Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 48:The Broken Covenant
Chapter 48: Chapter 48:The Broken Covenant
The darkness inside the hidden valley felt different after the three knocks.
Ash remained near the entrance of the shelter, staring into the darkness beyond the trees.
The fire had died several minutes ago, yet none of them had bothered to relight it. The cold should have been biting through his fur, but he barely noticed it anymore.
His attention remained fixed on the mountains, where the snow had stopped falling and an unnatural stillness had settled over the valley.
Aren stood beside him, his pale eyes reflecting the faint blue glow coming from the ground beneath their paws.
Elder Kael remained behind them, completely motionless.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then another vibration traveled through the stone.
It was subtle this time, almost like a distant heartbeat passing through the mountain itself. Snow slipped from the branches above them and landed softly on the ground, but the trees did not move with the wind.
Kael finally broke the silence.
"We cannot stay here."
Ash turned toward him.
"Where are we going?"
Kael looked toward the far end of the valley.
"There is a chamber beneath this place."
Aren immediately looked at him.
"You never told me about a chamber."
Kael’s expression remained serious.
"Because you were not supposed to know."
Aren’s ears lowered.
"I thought you said you wanted someone to remember."
"I do."
Kael’s gaze moved toward the glowing crack in the stone.
"But remembering and understanding are not the same thing."
Ash watched the old Silver Lynx carefully.
Kael looked exhausted, but there was something else behind his expression. He had spent years protecting a secret, and whatever had awakened beneath the valley had finally made that secret impossible to keep.
"How do we reach the chamber?" Ash asked.
Kael turned toward an old stone wall.
He walked slowly across the valley and stopped before what appeared to be an ordinary section of rock. Several faded claw marks were visible near the base, almost completely hidden beneath moss and ice.
Kael pressed his paw against the center of the wall.
Nothing happened.
Then he pushed one particular stone inward.
A deep clicking sound echoed through the valley.
The wall shifted.
A narrow opening appeared.
Cold air flowed out of the darkness, carrying a strange scent that Ash couldn’t identify. It smelled like old stone, frozen earth, and something metallic that reminded him of the ancient ruins beneath Moonveil.
Aren stared into the passage.
"You knew this was here."
Kael nodded.
"My tribe’s elders knew."
"And you never told me?"
Kael looked at him.
"You were a child when you escaped."
Aren’s expression tightened.
"I was old enough to remember."
Kael’s damaged eye softened.
"You were old enough to suffer. That was enough."
Aren looked away.
Ash understood the meaning behind the words.
Aren had already carried more memories than anyone his age should have been forced to carry.
Kael entered the passage first.
Ash followed.
Aren remained behind for a moment before eventually stepping inside.
The entrance closed behind them with a heavy stone sound.
They descended for several minutes.
The passage seemed to have been carved directly through the mountain, but unlike the natural tunnels Ash had encountered before, these walls were too smooth to be ordinary. Strange symbols had been carved into them at regular intervals.
Some depicted wolves.
Others showed lynxes, bears and eagles.
But several symbols were unfamiliar.
Ash stopped beside one.
It showed four animals standing around a circular shape.
"What does this mean?"
Kael glanced at it.
"The Covenant."
Aren looked at the carving.
"Why have I never seen this symbol before?"
"Because your elders stopped teaching it."
"Why?"
Kael continued walking.
"Because the covenant failed."
Those words remained with Ash as they continued deeper.
Eventually the passage widened.
A massive chamber opened before them.
Ash stopped at the entrance.
The walls were covered in paintings.
Unlike the ruins they had previously discovered, these paintings were remarkably preserved. Their colors had faded with age, but the images remained visible beneath the thin layer of dust covering the stone.
A large celestial tree dominated the central wall.
Beneath it stood four figures.
A Blackfang wolf.
A Silver Lynx.
An enormous Ice Bear.
And a Great Eagle with its wings spread wide.
They were facing another figure.
The Guardian.
Ash immediately recognized the shape from the previous ruins.
But something was different.
This time, the Guardian was not standing in opposition to them.
It stood behind a massive circular seal carved into the ground.
Ash moved closer.
"What is that?"
Kael looked at the painting.
"The reason our ancestors came together."
Ash studied the image.
Something appeared to be held between the four leaders.
At first, he assumed it was a weapon.
But as he moved closer, he realized it looked more like a small stone.
A black stone.
His relic suddenly became warm.
Ash stepped backward.
Kael noticed.
"You see it now."
Ash touched the relic.
"That’s the same shape."
Kael nodded.
Aren looked between them.
"What was offered?"
Kael took a slow breath.
"Not a sacrifice."
He walked toward the painting.
"It was a promise."
Ash frowned.
"What kind of promise?"
Kael looked toward the circular seal depicted beneath the Guardian.
"The four bloodlines promised that none of them would enter the sacred territory unless the Guardian called them."
Aren’s eyes widened.
"And in return?"
"The Guardian would protect the mountain."
Ash looked at the enormous seal.
"Protect it from what?"
Kael didn’t answer.
Instead, he moved toward another wall.
This painting was darker.
The four species were shown together again, but this time the circular seal beneath the Guardian was cracked.
