Chapter 23: The Ascent to the Black Crown Fortress

  • Next Chapter

The twelve leagues to the Black Crown Fortress were not a road; they were a meat grinder. The ash plains narrowed into the Obsidian Spine, a jagged mountain range of black volcanic glass and shattered stone. Above them, the crimson moons had merged into a bloated eclipse, staining the landscape in a sick red glow. For the first two leagues, the Dominion attacked in waves, but by the fourth, the beasts stopped trying to kill them and started trying to exhaust them.

Joshua wiped black blood from the rim of his great shield. "Ten leagues left. They're conserving their numbers now."

Fei, hovering along the high volcanic rocks while keeping her distance from Team Blaze, flicked black blood off her twin blades. She adjusted her grip, her dark Team Shadow jacket caught in the stale wind. "Meaning?"

"They attack whoever is already wounded, force us to spend mana, then retreat."

Mei looked across the wasteland. "That isn't the objective."

Joshua frowned. "What is?"

Mei crouched beside a set of ash-crossed claw marks, tracing their direction. The creatures had approached from three directions, herding them steadily east toward the mountains.

"They're herding us," Mei said.

Fei's expression hardened as she surveyed the terrain from her high perch. "Toward the fortress?"

"Toward the Ridge of Whispers."

Mei opened her system interface: SHADOW DOMINION TRACKING: ACTIVE | HOSTILE SIGNALS: 128 | DISTANCE TO BLACK CROWN FORTRESS: 10.2 LEAGUES.

"The Iron Cohort is waiting there."

Joshua's jaw tightened. "Malakor's personal guard? Level one hundred ten heavy legionnaires?"

Fei flexed her fingers around her daggers, her posture sharp and competitive. "Then Team Shadow will cut through them before your squad even gets a chance."

Mei shook her head. "Not head-on. They've chosen the terrain because they expect us to fight like soldiers."

Joshua understood. "And you don't?"

Mei drew one dagger and stepped into the ash. "I'm an assassin. I don't fight the battlefield they're offering me."

The Ridge of Whispers

A narrow canyon of volcanic glass stretched between two towering cliffs, where wind screamed like human voices. Hundreds of Dominion soldiers with heavy armor, long polearms, and anti-magic runes occupied the high ground.

At the center stood Commander Vane—the ruthless vanguard leader of Malakor's elite Iron Cohort. Towering over his Level 110 heavy legionnaires, Vane was a juggernaut encased in spiked obsidian armor, resting a massive warhammer against his shoulder.

Vane studied the approaching group—Mei, Joshua, and Fei—and smiled, revealing sharpened teeth. "Raise the barriers."

Crimson runes ignited along both canyon walls, spreading a lattice of anti-shadow energy that stripped away every natural shadow within fifty meters. Vane laughed, his voice booming through the pass. "Let's see you hide now, little assassin!"

Mei stopped at the entrance, her eyes instantly analyzing Vane's setup: three anti-shadow suppression pylons, two heavy shield lines, and a centralized command group. The soldiers were protecting the pylons, which meant the pylons were controlling the suppression field.

She looked at Joshua. "Can your shield crack the ground?"

"Ask a better question."

"Can you make them lose their footing?"

"Now that's a question I can answer."

Mei glanced up at Fei, who was ghosting along the top ledge of the canyon wall, operating with pure Team Shadow detachment. "Take the right pylon."

"Don't command me, Blaze," Fei sneered, though her blades flared dark purple as she lunged toward the target anyway.

"And you?" Joshua asked Mei.

"I'll take their command structure."

Joshua raised his shield. "Then I'll make them look at me."

Mei disappeared.

Skill Activated: Shadow Inversion. Finding no natural shadow on the ground due to Vane's suppression grid, she slipped into the tight darkness beneath a lieutenant's armor and emerged inside his defensive perimeter. Her dagger drove beneath his helmet in one precise strike, dropping him silently. She moved like a ghost, taking down another lieutenant and a signal officer before the Cohort could react.

Vane realized his ranks were thin at the center. "She isn't attacking the front line! She's gutting the command structure!" He roared, raising his warhammer. "Close ranks on me!"

The legionnaires tried, but Joshua hit the ground first.

