Chapter 42: Together Against the Dark

Mei landed with a jarring thud, the soles of her boots absorbing the shockwave as the smell of ozone and wet copper flooded her lungs. Through the haze of smoke and neon, her eyes swept the square.

Lucien was still standing, his left arm hanging limp, blood dripping from his fingers and sizzling on the hot pavement. Joshua was breathing in ragged, shallow gasps, clutching a deep gash along his ribs, but his grip on his hilt remained ironclad. Shane hauled himself out of a pile of shattered masonry with a guttural growl, shaking concrete dust from his dreadlocks.

They were battered, bleeding, and exhausted. But their eyes were sharp. They could still fight.

Her attention snapped back to the ruined Gate. The metallic screeching from the other side chilled the back of her neck. Crawlers had poured out in swarms, but none had possessed the raw, bone-crushing mass to strike the frame from within like that. Something far worse was hammering against the threshold, eager to tear its way through.

"One primary Gate is down," Adrian's voice crackled through the comms, taut with uncharacteristic strain.

High above, the skyline flickered. Mei tracked the crimson node lights across the rain-slicked rooftops as they snuffed out one by one, plunging entire blocks into darkness.

"How long?" she demanded, her pulse steady despite the cold drizzle soaking through her collar.

"Two minutes and forty seconds." Adrian paused, the faint rustle of his papers cutting through the static. "Something's wrong."

His emerald projection materialized between them, light fracturing across the puddles. The active energy routes shifted violently, abandoning the commercial district and funneling straight toward the northern sector until a single, narrow alleyway remained illuminated.

Mei studied the empty road. The silence hanging over it was heavy, suffocating. It was too clean, too isolated, and offered zero tactical exits.

"That's where it wants us."

Joshua stepped up beside her, the heat radiating off his body mixing with the chill of the rain. "You sure?"

"No." She drew her obsidian daggers, the metal ice-cold against her palms. "But we're going anyway."

She took a step forward, only for a warm, heavy grip to clamp around her wrist.

Mei froze, looking back over her shoulder.

"You don't have to be the first one into every trap," Joshua said. His voice was low, controlled, but the tremor in his fingers betrayed him. His grip tightened—desperate, fierce—before he abruptly released her, his chest heaving as he swallowed hard.

Mei studied the raw concern in his eyes for a fraction of a second. The old instinct to pull away, to treat empathy as a liability, flickered and died.

"I know," she murmured softly.

They moved in unison down the dark corridor of the street.

Mei's senses were dialed to absolute maximum. She listened to the hum of dead power lines, the patter of rain against rusted fire escapes, the tense, synchronized footsteps of the three men behind her. But nothing moved. The oppressive absence of an ambush only confirmed the knot tightening in her gut.

They had barely reached the next intersection when the asphalt beneath them groaned.

A wave of kinetic violence burst upward. A pulse of pure, suffocating dark mana tore through the street, the shockwave throwing Joshua sideways with a sharp grunt. Shane slammed his shield into the ground, his crimson taunt aura flaring as he absorbed the brunt of the blast, while Lucien skidded back, bracing his body against a brick wall with a hissed curse. Black light threaded through the fractures in the road like liquid poison, surging forward.

"It's tracking us," Lucien spat, wiping a streak of black blood from his lip.

Mei's eyes locked onto the glowing current. "Move!"

They scattered a heartbeat before the pavement detonated. A narrow fissure tore wide open, exposing a pulsing vein of black mana beneath the city's concrete skin. The air above it warped, screeching as a spatial rift split the atmosphere. Rain and loose gravel were sucked toward the violet distortion; nearby cars groaned, sliding across the slick asphalt, and windows shattered in a deafening cascade of falling glass.

Shane planted his boots, holding the line as a wave of screeching Crawlers clawed their way out of the tear. His shield swept forward in a brutal arc, crushing the lead beast's skull and driving the horde back. The opening bought Lucien time—golden bindings erupted from his right hand, wrapping tightly around two creatures before he slammed his palm downward, redirecting the light magic directly into the dark current beneath the street.

"There!" Lucien yelled, sweat stinging his eyes.

The corrupted flow bent sideways under the holy light, exposing a jagged, pulsing anchor embedded deep beneath the road.

Mei ghosted toward it.

Before she could reach the node, a colossal Crawler broke through the perimeter, its armored shoulder slamming full-force into Joshua. The impact sounded like a cannon shot. Sword catching the beast's claws, Joshua was driven backward, his boots carving deep grooves into the wet stone.

