Chapter 47: Chapter 47:The Elder in the Hidden Valley

The three of them remained inside the hidden valley as the evening darkness slowly settled over the mountains.

Kael led them toward one of the larger stone shelters near the center of the valley. Unlike the abandoned structures surrounding it, this one had clearly been maintained.

Dry branches were stacked beside the entrance, herbs hung from the ceiling, and a small fire burned inside a shallow stone pit.

Ash noticed that Kael had prepared everything for survival alone.

There were enough supplies for one animal.

Not a tribe.

Not a family.

One survivor.

Aren sat near the entrance while Ash remained opposite Kael.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Eventually Aren asked the question that had been waiting inside him for years.

"What happened to them?"

Kael lowered his head.

"The tribe?"

Aren nodded.

Kael stared into the fire.

"They didn’t disappear in one night."

His voice was quiet.

"They disappeared one by one."

Aren’s ears lowered.

Kael continued.

"When the strange lights began appearing beneath the northern mountains, our elders knew something had changed. Animals abandoned their territories. Rivers froze without reason. The ground began trembling even when there were no storms."

Ash listened carefully.

It sounded familiar.

He had seen the same signs around Moonveil.

Kael looked toward the entrance.

"We had old stories about that place. Stories that most young Silver Lynx considered superstition."

"What stories?" Ash asked.

Kael looked directly at him.

"The mountains were never empty."

Ash remained silent.

Kael continued.

"Long before your Blackfang Pack settled these lands, long before my tribe existed, there were creatures who guarded the mountains. They weren’t ordinary animals. They were part of something older."

"The Guardian," Ash said.

Kael’s expression tightened.

"You know that name."

"We found the ruins."

Aren looked toward Ash.

Kael slowly nodded.

"Then you already know more than you should."

He reached beneath a layer of fur around his neck and pulled out an old piece of carved bone.

The symbol on it was almost identical to the one on Aren’s broken pendant.

Ash leaned closer.

"That symbol."

Kael nodded.

"Our elders called it the Covenant Mark."

Aren’s eyes narrowed.

"What covenant?"

Kael looked at him with sadness.

"The covenant between the Blackfangs and the Silver Lynx."

Aren became completely still.

Ash felt his relic grow warm again.

Kael noticed.

He immediately stopped speaking.

Ash asked, "Why does my relic react whenever you mention it?"

Kael didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward Aren.

"Did you show him the pendant?"

Aren touched the broken pendant around his neck.

"Yes."

Kael closed his eyes.

"Then the old protections are already failing."

Ash frowned.

"What protections?"

Kael opened his eyes.

"Your ancestors didn’t simply live beside the Guardian."

He paused.

"They made an agreement with it."

The words hung heavily in the shelter.

Aren looked confused.

"What kind of agreement?"

Kael looked toward the northern mountains.

"The kind that should never have been broken."

Ash remembered the ancient carving.

The wolf.

The Silver Lynx.

The Ice Bear.

The Great Eagle.

All standing beneath the celestial tree.

All facing something enormous.

He had assumed it represented an ancient battle.

Perhaps it represented something else.

An alliance.

A pact.

A promise.

Ash looked at Kael.

"Why did the Silver Lynx know about the Blackfang heir?"

Kael remained silent.

Ash waited.

Eventually the old lynx said, "Because the first Blackfang Alpha wasn’t chosen by the pack."

Aren’s ears lifted.

"He was chosen by the mountain."

Ash’s heart began beating faster.

Kael continued.

"According to our oldest records, the first Alpha entered the sacred territory alone. He returned three days later with a mark on his chest and a piece of black stone in his possession."

Ash instinctively touched his relic.

Kael’s gaze followed the movement.

"The elders believed that stone carried a fragment of the Guardian’s power."

Ash asked, "Then what am I carrying?"

Kael’s expression hardened.

"I don’t know."

Ash frowned.

"You know something."

"I know enough to understand why I don’t want to tell you."

The answer frustrated Ash, but something in Kael’s expression made him stop.

This wasn’t manipulation.

The old Silver Lynx genuinely feared the truth.

Aren looked at Kael.

"Why did the tribe leave?"

Kael took a slow breath.

"Because the Dreadborn returned."

Silence filled the shelter.

Ash immediately became alert.

Kael continued.

"They didn’t come like hunters. They came like soldiers."

"They knew the old symbols. They knew the ancient paths. They knew exactly where our elders had hidden the records."

Aren’s claws dug into the ground.

"What did they want?"

Kael looked at him.

"The same thing they want now."

His gaze shifted toward Ash.

"The heir."

Ash felt the black relic pulse once.

Kael noticed it.

His expression changed.

"They’ve already found you."

Ash remembered the Dreadborn commander.

It had deliberately spared him.

It had said they wanted to know whether the blood survived.

And then it had told its soldiers to wait.

Ash finally understood something that had bothered him ever since.

The Dreadborn weren’t trying to kill him.

They were studying him.

Kael looked at Aren.

"When the Dreadborn attacked, the elders divided the tribe. Some were sent south. Others went deeper into the mountains. A few remained behind to protect the old chamber."

"What happened to them?" Aren asked.

Kael’s voice became quieter.

"I don’t know."

Aren looked down.

Kael continued.

"I was ordered to escape."

"Why?"

"Because someone had to remember."

Aren looked up.

Kael’s damaged eye seemed to carry years of regret.

"I was supposed to return for them."

He swallowed.

"I never did."

Aren’s expression softened.

"You survived."

Kael gave a faint, painful smile.

"Sometimes survival feels less like a gift and more like a punishment."

Aren moved closer.

This time Kael didn’t stop him.

The old Silver Lynx placed his forehead gently against Aren’s.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Ash looked away, giving them privacy.