Skill Activated: Aegis Impact — Earthquake. His greatshield slammed into the basalt, cracking the canyon floor. The heavy legionnaires staggered as their carefully aligned formation collapsed, their heavy plate armor suddenly becoming a death trap.

Across the canyon, Fei moved through the broken lines. Skill Activated: Flashblade Symphony. Operating with ruthless precision, she bypassed armored chests entirely, targeting joints: knees, elbows, weapon grips, and neck seals.

Vane roared, charging Mei directly. His massive obsidian warhammer smashed into the ground where she had stood a second earlier, exploding volcanic stone in all directions. Mei rolled behind a basalt pillar, her assassin's mind hyper-focusing on Vane's movements.

His weapon hits with extreme force, but the weight drags his recovery time down. Every time he prepares an overhead strike, he plants his left foot heavily—a three-second window before the swing completes.

When Vane swung again, Mei slipped inside the hammer's arc, but Vane anticipated the close push; his armored knee drove hard into her ribs, launching her across the canyon into the stone wall.

Pain flashed through her side as she hit the ground hard, spitting blood.

Vane laughed, stepping over the rubble. "Not so untouchable now, are you?"

Mei pushed herself upright, running a hand over her bruised ribs. "No. But now I have your timing."

Vane charged again. This time, Mei didn't retreat; she stepped straight into his threat zone. As the massive hammer came down, she slipped beneath the arc. The moment his left foot planted to bear the weight, her shadow wrapped around his ankle, buckling his knee.

Joshua's shield struck the warhammer from behind, sending the massive weapon flying from Vane's grip. Fei blurred in from the high ridge, her twin blades crossing against his shoulder joints to force his heavy arms downward before backflipping clear.

Disarmed and pinned, the commander of the Iron Cohort dropped to his knees. Mei stepped directly in front of him.

Vane glared at her through his visor. "You think killing me changes anything?"

"No." Mei placed her dagger against the damaged seam beneath his breastplate. "You were never the problem."

"Then what are you—"

"I'm coming for the man who sent you."

She drove her blade straight into the exposed seam. Heartseeker Strike. Dark energy detonated inside Vane's armor. His body stiffened, cracks of black light breaking through his spiked plate, before his entire form collapsed into ash.

Mei turned toward the remaining heavy legionnaires. "Run."

Nobody moved.

She raised her bloodied blade. "Go tell Malakor exactly what happened to his Commander."

That broke them, and the survivors scattered into the mountains.

Fei landed lightly on a nearby boulder, wiping black blood from her cheek as she sheathed her daggers. "You let them escape."

"They'll carry the message faster than we can."

Joshua lowered his shield. "And the message is?"

Mei looked toward the fortress. "I'm coming."

The Vault of the Ancients

Nine leagues later, the Black Crown Fortress rose above them, part fortress and part tomb carved directly into the mountain. Black towers pierced the crimson sky, ancient chains descended from the highest spires, and the main gates stood open without a single guard.

Joshua frowned. "I don't like that."

"Neither do I." Mei studied the fortress before noticing an eastern wall drainage channel—too narrow for an army, but perfect for an assassin. "There."

Fei followed her gaze, her posture wary and sharp. "You think that's an entrance?"

"I think it's the entrance they don't want us using."

Joshua sighed. "That's somehow worse."

The tunnel beneath the fortress was freezing. Ancient carvings covered the walls: armies kneeling before a crowned figure, sovereigns chained beneath enormous spheres, and finally, a faceless woman standing alone before a black crystal. Mei stopped, her face going pale. Fei whispered her name. "Mei."

"I know."

The Heart of the Apocalypse pulsed inside Mei's inventory as a system window appeared: ARCHITECTURAL RECORD DETECTED | VOID HEART CONTAINMENT FACILITY | PRIMARY FUNCTION: ETERNAL SEAL STORAGE.

Joshua stared at the inscription. "You said the Eternal Seal was a person."

"It is." Mei touched the carving, her eyes moving across the rows of chained figures. "They weren't creating the Seal here. They were keeping previous hosts here."

Fei swallowed, her cold composure slipping for a fraction of a second. "How many?"

Mei didn't answer.

A metallic sound echoed through the tunnel. Joshua raised his shield, Fei drew her twin daggers, and Mei held up one hand. "Wait."