"Go!" he roared, blood spitting from his teeth as he held the monster's jaw inches from his face.

Shane lunged to cover him, but two more beasts rushed from the shadows, snapping at his flank. Shane slammed his shield into one, driving it under his boots, while Lucien's golden bindings strained and flickered against the remaining tide.

Mei didn't look back. She kept sprinted toward the anchor.

The rift pulsed again, the air growing heavy enough to press the oxygen from her lungs. The street dropped several inches with a sickening crunch. A crack shot through the pavement right under her boots, forcing her to vault sideways as a wave of dark energy geysered into the sky. Behind the portal, something gargantuan struck the spatial wall. The shudder rattled the surrounding skyscrapers.

"Mei!" Joshua's panicked roar echoed over the noise.

She didn't stop.

The entity tore through. An armored hand, broad as a siege weapon, shattered the edges of the rift, dragging a massive, towering frame into the street. It was clad in spiked obsidian plate, corrupted energy surging through its joints like living magma. The moment its burning optic sensors ignited, it locked onto Mei and charged, the ground trembling under its weight.

Joshua threw himself into its path.

Steel met dark plate with a deafening CLACK that sent a blinding sheet of water and sparks flying across the plaza. But the sheer mass of the monster overpowered him—Joshua was driven to one knee, the stone cracking beneath his joint as his arms trembled under the crushing force of its blade.

"Mei!" he bellowed, his veins bulging against his neck.

She flashed a glance over her shoulder.

"Keep moving!" he screamed through gritted teeth.

Trusting him, Mei turned back to the anchor. Shane slammed his shield into the titan's flank with a battle cry, staggering the monster just long enough for Lucien to cast his last reserve, golden light wrapping tight around the beast's sweeping arm.

"Now!" Lucien screamed, his nose bleeding from the strain.

Mei reached the node and drove both obsidian daggers deep into the pavement. The blades struck the dense outer shell—and black energy surged up her weapons, searing her forearms with agonizing heat. The dark metal began repairing itself around her steel.

With a harsh cry, Mei twisted her right dagger sideways. The protective casing fractured, exposing the raw, pulsing dark crystal inside.

Behind her, the rift expanded into a roaring vortex.

A second, massive shadow began pushing its way through the plasma.

Joshua saw it while fighting to keep the first titan's blade off his throat. "There's another one coming!"

Lucien's golden bindings shattered with a sound like breaking glass. "I can't hold it!"

Shane dug his heels into the gravel, his shield buckling as the monster dragged him forward by inches. "Mei, whatever you're doing, do it now!"

Mei jammed her second dagger directly into the crack and yanked with everything she had, tearing the shell apart to expose the beating heart of the node. Behind her, the titan broke free, throwing Joshua aside like a ragdoll as it turned its massive broadsword toward her back. Shane's shield gave out under a secondary strike, but before the monster's blade could split her shoulder, Mei plunged her dagger straight into the core.

She twisted the blade.

CRACK.

The crystal shattered into a million sharp fragments.

The rift violently inverted, turning into a howling vacuum that dragged the corrupted energy back into the void. The second monster let out an otherworldly shriek as the closing portal severed its advance, snapping shut into a pinprick of light.

The effect on the remaining titan was instant.

The blazing crimson glow beneath its armor sputtered and died. Its forward momentum faltered, its terrifying speed evaporating into sluggish, heavy movements. It swung blindly at Shane, but this time, Shane caught the blow squarely on his shield, absorbing the force and driving the monster back three steps with a heavy grunt.

Mei rose slowly, watching the titan stumble.

It was still a terrifying wall of steel and muscle, more than capable of crushing any of them into paste if they slipped up. But the ancient, overwhelming magic that had made it feel untouchable was gone.

The Gate had been its lifeline.

Now, it was just an enemy standing in the rain.

Joshua pushed himself upright, wiping a mixture of rain and blood from his jaw, and moved seamlessly back into position beside Shane. Lucien released his broken spell with a ragged breath, pulling his good blade and stepping up to flank. Mei yanked her daggers from the smoking crater and fell into line beside them.

The monster looked toward the empty air where the portal had been, confused, before turning its dark gaze back to the four hunters circling it.

Mei tightened her grip on her hilts, a cold, razor-thin smile touching her lips.

"There isn't anywhere to run."

The creature roared, its voice echoing hollowly against the wet stone, and charged.

This time, Team Blaze met it together.
