Reborn in the Apocalypse: Rising Beyond the Ruins (unedited)
Chapter 17: First Trial: Ashfall Outskirts
Rain slicked the cracked asphalt of the Ashfall Outskirts, reflecting the flickering neon of the perimeter gate. Grey fallout residue dusted the decaying industrial ruins, clinging to the rust-choked alleyways that marked the neutral buffer zone between guild territories.
Captain Shane Williams stood at the front of Team Blaze's defensive line, his armored boots planted wide, his heavy shield resting tip-down on the concrete. Beside him, Mei kept her hands tucked loosely into the pockets of her Team Blaze jacket, her weight centered and ready to pivot. Behind them, Joshua Chen adjusted his wrist-mounted energy gauntlets, while Ryan spun a shock-baton with nervous precision.
Then the shadow stretched.
Four figures stepped out of the ruins with silent, military synchronization. At the center walked Ethan. He didn't rush; his posture was relaxed, yet every line of his frame radiated total, practiced control. To his right, Jacob Wong cracked his knuckles, his massive form looming like a siege weapon. To his left, Fei kept her arms crossed, her sharp gaze locking onto Mei with cool, calculating interest. Behind them, Ryker leaned against a light post, a long-range tactical rifle already resting comfortably over his shoulder.
"Boundary line is fifty yards back, Ethan," Shane said, his voice deep and unyielding. "You're out of Shadow Squad's territory."
Ethan stopped exactly twenty paces away. "Territory borders don't apply when there's an unaccounted asset on the field, Captain." His eyes shifted past Shane, landing square on Mei. "You look different in red and gold."
Mei didn't flinch. Her heart rate stayed locked at a steady forty beats per minute. "I fit better here."
"You belong in the dark with us," Fei countered, taking a slow step forward. "You know how we operate. Blaze is loud, chaotic, and soft."
"They're alive," Mei replied quietly. "And they don't leave people behind."
Jacob let out a low grunt, crossing his arms. "Touchy."
Shane lifted his shield an inch off the ground, the internal core humming to life with a low, vibrant rumble. "She made her choice, Shadow Leader. Team Blaze protects its own. If you want to challenge her contract, you go through me first."
For three long seconds, no one breathed.
Joshua stepped up behind Shane, gauntlets charging with a sharp crackle of blue energy. Across the gap, Ryker's fingers twitched near his trigger guard, and Jacob shifted his center of gravity to drive forward. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and rain.
Ethan looked at Shane's unwavering defense, then at Mei's absolute immobility. A faint, inscrutable smile touched the corner of his lips.
"Stand down," Ethan ordered softly.
Jacob relaxed his shoulders; Ryker lowered his rifle.
"This isn't over, Captain," Ethan said, stepping back into the shadows with his squad falling into formation around him. "The Gate is opening soon. We'll see how loud your team stays when the Devourer King's remnants spill through."
As Shadow Squad dissolved into the dark, Shane let out a long breath and rested his shield. He looked down at Mei. "You good?"
Mei watched the empty alleyway, her hands still in her pockets. "I'm good, Captain. Let's get back to base."
The air above the Ashfall Outskirts tore open with a sound like shattering glass.
In the heart of the decaying industrial ruins, a tear in reality expanded, swirling with crimson void light and heavy static. Ash and rust lifted off the cracked pavement, caught in the Gate's gravitational pull.
Captain Shane Williams slammed his heavy shield onto the asphalt, its internal core humming to life with a deep, reassuring pulse. "Form up! Standard assault wedge!"
Around him, Team Blaze locked into position. Joshua Chen stood on Shane's left, his wrist gauntlets charging with crackling blue energy. Blaze primed her gauntlets, her eyes reflecting the crimson glow of the rift, while Ryan checked the energy seal on his shock-baton.
Beside Shane, Mei pulled her tactical jacket tight, her hands sliding down to the hilts of her blades. Her pulse remained dead-steady. She didn't look at the tearing sky; her eyes swept the perimeter, watching the dark alleyways where Shadow Squad had disappeared moments before.
