burned. Muscles screamed. Nobody slowed. The enemy wanted a reckoning? Team Blaze was bringing it straight to their door. Three blocks ahead, the core detonated in a towering pillar of light, and Mei didn't hesitate. She threw herself into the blinding glare, weapons drawn, ready to tear the heart out of whatever waited in the dark.
