Reborn in the 80s and Remarrying an Officer, Let the Ungrateful Cry!
Chapter 399: What Took You So Long?
At that moment, Fu Mingxue felt a little regretful—she should have installed a small electric motor on the tricycle.
That way, it would have been much faster.
"Mom, hold on tight."
"Don’t worry, just ride fast!"
Thankfully, she had used the straps to secure them, one in the front and one on her back.
The two children were also shielded from the wind.
Their heads had been covered with a large scarf.
After Fu Mingxue confirmed everything was secure, she turned the tricycle’s handlebars.
The tricycle instantly shot forward a good distance.
The main gate to the military base was closed at this hour.
But a sentry was on duty.
Fu Mingxue was stopped.
She quickly told the soldier, "My two children have a high fever. I’m taking them to the hospital."
Just as the sentry was about to let her pass, a car suddenly returned to the gate.
The car stopped, and the person who got out was Director Xie.
He was very surprised to see Fu Mingxue. "Fu Mingxue, where are you off to?"
He then noticed Mrs. Fu to the side, holding one child in her arms and carrying another on her back.
He was even more shocked. "What’s wrong with the two children?"
Fu Mingxue immediately said, "They’re sick, with high fevers. We’re taking them to the hospital."
Director Xie heard that both children were sick and running high fevers.
He immediately said, "Don’t ride your tricycle. Quick, get in the car. I’ll take you to the hospital."
Fu Mingxue didn’t refuse. After all, a car was obviously better than a tricycle.
She immediately thanked Director Xie. "Thank you!"
Then she turned her head and shouted to Mrs. Fu, "Mom, get in the car!"
She first untied the child from Mrs. Fu’s back, held them, and climbed into the car.
Mrs. Fu held the other child.
Director Xie quickly returned to the driver’s seat.
He turned the car around and drove off toward the military hospital—
The car had just stopped at the military hospital.
Fu Mingxue jumped out of the car, holding one of the children.
Mrs. Fu got out from the other side, holding the other child.
"Doctor! Doctor! My children have high fevers! Please, come take a look at them—"
Like any mother would be, Fu Mingxue was extremely worried.
After all, high fevers in children were very dangerous in those days; they could easily cause brain damage.
Or lead to other complications.
As luck would have it, Doctor Xie happened to be passing by.
She was also very surprised to see Fu Mingxue.
"What’s wrong with the children?"
"They have persistent high fevers. Doctor Xie, please, could you examine my two children quickly?"
Doctor Xie glanced at the children’s flushed faces and reached out a hand to feel their skin—sure enough, they were burning hot.
Her brow furrowed at once, and her expression showed a trace of displeasure.
"Why wait until they’re burning up like this to come to the hospital? Why didn’t you come earlier? Don’t you know that a fever this high can cause damage to the brain and other organs?"
Fu Mingxue was about to speak when Mrs. Fu, standing beside her, quickly interjected:
"We already came to the hospital during the day. Their temperatures went down, so we went home. Then, around 8:30 tonight, their fevers suddenly shot up again. My daughter was working the night shift at the factory and just got off."
She had to explain things for her daughter.
After all, Director Xie was present.
’If I don’t explain, won’t people think my daughter—the stepmother—is neglecting the children?’
Doctor Xie didn’t say anything more and told the two of them to take the children to the emergency room first.
"Put them here!"
Fu Mingxue and Mrs. Fu immediately placed the children on the hospital beds.
They didn’t leave, but stood off to the side.
As Doctor Xie examined the two children, she asked:
"Tell me about the children’s condition during the day."
As soon as she heard this, Mrs. Fu immediately recounted the children’s condition during the day and evening, including what shots they had been given at the hospital and what medicine had been prescribed.