"No sign of Ethan's crew," Joshua noted over the comms, his voice tight. "They either slipped in ahead of us or they're waiting for us to clear the breach."
"Let them watch," Shane grunted, adjusting his grip on his shield. "Our objective is containment and core liquidation. Keep your eyes open and your comms clear. Mei, you take point on fluid movement—scout three paces ahead, flag high-threat entities, and don't get isolated."
"Understood, Captain," Mei said, her voice smooth and grounded.
The rift surged, launching a localized EMP wave that blew out the surrounding streetlights. The Ashfall Outskirts plunged into darkness, illuminated only by the violently pulsing tear ahead.
"Move in!" Shane roared.
Mei crossed the threshold first, diving straight through the swirling void light.
The temperature plummeted instantly. The smell of rust and rain was replaced by the suffocating stench of ozone, burned sulfur, and ancient stone. The environment inside wasn't a ruin—it was a shattered, floating continent suspended over a dark abyss, illuminated by dying, crimson stars.
A guttural roar echoed from the obsidian ridges ahead as void-corrupted entities began to materialise from the shadows.
Mei landed silently on the glassed stone, drawing her blades in a single, fluid motion. Behind her, Shane's heavy boots hit the ground with a thundering impact, his shield flashing bright as he blocked an incoming void projectile.
"Welcome to the abyss, team," Shane growled, his voice echoing in the vast, dead expanse. "Clear a path!"
Mei grinned, her silver eyes catching the crimson starlight. She dropped into a low sprint, driving forward into the horde.
The obsidian floor groaned beneath Team Blaze as they pushed through the crimson-lit ruins of the Gate.
"Front line holding!" Shane shouted, bracing his shield against a wave of void-beasts. "Keep moving toward the core chamber!"
Before Mei could sprint ahead to clear the ridge, a blinding flash of flashbang energy detonated directly above them.
BANG!
The sudden explosion of white light and high-frequency shockwaves blew through the cavern. Ryan stumbled back, clutching his eyes, while Joshua's gauntlets flickered and sputtered.
"AMBUSH!" Shane roared, driving his shield into the ground to create a protective barrier.
Out of the smoke, Shadow Squad struck with brutal, military synchronization.
Ryker dropped from a ledge fifty feet above, firing three heavy, armor-piercing rounds in mid-air. The high-caliber shots slammed into Shane's energy shield with bone-rattling thuds, forcing the Captain onto one knee under the sheer force.
"NOW!" Ethan's voice echoed through the static.
Jacob emerged from the shadows like a battering ram, his massive, dark-armored frame plowing straight into Joshua. Before Joshua could recalibrate his gauntlets, Jacob grabbed him by the shoulder harness and slammed him into an obsidian pillar, pinning him in place.
Mei drew both daggers, pivoting to assist, but a shadow flickered at her side.
Fei materialized from the grey mist, her curved blades sweeping downward in a razor-thin arc. Mei blocked the strike instinctively, metal clashing against metal in a shower of sparks.
"Told you they were soft," Fei hissed, pressing her weight into the lock. "You're fighting for a team that hesitates."
"They don't hesitate," Mei replied, her voice icy. She twisted her wrist, slipping beneath Fei's blade and driving an elbow into her ribs, forcing the Shadow assassin to step back.
Across the smoke-filled field, Ethan stepped out of the shadow of a shattered archway. He moved with cold, effortless precision, drawing a heavy, suppressed sidearm and leveling it directly at Captain Shane.
"Stand down, Captain," Ethan said calmly over the sound of crackling void energy. "The core belongs to Shadow Squad. You're outmatched, out-positioned, and your flank is completely compromised."
Shane spat blood onto the obsidian glass, his grip on his heavy shield tightening until the metal groaned. "We don't yield to scavengers, Ethan."
"It's not a negotiation," Ethan said, his finger resting on the trigger.
Mei stood between the two squads, her blades dripping with void-blood, her silver eyes darting between Ethan, Fei, and her new squadmates. The air grew stiflingly thin as the two elite teams locked into a lethal, zero-margin standstill.
