Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man
Chapter 727 - 251: Watch Me Stab Him to Death
When Grandma Gao saw that Xu Jiali wasn’t saying anything, she continued to twist the knife. "My grandson is going to marry Qiao Wei. Don’t even think about using the Qiao Family to ruin their engagement."
In terms of status, Xu Jiali and Qiao Wei were as different as clouds and mud.
Xu Jiali wanted to sit up, but she didn’t have the strength. Seeing this, Nurse Li stepped forward, carefully helped Xu Jiali sit up, and placed a pillow behind her back.
"Sister Li, thank you," Xu Jiali said.
"Don’t mention it. This is my job," Nurse Li said, looking at Xu Jiali with pity.
Xu Jiali looked at Grandma Gao, who was sitting on the floor. She wanted to say a few cutting remarks, but on second thought, she felt it was unnecessary. She had given up on Gao Qiang, so there was no point in a verbal spat. "Congratulations."
Grandma Gao was stunned. Xu Jiali was being so sensible that she didn’t know what to say.
"You wouldn’t live long enough to ruin it anyway," Grandma Gao snorted.
"Old Madam Gao, please leave. The patient needs to rest," Nurse Li ordered her out.
Grandma Gao glared at Nurse Li. She had already hit and cursed, venting her anger. Grandma Gao got up, brushed off the non-existent dust from her clothes, and looked down her nose at Xu Jiali.
"Serves you right for getting stomach cancer." After saying that, Grandma Gao left the room.
The words "stomach cancer" echoed in Xu Jiali’s ears. Her already pale face turned even more ashen.
"Jiali, don’t listen to her nonsense. She’s just cursing you," Nurse Li comforted her, though she sounded unconvincing.
Xu Jiali gave Nurse Li a wan smile. "Sister Li, I’m fine."
Nurse Li opened her mouth to speak but then stopped. She wasn’t good at comforting people, and she found it hard to utter a white lie.
"Jiali." Dean Zhang came into the hospital room and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Xu Jiali was awake.
Dean Zhang examined Xu Jiali. Then, Nurse Li gave a few instructions to the junior nurse taking care of Xu Jiali before pulling Dean Zhang out of the room. She told him about Old Madam Gao causing a scene in the room.
After hearing everything, Dean Zhang’s expression became grave.
He went to Qin Xiang’s room to get Jie Jingchen and Qin Mei, relaying Nurse Li’s words to them verbatim. Jie Jingchen’s cold eyes filled with frost, but Qin Mei showed no emotion.
"Xiao Mei, what should we do now?" Dean Zhang asked Qin Mei.
"Do what needs to be done," Qin Mei said with a shrug.
"Does Grandma know?" Jie Jingchen asked.
"I haven’t had a chance to tell her yet," Dean Zhang replied.
"Let’s go. We’ll discuss it with Grandma," Jie Jingchen said.
"Okay," Dean Zhang agreed.
Jie Jingchen saw Qin Mei sitting motionlessly on the sofa and raised an eyebrow. "Meimei."
Qin Mei looked up and shot Jie Jingchen a glance. "You guys go. I won’t get involved. Just tell me the result when you’re done."
Dean Zhang tried to persuade her. "Xiao Mei, I think..."
"Uncle Zhang, let’s go," Jie Jingchen interrupted Dean Zhang.
"But..."
"Let’s go." Jie Jingchen’s tone was firm, and Dean Zhang sighed helplessly.
After the two left the room, Qin Xiang looked at his little sister. "Sis, I think you should go and discuss it with them."
"The process doesn’t matter, only the result." Qin Mei leaned back lazily against the sofa. ’If Grandma doesn’t agree to the surgery, there’s nothing I can do anyway.’
"It’s the participation that counts," Qin Xiang reminded her. "A family is a family because they discuss things together. They’re asking you to join them because they see you as one of them. If they always discuss things without you, you’ll be ostracized by your in-laws. No matter how deep a couple’s love is, it will eventually end in separation if that happens."
Qin Mei rolled her eyes at Qin Xiang and decided to ignore him.
"Sis," Qin Xiang began, still trying to persuade her.
Qin Mei closed her eyes to rest.
Seeing this, Qin Xiang gave a helpless laugh. He changed the subject and cursed with a sense of shared indignation, "The Gao Family are really shameless. Can’t they just part on good terms? Why did they have to maliciously provoke Jing Si’s aunt? Hey, Sis, where are you going?"
"That Old Mrs. Gao stabbed Xu Jiali in the heart, so I’ll go stab her grandson. We’ll see if I don’t stab him to death." Qin Mei had also switched into her protective mode.
Qin Xiang lay on his stomach on the hospital bed. His injuries made it inconvenient for him to move, or else he would have gone to help his sister.
