Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 41: Gatekeeper's Debt
The Eternal Seal Guild hadn't been built to keep secrets; it was built to bury a monster.
Rain transformed the courtyard into a mirror of black stone and neon as Team Blaze moved deeper into the stronghold. Fei was currently locked in a cell across town, bound and disarmed after Team Shadow's perimeter line had collapsed under Mei's assault—but Adrian didn't spare the main floor a second glance. His fingers trailed the marble railing, green mana flaring over his knuckles.
"This isn't a vault," Adrian snapped, his voice sharp with sudden tension. "The mana network bypasses the lower hall entirely. It drops three levels into absolute dark."
"Lead," Mei commanded.
They descended into the earth. Polished marble quickly dissolved into damp stone, rusted iron, and the stench of copper and old blood. At the base of the final staircase stood a colossal circular door carved in ancient Dungeon Script.
The Gate Key inside Mei's pouch turned ice-cold.
"Don't touch it—!" Adrian began.
Too late. The key violently vibrated against Mei's hip. Black light surged through the runes, discharging a kinetic shockwave that shattered the corridor's stone walls.
Shane planted his shield, his taunt aura absorbing the force. Lucien raised a golden hex barrier while Joshua grabbed Mei's arm, anchoring her as the floor buckled. Adrian dropped to one knee, forcing crimson suppression runes straight into the floor.
"It's reacting to the key!" Shane roared over the noise.
BOOM.
Something massive struck the inside of the door. The iron frame bowed inward with a deafening screech. Cracks spiderwebbed across the rock.
"Something's alive in there!" Joshua drew his sword, stepping in front of Mei.
"No," Adrian grunted, severing three glowing channels with a sweep of his hand. "Something is sealed in there."
The pressure abruptly snapped. The heavy door groaned and swung open on its own.
A wave of suffocating, ancient cold hit them. Beyond lay a vast underground amphitheater. Twelve stone pedestals surrounded a black altar at the center—eleven stood empty, but the twelfth held a glowing blue crystal bound by thick, black-metal chains.
"This place wasn't built to protect treasure," Mei whispered, her daggers slipping into her palms.
"It was built to keep something from getting out," Adrian replied.
The crystal flared crimson. Every chain tightened with a metallic shriek.
The Gate Key tore itself from Mei's pouch, rocketing across the chamber to slam directly into the altar core.
Shockwaves detonated. Adrian threw up a green barrier just as the blast hit, his boots carving deep grooves into the floor as he absorbed the impact. Shane slammed his shield beside him to reinforce the line.
CRACK.
The first chain snapped. A deep, wet sound echoed from the dark beneath the altar.
Breathing. Slow. Ravenous.
Floating text burned into the air: FIRST SEAL COMPROMISED. ELEVEN SEALS REMAIN.
Enormous symbols lit up the walls, a continental projection displaying hundreds of Gate locations across the land. Three turned pitch-black. Then nine. Then dozens.
"It's cascading," Lucien hissed, his blades bared.
"Faster than we can fight," Adrian said, sweat dripping from his chin as he held the remaining array together.
The black altar fractured down the middle. Five massive claw marks gouged through solid stone from underneath. From the abyss beneath, a single, gigantic eye opened—surrounded by liquid shadow, locking its gaze directly onto Mei.
Assassins don't panic. Mei analyzed the target in a fraction of a second. The altar was the anchor. The entity was still trapped beneath the threshold. Blindly attacking would only break the remaining locks.
"Adrian. How long?" Mei barked.
"Minutes," Adrian grunted, his runes burning white-hot against the strain.
"Then we buy them," Mei snapped, her voice cutting through the panic like steel. "We shut down every Gate in the city before this thing finds a path to the surface."
She turned on her heel, vaulting toward the stairs. Shane moved first, shield raised. Lucien and Joshua locked into formation beside her, their movements perfectly synchronized.
Mei glanced back once over her shoulder. "Don't die, strategist."
Adrian offered a ruthless, bloody grin. "Wasn't planning on it."
Team Blaze sprinted for the surface as the sirens across the city began to scream. Beneath the stone, the creature's eye tracked Mei's departure.
It had found its door. And it knew exactly who held the key.
