Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 18: Breaking Point
Mei's silver eyes narrowed as her focus narrowed to a razor-thin point. Ethan thought he had locked the board, but he had calculated against standard Blaze tactics—not an assassin trained in the same shadow protocols as his own squad.
Target one: break Jacob's pin. Target two: dislodge Ryker's sniper line. Target three: neutralize Ethan's sightline.
She moved.
Before Fei could reset her guard, Mei vanished in a burst of lateral speed. She didn't attack Fei—she used her blade's flat edge to leap off Fei's shoulder armor, launching herself across the cavern like a hurled spear.
In mid-air, Mei inverted her grip, driving the hilt of her secondary dagger into Jacob's exposed neck joint. The heavy enforcer grunted as the precise strike disrupted his nerve flow, his iron grip on Joshua loosening just enough.
"Joshua! High power, now!" Mei barked, her voice cutting through the noise.
Joshua didn't hesitate. The moment his shoulders freed, he slammed both gauntlets into the obsidian deck. A blinding shockwave of blue lightning rippled outward, driving Jacob back three paces and scattering the smoke.
Without missing a beat, Mei hit the ground, rolled, and threw her primary dagger upward with terrifying velocity.
Fifty feet above, Ryker caught the blur in his scope a millisecond too late. The heavy blade shattered his thermal sight and pinned his sleeve to the rock wall behind him, forcing him off the perch.
"Fei, close it!" Ethan commanded, firing two suppression rounds at Mei's path.
Mei didn't try to dodge the gunfire—she used the cover of Shane's massive frame. "Captain, lift!"
Shane grinned through the blood on his lip. He planted his boots, roared, and thrust his shield upward like a catapult. Mei sprang onto the glowing energy ridge, using the Captain's sheer physical power to launch herself straight over Ethan's defensive line.
She landed three inches from Ethan, a backup blade already pressing against the soft armor at his throat before he could finish pivoting his firearm. The razor edge drew a thin bead of crimson against his skin.
The entire cavern fell into a dead, breath-stealing silence.
Across the hall, Joshua's gauntlets hummed with lethal charge aimed at Jacob. Shane stood tall, his shield locked down to block Fei's approach. Ryker hung suspended from the ledge, disarmed.
Mei's chest heaved softly, her breath steady, her gaze locked onto Ethan's calm eyes.
"Ambush broken," Mei whispered icy cold into his ear. "Your turn to yield."
Ethan didn't flinch. Even with the cold bite of Mei's steel pressed against the pulse point on his throat, his expression remained infuriatingly calm. His dark eyes flicked down to her hand, measuring the absolute lack of tremor in her grip, before rising back to meet her gaze.
"Fast," Ethan acknowledged quietly, his voice low enough that only she could hear over the hum of charged gauntlets and crackling void energy. "You've picked up their habit of taking stupid risks, Mei."
"It's not a risk if it works," Mei replied, her grip tightening by a fraction of a millimeter.
Across the shattered chamber, the standoff held by a thread. Jacob stood frozen with Joshua's blue arc-lightning crackling inches from his face. High above, Ryker grunted as he ripped his sleeve free from the pinned dagger, left without a clear shot. Fei hovered at the edge of the smoke, her curved blades lowered just an inch, waiting for a signal that wasn't coming.
Ethan's eyes swept the room, taking in Team Blaze's defensive net. Shane was already repositioning his shield to cover Mei's back, while Joshua's gauntlets held steady. The element of surprise was gone. The tactical window had closed.
"Jacob. Fei. Ryker," Ethan called out, his tone crisp and free of emotion. "Disengage."
Jacob let out a heavy, disappointed breath, stepping back two paces with his hands raised slightly. On the ridge above, Ryker slung his rifle over his back and melted into the shadow of the upper vault. Fei glared at Mei with cold promise before sheathing her blades and backing away into the grey mist.
Ethan slowly raised both hands to chest height. "You win this round, Captain," he said, turning his head slightly toward Shane. "The core room is yours to bleed in."