Qin Mei first went to the head nurse and asked for the largest-sized needle and syringe. Dean Zhang had given prior instructions that no matter what Qin Mei asked for, she was to be given it.
Dressed in a white coat, wearing a mask, and carrying a medical tray, no one would have believed Qin Mei if she said she wasn’t a doctor at the hospital.
Qin Mei arrived at Gao Qiang’s room. Grandma Gao was still gloating to Gao Qiang, making a bunch of empty promises.
Grandma Gao had even set a wedding date for Gao Qiang and Qiao Wei. Qin Mei was flabbergasted. ’If I had arrived any later,’ she thought, ’the old hag would have probably already picked out names for their children.’
"Mom." Mrs. Gao saw Qin Mei enter and spoke up to alert Grandma Gao.
Grandma Gao shot Mrs. Gao a glare. "What are you afraid of? Once your son’s marriage to Qiao Wei is settled, it’ll be in the papers soon enough. By then, everyone in Xiangjiang will know."
"Mom," Mrs. Gao said helplessly. ’Nothing’s even been confirmed yet.’
At first, she had hoped her son would get back together with Xu Jiali, but after learning Xu Jiali had a terminal illness, she gave up on the idea completely.
Her son marrying Qiao Wei, the Gao family forging ties with the Governor Mansion... Mrs. Gao had no confidence in that.
"Time for your shot," Qin Mei said, deliberately roughing up her voice so Grandma Gao wouldn’t recognize it.
Gao Qiang immediately lay on his side. Grandma Gao helped pull his pants down a little. Qin Mei placed the medical tray on the cabinet, picked up the syringe and needle, and under the watchful eyes of Grandma Gao and Mrs. Gao, filled the syringe with medicine. She then used forceps to pick up a small cotton ball and dipped it in alcohol.
"Why are that syringe and needle so big?" Mrs. Gao couldn’t help but ask.
"Big? It’s not big at all," Qin Mei said.
"Is that needle even for humans?" Grandma Gao also questioned. The syringe and needle looked more like something used on livestock.
"Old Madam Gao, what are you saying? If it’s not for a person, is it for a pig?" Qin Mei was, in fact, treating Gao Qiang like a pig.
Grandma Gao was left speechless. Gao Qiang couldn’t help but turn his head to look. He hadn’t realized before, but one glance made him jump, and his skin tensed up.
That syringe, that needle... they were just too big.
"Get a smaller one," Gao Qiang said. ’A shot from that thing is bound to hurt.’
"Different people... Different illnesses call for different needles." Qin Mei had wanted to say, ’Different people get different needles,’ but afraid they would see through her, she quickly corrected herself.
"I’m not sick, I was beaten up," Gao Qiang said, staring at the syringe in Qin Mei’s hand. He couldn’t suppress his fear, especially of that needle.
"Is there a difference?" Qin Mei shot him a cold glance, then looked at him with a beaming smile and said formulaically, "In my eyes, you are all patients."
’That may be so, but there were still differences between patients,’ Gao Qiang thought. ’I really don’t need this kind of syringe. This isn’t for humans; it’s for pigs!’
Especially when she smiled like that, Gao Qiang felt a chill run down his spine.
"You silly child, so grown up and still afraid of a shot," Grandma Gao said, slapping her grandson on the back in displeasure.
"Granny, look at this needle! Aren’t you scared?" Gao Qiang retorted, unconvinced.
"Just grit your teeth and bear it," Mrs. Gao also chimed in. ’When you’re sick, you have to take medicine and get shots. That’s normal. It’s just that this syringe is a bit big, and it looks quite scary.’
"Don’t worry, my shots don’t hurt," Qin Mei said, approaching Gao Qiang with the syringe raised.
Gao Qiang flinched and glared at Qin Mei. ’Don’t you come near me!’
"Don’t be scared. She said it won’t hurt," Grandma Gao soothed.
"Granny, look how huge this needle is!" Gao Qiang was skeptical. ’A shot from that thing is bound to hurt.’
"Just don’t look at it, then." Grandma Gao pushed Gao Qiang’s head to the side and gave Qin Mei a meaningful look.
Without disinfecting the area, Qin Mei’s hand moved, and the needle fell, plunging cleanly in.
"..." Grandma Gao.
’That was a little too efficient,’ she thought. ’I feel like a step was missed.’
"AHH!" Gao Qiang let out a bloodcurdling scream.
Qin Mei immediately pulled the needle out. Grandma Gao was completely baffled. ’What was that about?’
"Sorry, I forgot to disinfect," Qin Mei said apologetically, but her sharp eyes held the thrill of revenge.
"You..." Gao Qiang had just started to speak when Qin Mei jabbed a silver needle into him, silencing him.