She listened. One set of footsteps. Slow. Heavy. But there were no footprints.

Mei's eyes narrowed. "It's beneath us."

The floor exploded as a black-armored guardian burst through the stone. Joshua barely raised his shield in time, sliding backward from the impact. Fei attacked immediately, her blades striking the guardian's chest in a flurry of dark energy, but to little effect. Mei watched as the guardian changed its stance, copying Joshua's shield position, then Fei's footwork, then Mei's own posture.

Joshua blocked another strike. "Mei!"

"I see it. It's recording us." Mei stepped backward. "Everyone change your fighting style. Stop giving it clean data."

Fei reversed her grip, Joshua lowered his shield, and Mei adopted an unfamiliar stance. The guardian hesitated. That was enough. Mei moved, and when the guardian copied her first step, she abruptly changed direction, kicked the back of its knee, and drove her dagger into the shoulder seam.

"Joshua!"

Joshua charged, his greatshield smashing into the guardian's chest. Fei struck from the opposite side, her blades splitting the damaged plating to reveal a red crystal inside. Mei drove her second dagger straight through it, and the guardian froze before collapsing.

ARCHITECTURAL GUARDIAN DESTROYED | COMBAT DATA: INCOMPLETE | SUBJECT MEI: PATTERN UNRESOLVED

Joshua stared at the system. "That's good, right?"

Mei pulled her dagger free. "Very."

Fei looked deeper into the dark tunnel. "What did it learn?"

Mei stared at the dead guardian. "Enough to know Malakor has been studying us, but not enough to know me."

The Heart of the Void

The tunnel opened into a vast underground chamber where thousands of chains surrounded a circular platform. At its center floated a massive black crystal, behind which stood Lord Malakor and dozens of Dominion elites.

Malakor smiled. "So the Eternal Seal finally returns."

Mei drew both daggers. "I've never been here."

"No, but you have."

The crystal pulsed, and a voice emerged from it—Mei's own voice: "Run, Mei."

Her breath caught. That was the memory of her first death, the moment before she became the Eternal Seal.

Malakor watched her carefully. "Now you understand. You want me alive because you can't activate the Seal without me."

"Correct. And you think I'll willingly sacrifice myself again."

"I know you will."

Mei studied the room with assassin's instincts. The chains weren't all connected to the crystal; some anchored to the walls, others to the platform, and three massive chains ran beneath the floor. It was a containment system—a prison, not a weapon.

She pointed toward the chains. "You don't control the Void Heart. You've mistaken containment for control. You're afraid of it."

Silence stretched across the room before Malakor raised his hand. "Kill everyone except Mei."

The chamber erupted. Mei moved toward the chains, ignoring Malakor as soldiers tried to intercept her. Joshua became an immovable wall, Fei sliced through a wave of attackers on the left flank with Team Shadow precision, and Captain Shane Williams with the remaining Blaze fighters formed a heavy defensive perimeter.

Mei reached the first chain and struck it, the metal screaming.

Malakor charged, his sword shattering the platform behind her. He was much stronger than Vane had been, but Mei studied his tells: his sword was too heavy for rapid recovery, his left shoulder was lower from an old injury, and his stance favored his left leg. He wanted to force her near the Void Heart and onto the center of the platform. She wouldn't give him the satisfaction.

When Malakor swung, Mei slipped inside the blade, cutting his wrist. He reversed his sword, striking with his elbow and catching her ribs with his knee. Pain exploded through her side, and she stumbled.

Joshua's shield slammed into him, knocking Malakor sideways. "She's not fighting you alone!"

Fei cut through the armor at his shoulder, and Shane drove him backward with a heavy tactical strike.

Mei saw the opening. "Now!"

The team attacked together, forcing Malakor's sword wide and driving him back. Mei stepped into the opening and drove her dagger into his chest. Heartseeker Strike. Dark energy detonated inside his armor, but he didn't fall. He looked down at the blade, then back at Mei, and grabbed her wrist. "You still don't understand. You are the key."

The chains ignited. The black crystal opened, and darkness exploded across the chamber. Mei was ripped off her feet, rising toward the Void Heart.