"Get out of our Gate, Ethan," Shane growled, his heavy shield humming as he maintained his guard. "Before I decide to bill Shadow Squad for the damage."
A faint, sharp smile touched Ethan's lips. He looked back at Mei, his gaze lingering on the red and gold crest on her shoulder. "You held the line, asset. But when the Devourer King's remnants break through that inner seal, we'll see if your new team can keep up with the body count."
Mei didn't answer. She simply eased her dagger back from his neck, stepping smoothly into a defensive pivot as Ethan took three slow paces backward.
Without another word, Ethan turned and melted into the swirling crimson fog, Shadow Squad dissolving into the dark as seamlessly as they had arrived.
The cavern fell silent, save for the heavy breathing of Team Blaze and the distant, ominous thrumming of the Gate's core chamber waiting ahead.
Mei sheathed her blade, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. "They're gone, Captain."
Shane let out a long, heavy breath, lowering his shield with a dull thud. "Good work, team. Re-align your gear and check your vitals. The real fight's still waiting through that archway."
Joshua lowered his broadsword, the electric blue hum on his gauntlets sputtering out as he let out a harsh, ragged breath. "They slipped away too clean. Ethan doesn't retreat without leaving a parting gift."
"He doesn't," Mei agreed, her voice an icy, steady pulse in the dim crimson glow of the cavern. She crouched low near the shattered obsidian archway leading deeper into the Gate, her silver eyes scanning the jagged stone floor. "Shadow Squad relies on area denial. If they can't hold the ground, they make sure we bleed for every foot we take."
Shane stepped up behind them, his heavy shield planting into the stone with a dull thud. "Check the choke points. We're not stepping into an explosive kill-box while the Devourer King's remnants are waiting on the other side."
Mei drifted forward, her boots making zero sound against the glassed earth. Joshua walked two paces to her left, his gauntlets switched to a low-frequency scanning mode, sweeping a pale blue grid across the narrow corridor walls.
"Got something," Joshua muttered, freezing mid-step. He pointed toward a jagged fissure in the vault ceiling. "High-density energy signature. It's masking behind the ambient void radiation."
Mei tilted her head, tracing the micro-wires running along the rock face. "S-3 Micro-Mines. Ryker's design. He anchored them to the structural stress points. If we hit the trip-wire, it won't just blow—it'll collapse the entire ceiling, burying the Captain and the rest of the squad."
"Can you disarm them?" Joshua asked, stepping in close to project his gauntlet's localized disruption field over the primary detonation node, stabilizing the erratic energy signature.
"I don't need to disarm them," Mei said smoothly. She slid a thin, silver needle from her belt sleeve, her fingers deft and deliberate as she jammed it directly into the mine's primary receiver, rerouting its target protocol. "I just need to redirect the trigger."
Joshua watched her fingers move with terrifying precision, a faint, impressed smirk touching his lips despite the tension. "You've done this before."
"Shadow Squad uses standard military demolition doctrine," Mei replied, her voice dipping low as she clipped the last micro-lead. "They think in straight lines and clean chokepoints. They forgot I know every drill Ethan ever wrote."
She stood up, pulling Joshua back by his tactical vest just as a faint, metallic click echoed through the stone beneath their feet.
For a breathless second, neither of them moved.
Instead of an explosion, the mine network let out a soft, defeated hiss, its crimson indicator lights turning a docile, solid blue.
"Corridor clear," Mei announced, looking back over her shoulder at Captain Shane. "And if Ethan tries to flank us from behind, his own trap is set to collapse the tunnel on him."
Shane let out a low, gravelly chuckle. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Mei. Team, move up! The core chamber is right ahead."
The pulsing crimson light of the corridor faded, replaced by the deep, resonant thrumming of the core chamber just beyond the heavy obsidian doors.
Captain Shane and the rest of the squad took up perimeter positions down the hall, giving the front line a momentary breather to prep their gear. Joshua leaned against the cold stone, adjusting the energy dampener on his right gauntlet. His hands were steady, but the faint, tense set of his jaw betrayed the adrenaline still humming through his veins.
