Chapter 22: Unwilling Allies, Broken Chains

  • Next Chapter

The Sovereign collapsed into ash.

Mei landed hard against the broken stone, catching herself with one hand against the wall. Her ribs ached from the creature's crushing grip, but nothing felt broken.

Joshua reached her side, extending a gloved hand. "You nearly killed yourself."

Mei accepted it, allowing him to pull her upright. "But I didn't."

"That isn't reassuring."

"It wasn't meant to be."

Captain Shane Williams approached, his sharp gaze sweeping the ruined chamber as he surveyed Team Blaze. "Is everyone accounted for?"

The field medic checked the three rescued Hunters and gave him a quick nod. Across the vault, Fei hovered at the damaged entrance, her twin blades sheathed and her dark Team Shadow jacket caught in the low light. She wasn't here under Shane's orders, but her sharp gaze tracked every move Team Blaze made. Beside them, Joshua retrieved his heavy chain from beneath the fallen titan's sword.

No one had escaped the fight untouched, but everyone was still standing.

A radiant system window materialized directly above the Sovereign's disintegrating remains.

BOSS DEFEATED: BLACK CROWN SOVEREIGN

FINAL ATTACK: CORE COLLAPSE

LETHAL BACKLASH: SURVIVED

TACTICAL CONDITION ACHIEVED

Mei barely finished scanning the interface before a crimson warning replaced it.

BLACK CROWN DOMAIN HAS RECOGNIZED YOUR COMBAT AUTHORITY.

Fei tilted her head, watching Mei with cold, calculating interest. "That sounds bad."

"It probably is."

The subterranean floor shifted beneath their feet.

This wasn't the chaotic tremor of a dungeon collapse. The movement was smooth, heavy, and deliberate—as though an ancient mechanism beneath the fortress had just clicked into place.

A circular seam fractured the shattered stone, sliding open to reveal a massive shaft descending into absolute darkness. Far below, a low red light pulsed through the shadows, illuminating enormous, silver-forged chains.

Joshua stepped toward the lip, staring down into the abyss. "Was the Sovereign guarding that?"

Mei studied the exposed shaft, her eyes locking onto the glowing runes carved into the links. They matched the symbols from the Eternal Seal chamber.

"No," she said softly. "It was keeping something contained."

A deep, metallic groan traveled upward through the shaft, vibrating through the soles of their boots.

SNAP.

One of the massive chains severed, whipping violently before its broken length plunged into the dark.

Mei's expression hardened as she watched it vanish. Whatever had been restrained beneath the Black Crown had just lost one of its primary anchors.

Fei adjusted her grip on her hilt, eyeing both the abyss and Team Blaze. "Team Shadow isn't letting you claim whatever is down there first."

Mei drew her remaining dagger, the obsidian blade catching the faint red light.

"Get the wounded ready to move."

Joshua looked from the dark opening back to her. "Where are we going?"

Mei stepped directly to the edge of the shaft, side-by-side with her rival.

"Down."

Another chain groaned beneath them, followed by a heavy, rhythmic pulse that shuddered through the bedrock.

Mei recognized it immediately.

It was a heartbeat, and its rhythm was accelerating.