Joshua caught her hand. Fei lunged and grabbed her other arm. Shane grabbed Joshua, and the rest of Blaze formed a human chain behind them.

Malakor laughed. "You cannot stop it!"

Mei looked at the crystal, then at the people holding her, and finally understood what the Architect had never considered. The Eternal Seal had always been built around one sacrifice, one soul carrying the burden alone. But the Seal didn't require one soul; it required an anchor strong enough to resist the Void Heart. She didn't need to become the prison—she could make the people beside her part of the lock.

"Joshua!"

"I'm here!"

"Fei!"

"I'm not letting go!" Fei yelled back, her grip like iron.

"Shane!"

"Do it!" Shane bellowed.

Mei opened her Shadow Dominion. Darkness surged through her, tearing through every nerve in her body with agonizing pain. She screamed, but she didn't let go, redirecting the Void Heart's energy through the network of living anchors around her.

The chains began to glow, locking into place one by one.

Malakor's smile vanished. "No."

"Yes," Mei's eyes hardened. "I'm destroying your control over it."

She drove the Heart of the Apocalypse into the center of the platform. The chamber shook as the Void Heart resisted, flooding her mind with memories of Joshua dying, Fei betraying her, Shane falling, her first death, and the lonely silence afterward. The Void Heart offered the same bargain: sacrifice yourself, save everyone.

Mei closed her eyes. "I already chose that ending. This time, I choose to live."

She opened her eyes, and the Shadow Dominion expanded. Joshua shouted as the force nearly tore his arm from its socket, and Fei cried out in pain but refused to release her. The chains snapped tight, the black crystal fractured, and Malakor screamed as a crack spread across the surface.

Mei pushed harder. The Void Heart shattered.

A New Horizon

A wave of black energy erupted through the fortress, throwing Malakor across the chamber and causing Dominion soldiers to drop their weapons. Above them, the fortress began collapsing.

"MOVE!" Mei shouted.

Everyone ran as the ceiling split apart. Joshua dragged a wounded Hunter beneath an archway, Fei pulled another from falling debris, Shane carried an injured fighter over his shoulder, and Mei ran last to ensure everyone escaped.

The final support collapsed behind them, and they burst from the fortress just as the Black Crown shattered. The mountain split, the ancient chains snapped, and a wave of darkness rolled across the sky before dissolving into absolute silence.

The crimson moons disappeared, the red clouds dissolved, and across the wasteland, Dungeon Gates closed one after another. Sovereigns vanished, dungeon-born creatures collapsed into ash, and the oppressive pressure that had hung over the world for years finally vanished.

Mei stood beneath a clearing sky, waiting for the system. Nothing happened—no quest, no warning, no command. For the first time in her life, there was no voice telling her what came next.

Joshua approached, his greatshield cracked nearly in half. "You alive?"

"Apparently."

He laughed. "Good enough for me."

Fei approached more slowly, her dark Team Shadow gear damaged and her face streaked with blood and ash. She stopped several feet away, keeping a deliberate space between herself and Team Blaze. "I know you still don't forgive me."

"I don't."

"I don't expect you to."

"But you stayed."

Fei's eyes filled with rare emotion. "So did you."

Mei looked toward the horizon, where the first sunlight in years broke through the clouds, spreading gold across the ruined landscape. She remembered her first life—the girl turned into a weapon, the people she failed to save, the betrayal, and the moment she died believing nobody would remember her. That girl was gone, but she had not been erased. She had survived.

Joshua stepped beside her. "So what now?"

Mei looked at the ruined world. "Now we rebuild."

"And after that?"

Mei glanced at him. "Then we figure out what comes next."

Shane called from behind them, "Are you three coming?"

Mei turned. The surviving members of Blaze were already moving toward the valley, where people were emerging from shelters and the wounded were being carried to temporary camps. For the first time, there were no monsters waiting beyond the horizon, no dungeon gates, no Sovereigns, and no orders. Just survivors.

Mei slipped her daggers into their sheaths. She had spent one lifetime dying for the world; this time, she would live in it. She took one step forward, then another, and when she walked away from the ruins of Black Crown Fortress, she didn't look back. The apocalypse had taken almost everything from her, but it had failed to take the one thing she had fought hardest to reclaim: her future.