The Blackfang stood on one side.
The Silver Lynx stood opposite it.
The Ice Bear had turned away.
The Great Eagle was flying toward the sky.
The alliance was broken.
Ash felt an uneasy pressure building inside his chest.
"That is when the covenant failed."
Kael nodded.
"The first generation understood the importance of the promise. Their descendants did not."
Aren looked at him.
"What happened?"
Kael remained silent.
Ash noticed an inscription beneath the painting.
Most of it had been damaged by time, but a few symbols remained.
His relic pulsed.
The system appeared.
[Ancient Language Detected.]
[Attempting translation.]
Ash watched the glowing text form before him.
[The Seal shall remain intact as long as the Four Bloodlines remain united.]
His eyes widened.
"The four bloodlines were part of the seal."
Kael nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Ash looked back at the painting.
"So the alliance wasn’t only about protecting each other."
"No."
Kael’s voice became heavy.
"They were protecting something much more important."
Aren stared at the enormous circular seal.
"What was beneath it?"
Kael turned toward him.
"I don’t know."
Aren’s expression hardened.
"You do."
"I know what my elders told me."
"Then tell me."
Kael looked away.
"My elders said the thing beneath the mountain was not meant to be awakened."
Aren stepped closer.
"That’s not an answer."
"No."
Kael looked at him.
"It’s a warning."
Aren’s expression softened slightly.
He seemed to understand that Kael was not deliberately withholding information to hurt him.
Kael had simply spent too many years living with fear.
Ash turned toward another section of the wall.
There was a long crack running through the painting.
Someone had deliberately scratched away part of the inscription.
Ash crouched.
"This was damaged."
Kael’s expression changed.
"Yes."
"Recently?"
"No."
Kael approached the wall.
"Long ago."
Ash studied the marks.
"They were trying to hide something."
Kael nodded.
"The oldest elders knew what was written here."
"What did it say?"
Kael remained silent.
Aren looked at him.
"Kael."
The old Silver Lynx finally closed his eyes.
"The one who broke the covenant was not a Blackfang."
Aren froze.
Ash looked at Kael.
"What?"
Kael opened his eyes.
"It was one of ours."
The chamber became silent.
Aren stared at him.
"You’re saying a Silver Lynx broke the covenant?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Kael’s gaze moved toward the damaged inscription.
"Because he believed the Guardian was lying."
Ash frowned.
"Lying about what?"
"About what it was protecting."
Aren stepped closer.
"Did he enter the sacred territory?"
Kael nodded.
"He believed the ancient agreement was nothing more than a way for the Guardian to keep the four bloodlines away from the mountain."
"What did he find?"
Kael’s voice became quieter.
"We don’t know."
Ash looked at him.
"You don’t know?"
"The elder disappeared."
Aren’s ears lowered.
"Then how do you know he broke the covenant?"
"Because the mountain changed after he entered."
Kael looked toward the ceiling.
"The animals fled. The ground shook. The ancient lights appeared. The Guardian disappeared from the northern territory."
Ash remembered the strange lights he had seen.
"The First Awakening."
Kael nodded.
"What your people call the First Awakening may have been the consequence of the covenant being broken."
Aren looked at the paintings again.
"So the Guardian didn’t awaken because the Dreadborn came."
"No."
Kael shook his head.
"The Guardian may have awakened because the seal was already failing."
Ash felt a cold realization settle over him.
The ancient stories had always presented the Guardian as something that appeared during a great crisis.
Perhaps that wasn’t true.
Perhaps the crisis had happened because the Guardian was forced to awaken.
Ash looked at his relic.
"Then what happened to the four bloodlines?"
Kael’s expression became sad.
"The Blackfangs blamed the Silver Lynx."
Aren lowered his head.
"The Silver Lynx blamed the Blackfangs."
"The Ice Bears withdrew from the conflict."
"The Great Eagles disappeared into the mountains."
"And the covenant was forgotten."
Ash stared at the ancient paintings.
Four bloodlines.
One promise.
One mistake.
And centuries of distrust.
He suddenly understood why Aren’s tribe had feared the Blackfangs.
The hatred between their species had not begun naturally.
It had been inherited.
Passed from one generation to another until nobody remembered what had started it.
Ash looked at Aren.
Aren was staring at the image of the ancient Silver Lynx leader.
His expression was difficult to read.
Ash moved beside him.
"Your ancestors weren’t monsters."
Aren didn’t respond.
Ash continued quietly.
"They were afraid."
Aren looked at him.
"And fear can make people do terrible things."
Aren’s eyes lowered.
"I used to hate the Blackfangs."
Ash remained silent.
"I thought your kind had destroyed everything."
He touched the broken pendant around his neck.
"Then you saved me."
Ash looked at him.
"I don’t know what happened between our ancestors."
Aren looked toward the ancient painting.
"But I don’t want to inherit their hatred."
For a moment, the ancient chamber felt peaceful.
Then the ground shook.
A deep vibration traveled through the stone.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Kael’s ears immediately lifted.
"Someone is here."
Ash looked toward the passage.
"Who?"
Kael’s expression hardened.
"The Dreadborn."