Mei stood near the threshold, quietly wiping the residual void-blood off her blade with a cloth.
"You knew exactly how Ethan's squad would move back there," Joshua said quietly, breaking the silence. He didn't look up from his gauntlet, but his voice was grounded, devoid of accusation. "Every drill, every trap, every angle. You read him like an open book."
Mei's fingers paused over her dagger. "I was trained in the same shadow protocols. In the dark, we all use the same blueprint."
"Maybe," Joshua said, turning his head to look at her directly. The blue glow of his gauntlet caught the sharp lines of his face. "But knowing how a killer thinks is one thing. Trusting someone who used to walk in those exact same shadows is another."
Mei turned, her silver eyes meeting his with cold, unyielding honesty. "Are you asking if I'm going to hesitate when we step through those doors, Joshua? Or if I'm going to put a blade in your back when the pressure hits?"
Joshua let out a low, breathy laugh, shaking his head. "Neither. I saw you leap off Fei's shoulder to clear my line. I saw you take down Ryker's perch before he could put a round through Shane's helm. You don't hesitate."
He straightened up, stepping closer until he stood beside her at the edge of the threshold.
"I'm saying Team Blaze doesn't operate on shadow protocols," Joshua continued softly, his tone shifting into something warm and unshakeable. "We don't treat each other like assets or contingency plans. Out there, Ethan looks at you and sees a tool that stepped out of line. In here... we see someone who has our back. I trust you, Mei. With my life. I just need to know if you're ready to let us have yours."
Mei stared at him. For a girl who had spent a lifetime treating survival as a solitary equation, the absolute certainty in his voice hit harder than any void-shockwave. A strange, unfamiliar warmth tightened behind her ribs.
She sheathed her dagger with a crisp, final click.
"I've spent a long time fighting alone," Mei said softly, the ghost of a faint smile touching her lips. "I think I'm ready to stop."
Joshua's grin flashed in the dim light—confident and steady. He raised his right gauntlet, knocking his armored fist lightly against her shoulder pad. "Then let's go kill a king."
The massive obsidian doors groaned, yielding to Captain Shane's brute strength as Team Blaze crossed the threshold into the core chamber.
They didn't even have time to register the towering, pulsating heart of the dungeon before the entire realm screamed.
It started not with a sound, but with a violent drop in pressure that popped Mei's ears. The pulsing crimson light illuminating the vast cavern instantly inverted, turning a blinding, sickly white. Beneath their boots, the solid stone deck didn't just crack—it shattered into floating, anti-gravity fragments.
K-K-K-BOOM!
"Structural failure!" Joshua roared over the deafening grind of tearing mountain bedrock. "The core isn't stable! The Devourer King's death severed the anchor!"
"Perimeter's falling in!" Blaze yelled, her auburn hair whipping frantically as her thermal gauntlets flared to life, burning away falling debris before it could crush them.
Huge, house-sized megaliths tumbled from the cavern ceiling, smashing through the floating walkways. Below them, a bottomless void of swirling grey mist and jagged void-spikes opened up like a hungry jaw.
"Form up on me!" Captain Shane bellowed, driving his heavy shield into the nearest stable ledge. A shimmering energy dome expanded around the squad, catching the first wave of falling rock with a series of explosive impacts. "We don't have a floor!"
Mei's silver hair whipped across her face, her sharp eyes tracking the chaotic geometry of the collapsing room. No footing. Gravity failing. The exit behind us is already buried.
"The central pillar!" Mei called out, her voice cutting through the noise with chilling precision. She pointed her spear toward a massive, glowing spire of ancient stone drifting near the heart of the void. "It's the only anchor point carrying a stable ley-line! If we hit that platform, we can ride the core's updraft out!"
"That's a fifty-foot jump across open air!" Adrian shouted, his twin storm-blades sparking violently as he sliced through a falling boulder. "With zero gravity control!"
"Then we don't jump," Joshua grinned, his gauntlets surging with crackling blue arc-energy. "We launch."