He understood what this moment meant.

Aren had spent years believing that every member of his tribe was gone.

Now, standing before him, was someone who remembered his childhood.

Someone who knew his family.

Someone who had shared the same home.

For the first time since Ash had met Aren, the young lynx didn’t look completely alone.

But the moment didn’t last.

A faint sound came from outside.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Even.

Precise.

Everyone froze.

Ash’s ears lifted.

Aren’s body immediately became tense.

Kael’s face turned pale.

The sound came again.

Three knocks against the stone outside the valley.

Ash whispered, "That’s the same rhythm."

Kael stared at him.

"You heard it before?"

"Under Moonveil."

Kael slowly stood.

Aren looked toward the entrance.

"Is it the Dreadborn?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

The answer came almost immediately.

His voice was barely audible.

"Something older."

The fire suddenly flickered.

Ash’s relic began glowing faintly.

Blue light spread across its surface.

Aren’s pendant responded.

The broken stone around his neck began emitting the same blue glow.

Kael stepped backward.

"No."

Ash looked at him.

"What is happening?"

Kael stared at the two relics.

"The Covenant Mark."

A deep vibration passed beneath the valley.

Snow fell from the cliffs.

Aren looked toward the ground.

Another vibration followed.

This time, something beneath their feet moved.

Ash felt the ancient energy rising through the stone.

Then the ground beneath the shelter cracked.

A thin blue light appeared through the fracture.

Kael whispered, "The chamber."

Ash looked at him.

"What chamber?"

"The one my tribe was protecting."

The crack widened.

A faint mechanical sound echoed from beneath them.

Something ancient was waking.

Kael turned toward Ash.

"You need to leave."

Ash shook his head.

"No."

"Ash."

"I’ve already been running from things I don’t understand."

Ash looked toward the glowing floor.

"If my ancestors made this pact, then I need to know why it was broken."

Kael stared at him.

For several seconds, the old Silver Lynx said nothing.

Then he slowly nodded.

"Then you are more like the first Alpha than you realize."

The ground shook again.

A circular pattern appeared beneath the snow.

Ancient symbols illuminated one after another.

The same celestial tree appeared at the center.

Around it were four figures.

A Blackfang wolf.

A Silver Lynx.

An Ice Bear.

A Great Eagle.

But above them was another symbol.

Something Ash had never seen before.

His relic suddenly pulsed.

The symbol flashed.

And the system appeared.

[Ancient Pact Detected.]

[Blackfang–Silver Lynx Covenant: Confirmed.]

[Guardian Connection: 12% Restored.]

Ash stared at the message.

Then another line appeared.

[Historical Record partially restored.]

[The First Covenant was established before the First Awakening.]

Ash’s heart tightened.

Before the First Awakening.

That meant the ancient alliance existed before the Guardian awakened.

Before the war.

Before the stories everyone remembered.

Before the Blackfang Alpha became the legend their pack still spoke about.

Ash looked at Kael.

"What was the Guardian protecting?"

Kael didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the entrance.

His ears were pointed toward the mountains.

Ash followed his gaze.

At first, there was nothing.

Then the snow on the northern slope began moving.

Not falling.

Moving.

Something enormous was beneath it.

A slow ridge traveled across the mountain.

It disappeared behind a cliff.

Then another section of snow shifted farther away.

Whatever was moving beneath the mountain was massive.

Aren stepped beside Ash.

Kael whispered, "It has awakened."

Ash stared at the northern mountains.

"What is it?"

Kael looked at him.

"I don’t know."

The old Silver Lynx hesitated.

"But my ancestors left one warning."

"What warning?"

Kael’s voice became almost a whisper.

"Never stand between the Guardian and what it protects."

The mountain trembled again.

The blue light beneath the valley suddenly became brighter.

Ash’s relic responded.

Aren’s pendant responded.

Then the entire valley filled with a deep, resonating sound.

It wasn’t a roar.

It wasn’t a growl.

It sounded like something ancient breathing after centuries of silence.

Ash felt the sound inside his bones.

The system appeared once more.

[Ancient Guardian Activity Detected.]

[Connection Stabilizing.]

[Current Guardian Connection: 12%.]

[Warning: Ancient Pact Integrity — Compromised.]

Ash stared at the final line.

"Compromised?"

Kael’s expression darkened.

"The pact was broken."

Aren looked toward him.

"Who broke it?"

Kael didn’t answer.

Ash looked toward the northern mountain.

The answer suddenly felt far more frightening than any Dreadborn attack.

Maybe the Dreadborn hadn’t broken the pact.

Maybe the Blackfangs hadn’t.

Maybe the Silver Lynx hadn’t.

Perhaps something else had done it.

Something that existed before all of them.

Something that had been waiting beneath the mountains.

The three knocks came again.

This time, they didn’t come from outside.

They came from beneath the valley.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Aren stepped backward.

Kael closed his eyes.

Ash’s relic burned with blue light.

Then, deep beneath the northern mountains, something opened its eyes.

Ash couldn’t see it.

He couldn’t even understand what it was.

But for one brief moment, he felt its presence.

Ancient.

Enormous.

And aware.

The system flickered.

[Warning: Sacred Territory Has Been Breached.]

[Unknown Entity Detected.]

[Guardian Response: Active.]

Ash looked at Aren.

Aren was staring toward the mountain.

For the first time since Ash had known him, the young Silver Lynx looked genuinely terrified.

Not because he had seen a monster.

Because he remembered something.

Something his tribe had known.

Something the elders had feared.

Aren slowly whispered, "Ash..."

Ash looked at him.

Aren’s eyes remained fixed on the northern darkness.

"It knows we’re here."

The blue light beneath the valley suddenly disappeared.

The fire went out.

And somewhere beneath the mountains, something began to move.
