Chapter 20: Memory of the Void

Mei and Fei disappeared deeper into the subterranean ruins while Captain Shane and Joshua guided the wounded Blaze vanguard toward the upper junction.

For several seconds, absolute silence swallowed the corridor. Then every light in the gate died at once.

Mei stopped, her blade snapping up into a low guard. Beside her, Fei's twin daggers flared with static as she scanned the pitch-black passage.

"What happened?" Fei whispered, her back pressing against Mei's shoulder. "Did Shadow cut the perimeter power?"

"No," Mei said. She held up her left hand. The purple mark etched into her palm was glowing with a harsh, rhythmic pulse. The illumination wasn't coming from local energy systems or Shadow's tactical flares—something deep beneath the stone floor was resonating directly with her presence.

A low, subterranean roar rolled through the bedrock. It wasn't a mechanical vibration; it felt like a massive, ancient entity turning in its sleep miles below.

Mei turned toward the solid granite wall beside them.

A razor-thin line of violet light tore across its surface, branching into dozens of glowing veins. Within seconds, the luminescent lines locked into an intricate, geometric array Mei recognized with dead certainty.

The Eternal Seal.

Fei's breath hitched as the glow reflected in her eyes. "Mei... that's the vault glyph from the core reports."

"I know," Mei said quietly.

The symbol fractured, and the solid stone wall opened inward without a sound. It wasn't a standard corridor or a vault door. The darkness spilling out felt heavy, almost conscious, watching them from the abyss.

Far below lay a subterranean cavern filled with a motionless, pitch-black sea. Enormous silver chains—each link the size of an armored transport—plunged into the dark water, vanishing into depths no optic scanner could penetrate.

Mei felt the crushing atmospheric pressure before her mind fully registered the threat. It was the exact same crushing presence that had drowned her during the final moments of her first life—the hungry, formless entity that had consumed her when she sacrificed herself to become the Eternal Seal.

Her grip on her hilt tightened until her knuckles turned white. "The Void Heart."

Fei stared down into the endless void, her daggers trembling slightly. "Why is a core anomaly like that embedded under a low-tier gate? Shadow's briefing said this sector was clear."

Mei didn't answer. Glowing, ancient script was burning itself into the rock face above the drop:

ETERNAL SEAL CANDIDATE LOCATED.

PREVIOUS HOST MEMORY DETECTED.

Mei's blood went cold. The dungeon hadn't merely identified her energy signature. It recognized her soul. It remembered her death.

Behind them, at the upper junction, Team Shadow's recovery unit halted. Ethan stood before a flickering tactical interface, his face turning to stone as the same alert painted his visor in warning red:

SEALING PROCEDURE: REACTIVATION AVAILABLE.

"Change of parameters," Ethan ordered into his comms, his voice flat and unyielding. "Do not neutralize Mei."

A Shadow operative paused, his sniper rifle trained down the shaft. "Sir? She's compromised the perimeter. Captain Shane's unit is regrouping."

"I don't care about Blaze," Ethan snapped. "Contain Mei. Bring her to the core chamber alive."

Deep below the cavern floor, a deafening SNAP echoed through the abyss. One of the massive silver chains severed, whipping through the black water and sending a shockwave up the shaft that nearly knocked Fei off her feet.

In her first life, the Void Heart had taken Mei because she had willingly stepped into the dark to save her world. This time, the darkness had hunted her down before she could ever reach the vault.

Mei stared down into the abyss, her golden energy flaring along the length of her spear. She had died for the Seal once. She wasn't going to let Team Shadow, or the dungeon, make her a prisoner again.
