Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 21: Out of the Vault, Into the Ashes
The sky burned crimson over the shattered wasteland as three blood-red moons cast jagged shadows across the ruins of broken skyscrapers.
System Alert: [Hidden Dungeon Detected: Tomb of the Fallen Sovereign]
Difficulty: SSS | Recommendation: UNKNOWN | Status: Sealed 700 Years
Mei melted out of the shadows at the edge of the ancient stone gate, her twin obsidian daggers resting quiet against her thighs.
Power was survival. Survival was revenge. Images of her burning home, the betrayals, and the Shadow Dominion flashed through her mind—fueling the cold fire burning in her chest.
"Dungeons don't stay sealed that long unless something inside is trying to stay asleep," a low, smooth voice purred from the tree line.
Fei stepped into the crimson light, her twin blades drawn and her Team Shadow uniform gleaming with dark silver trim. She wasn't here as an ally; she was tracking the same high-tier core Team Blaze was after. But for now, her eyes glinted with a dangerous, unspoken truce. "Or unless someone's hiding something worth dying for."
"Step back, Shadow," Joshua warned, his hand dropping to his weapon hilt as he moved between Fei and the squad.
"Save your energy, Joshua," Fei sneered, tilting her head toward the sealed gate. "You won't even get past the threshold without a shadow-weaver. And last I checked, your team is a little short on those."
Mei didn't wait for them to argue. Approaching the stone gate, she flicked a shadow-infused needle into the central mechanism. With a precise twist, she picked the glyphic lock. The massive doors groaned open into pitch-black depths.
Fei slipped inside first with a mocking salute, and the moment Team Blaze crossed the threshold behind her, the stone gates slammed shut.
Trial One: The Hall of Greed
Dozens of winding paths diverged ahead, overflowing with golden weapons, overflowing chests of mana crystals, and glowing legendary armor.
"Trap," Joshua warned.
Mei activated Shadow Sight. Beneath the glittering illusions lay razor wire, void pits, and soul-devouring curses. "Step in my shadow."
Across the hall, Fei was already vaulting across a series of stone pillars, her Team Shadow training allowing her to ghost past the perimeter wards effortlessly. "Try to keep up, Blaze!"
They glided through the lethal maze, dodging collapse after collapse until they hit the true central vault. Mountains of ancient resources filled the hall, but a faint energy hum drew Mei toward a hidden alcove.
Hidden Reward: [Shadow King's Compass]
The moment Mei's gloved fingers brushed the cold metal, a holographic map detonated into light, pointing far beyond the wasteland to a single glowing icon: a black crown.
Joshua paled. "The Black Crown Fortress... it was supposed to be a myth."
Fei landed lightly on a ledge above them, her eyes narrowing as she locked onto the holographic crown. "So Team Shadow's intelligence was right after all."
Before anyone could move, the vault floor fractured.
WARNING: Boss Awakening
The subterranean floor detonated. A fifty-meter armored titan rose from the abyss, silver fire erupting from its hollow eyes. The Sovereign of Ashes raised a mountain-sized broadsword and swung.
BOOM!
Shockwaves obliterated half the chamber, blasting Team Blaze back into the stone walls.
"Buy me ten seconds!" Mei barked, vanishing into a pool of darkness.
"Don't command me, Blaze," Fei barked back—yet she blurred forward anyway, severing the monster's left forearm with a whirlwind of dark steel while Joshua drew its glowing gaze. But the titan's armor instantly regenerated, its massive blade sweeping around to crush them.
Mei reappeared directly behind the titan's neck, using Shadow Step to scale its gargantuan shoulder plates. Deep within the armor gaps hummed a pulsing crimson core.
Skill Activated: [Heartseeker Strike]
Mei drove both daggers deep into the gaps of the titan's chest. She channeled every drop of dark mana, unleashing a concentrated, void-infused burst directly into the exposed core.
The Sovereign froze, the silver fire in its eyes sputtering out before its entire frame collapsed into a mountain of dust.
In the heavy silence, a massive chest materialized in the ash and clicked open.
Mythic Treasure: [Heart of the Apocalypse]
Warning: Connected to the origin of the world's destruction.
A private interface flashed before Mei's eyes:
New Main Quest: Reach the Black Crown Fortress.
Objective: Eliminate the Architect of the End.
Reward: Revenge.
Mei closed her hand around the blazing black crystal. The age of survival was over. The age of revenge had just begun.
The ash hadn't even settled before the dungeon structure began to collapse.
CRACK.
Fault lines splintered the cavern floor. "Out! Move!" Joshua yelled as a fallen pillar shattered beside him.
"The main gate is sealed!" Fei called out from across the room, parrying falling rubble with her blades. "Your retreat is cut off!"
Mei slid the relic into her inventory, her eyes sweeping the room in a cold, calculating sweep. The Shadow King's Compass pointed to a newly exposed spatial tear behind the empty throne.
System Alert: Spatial Rift Unstable | Collapse Imminent: 10 Seconds
"Into the rift!" Mei ghosted toward the tear.
Fei reached it a fraction of a second ahead of them, casting a backward glance at Mei before diving in. Team Blaze followed headfirst into the violet plasma just as the vault ceiling caved in.
Light detonated. Gravity inverted.
THUD.
Mei landed silently in cold ash, rolling instantly into a low crouch with blades raised.
They stood on the ridge of an obsidian crater miles away. Below lay a path lined with iron pikes holding ancient leviathan skeletons—and at the horizon stood a colossal fortress wrapped in massive chains. The Black Crown.
A war horn echoed across the crater. Dark figures manifested along the ridge—armored riders mounted on six-legged beasts.
Target Analysis: Dread Vanguard (Lv. 95) | Quantity: 40+
"Hold the line!" Joshua called out, bracing his stance.
"Holding is for defense," Fei sneered from a high perch, her Team Shadow crest flaring dark purple as she dived into the vanguard in a flurry of steel.
Three riders bypassed the chaos, charging straight for Mei with lances lowered.
Mei didn't flinch. She activated Shadow Veil, dissolving into thin air as the lead lance thrust forward.
Skill Activated: [Blade Dance]
She reappeared above the lead rider, slicing his throat before leaping to the next, her daggers leaving trails of black plasma. Within three heartbeats, all three riders crashed to the sand, dead before their beasts hit the ground.
Mei landed lightly beside the dying commander pinned beneath his mount.
"The... Sovereign's seal..." he choked out through his helm.
"I didn't break it," Mei whispered, leaning down to slide a thin stiletto beneath his armor joint. "I reclaimed what was stolen."
She twisted the blade.
Quest Progress Updated: [The Path to the Black Crown]
Distance Remaining: 12 Leagues | Shadow Dominion Awareness: 100%
Silence reclaimed the crater.
Fei stepped out from the pile of defeated vanguards, flicking black blood off her swords. She sheathed her blades and looked at Mei, her stance wary, competitive, and sharp.
"They know we're here now," Fei said, her voice dropping. "And when Team Shadow comes for that fortress, Mei, I won't be standing on your side."
Mei wiped her daggers clean, her eyes fixed on the distant silhouette of the fortress burning under the crimson moons.
"Good," Mei said softly, vanishing back into the shadows. "It saves us the trouble of hunting you down."
