Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 19: Out of the Shadow
The tactical display glitched, pixelating into a fractured split-screen feed. On the left side, Ethan's cold, stoic image stabilized over the Team Shadow transmission. On the right, the combat telemetry for Team Blaze flickered erratically as the chamber lights died.
Ethan's gaze locked directly onto Mei. He completely ignored Joshua. He ignored Captain Shane.
"You still don't understand why Team Shadow brought you here," Ethan said, his tone razor-sharp and devoid of emotion.
Mei's fingers tightened around her hilt, her knuckles turning bone-white. "I understand enough."
"No." Ethan's faint, condescending smile vanished. "You think Shadow deployed Blaze into this gate because we needed raw combat data on Shane's unit." He paused, letting the heavy silence settle over the room. "Team Blaze was just the catalyst. You were the objective."
Joshua instantly stepped in front of the terminal, his heavy armor blocking Ethan's view of her. "Explain, Ethan."
Ethan didn't even blink, speaking past Joshua's shoulder as if he weren't there. "Mei was Team Shadow's top assassin. She knew our strike patterns. She knew our encryption, our comms, our hunting protocols. She could read a Shadow squad formation before the first ambush was even signaled."
Mei said nothing. She didn't need to. Every word was true. She had spent years learning how Shadow killed—and years learning how to survive them.
"Then you deserted," Ethan continued quietly.
"Left," Mei corrected, her voice dropping into an arctic register.
"Whatever term lets you sleep at night." Ethan's eyes hardened through the static. "When you resurfaced with Blaze, you were different."
"You mean I stopped taking orders from Shadow."
"I mean you became unpredictable."
Behind them, the tactical calibration console shrieked.
SUBJECT: MEI — PREDICTIVE COMBAT MODEL: 94%
Then the numbers corrupted, cascading into a jagged crimson loop.
ERROR. DATA CORRUPTED.
Ethan's expression darkened. "That's why you're a threat to both teams."
Joshua glanced back at the flashing error screen. "The system can't map her actions."
"It could," Chen Zhou interjected from Team Shadow's auxiliary feed, his posture rigid. "If she still fought using Shadow protocols."
A slow, dangerous smile touched Mei's lips. "I don't."
"No," Ethan admitted. "And that is the operational anomaly."
The dungeon's tactical AI had already mapped Team Blaze's combat doctrines. It knew Captain Shane held the frontline shield wall. It knew Joshua prioritized perimeter control and covering the wounded. It knew Blaze's vanguard moved with structured, military precision. Those patterns were predictable.
Mei was a wild card. She would abandon a position she seemed to be guarding, switch weapons mid-stride, reverse momentum on a dime, break formation, and draw enemy focus—only to strike from an angle Shadow's analytical models had already ruled impossible. Team Shadow had engineered her into a master lethal chameleon, and now they were terrified of what they had created.
"There is another factor," Ethan added softly.
Mei's posture shifted slightly. Ethan caught it instantly.
"The dungeons react directly to your presence," Ethan said, leaning closer to his optic feed. "You identify vault mechanisms before Shadow's scanners pick up the signatures. You knew the Core was being stabilized. You knew where the anchors were." His eyes narrowed. "And you recognized the Eternal Seal."
Mei's blood went cold. He couldn't know about my first life. Not the full truth. But Shadow had pieced together enough to pose a clear danger.
"You think I'm bound to the Void Heart," Mei said coldly.
"I don't speculate." Ethan brought up a classified archive on the shared display.
SUBJECT: MEI
AFFILIATION: FORMER TEAM SHADOW / CURRENT TEAM BLAZE
DUNGEON COMPATIBILITY: ABNORMAL
VOID HEART RESPONSE: CONFIRMED
Joshua stared at the file, his gauntlets charging with a dangerous hum. "What the hell is Shadow pulling here?"
Ethan answered without breaking eye contact with Mei. "Before you left Shadow, our research division confirmed a theory. The dungeons aren't just expanding into our reality. They're searching for a core vessel."
"The Void Heart," Mei said.
"And every anomaly leads straight back to you." Ethan's voice cut through the hum of the chamber. "That's why Team Shadow couldn't simply eliminate you."
Captain Shane raised his heavy shield, his weapon whining as it reached full charge. "So what was Shadow's play?"
"Containment," Ethan replied smoothly. "We needed Mei isolated from Team Blaze. We needed her pushed into a high-stress, controlled dungeon environment where her neural link to the core would force a reaction."
Mei saw the whole trap clearly now. "You used Blaze as bait to force the dungeon to trigger my response."
"Precisely."
Fei's face drained of color on the secondary monitor. "You were going to turn her over to the research wing."
"No," Mei corrected, her blade sliding clear of its scabbard with a sharp metallic hiss. "They were going to use me to open the seal."
A loud siren pierced the chamber as the calibration board flashed wildly.
WARNING: HIGH-DENSITY VOID RESPONSE DETECTED.
The floor shuddered beneath their feet as Team Shadow's signal began to degrade into heavy digital noise.
Mei looked down at the glowing glyphs illuminating beneath her boots. She finally understood Shadow's full strategy. Team Shadow hadn't sent Team Blaze into this gate just to measure their combat limits. They sent Blaze because they knew Blaze would protect her. Shadow wanted to observe how Mei fought when her teammates were threatened, pinpointing the exact people she would sacrifice herself to save—giving Shadow the ultimate leverage over her.
Joshua stepped beside her, his heavy armor creating an immovable wall between her and the sealed door. "Mei."
She glanced up at him.
"Shadow isn't taking you," Joshua said, his voice unyielding. "And they aren't using Blaze."
Her eyes softened for a fraction of a second before her cold focus returned. She turned toward the dark portal opening at the end of the hall.
"No," she said. "They're not."
Behind them, the primary blast doors slammed shut, locking Team Blaze inside the core room while Team Shadow's feed cut to black.
Mei looked at the locked exits, then at the glitching red error screen above. The dangerous smile returned to her face.
"If Shadow wants data on how I fight now..." She raised her spear, the silver edge burning with golden energy. "...let's give them a show."
