Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 49: The One Who Broke It
Chapter 49: Chapter 49: The One Who Broke It
The first impact came from the entrance.
Stone cracked.
Aren immediately moved toward Ash.
Kael extinguished the small lantern they had brought with them, plunging the chamber into darkness.
Ash could hear movement beyond the sealed passage.
Several footsteps.
Heavy.
Controlled.
Not the movements of wild animals.
Soldiers.
The Dreadborn had found them.
Kael whispered, "They aren’t here for us."
Ash looked at him.
"Then what are they here for?"
"The chamber."
A second impact shook the passage.
A portion of the stone wall collapsed.
Dark figures appeared through the dust.
Their bodies were covered in dark fur and worn armor made from bone and hardened hide. Crimson eyes glowed through the darkness.
There were five of them.
Ash recognized the fighting style immediately.
They weren’t rushing.
They were examining the room.
Searching.
Looking for something.
One Dreadborn stepped forward.
Its gaze moved across the ancient paintings.
Then it stopped.
It looked directly at Kael.
"The last keeper."
Kael’s body stiffened.
Aren stepped forward.
"You know him?"
The Dreadborn smiled.
"We know all the keepers."
Kael’s claws extended.
"You shouldn’t have come here."
The creature tilted its head.
"You still remember what your elders did."
Kael’s expression became cold.
"You know nothing about them."
The Dreadborn gave a low laugh.
"We know more than your surviving elders ever did."
Ash felt anger rising inside him.
"What are you looking for?"
The creature looked at him.
Its eyes immediately moved toward the black relic.
For the first time, its expression changed.
Recognition.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"The heir."
Ash’s claws tightened.
"You already know about me."
"We have known about your bloodline for a very long time."
The Dreadborn moved forward.
Aren immediately attacked.
His body shot across the chamber with incredible speed, claws aimed directly at the creature’s throat.
The Dreadborn blocked the strike.
The impact echoed through the chamber.
Ash joined the fight.
The chamber erupted into chaos.
Dreadborn warriors moved between the ancient pillars with frightening coordination. They didn’t attack randomly. One distracted Aren while another attempted to reach the far side of the chamber.
Kael fought beside them despite his age.
His movements were slower than Aren’s, but his experience was obvious.
He knew exactly where to strike.
One Dreadborn lunged toward Ash.
Ash twisted aside and slammed his shoulder into the creature.
The Dreadborn staggered.
Ash followed with a claw strike across its armor.
The armor cracked.
The creature looked down.
Then it smiled.
"You have grown."
Ash froze for half a second.
The Dreadborn attacked.
Ash barely dodged.
Aren intercepted the creature before it could strike again.
The two exchanged blows.
Ash moved toward the central seal.
Something was wrong.
The ancient paintings were reacting to the battle.
Blue light had begun appearing between the cracks in the floor.
The circular seal beneath the painting was glowing.
Ash approached it.
His relic became hotter.
The system appeared.
[Ancient Relic Resonance Detected.]
[Guardian Connection Increasing.]
[Current Connection: 12%.]
Ash stared at the message.
"Why now?"
Kael shouted from behind him.
"Ash, get away from the seal!"
Ash turned.
Kael was fighting two Dreadborn at once.
"Why?"
"Because it recognizes you!"
The Dreadborn commander suddenly appeared behind Ash.
Ash turned too late.
A massive claw struck him across the side.
He was thrown against the stone wall.
Pain exploded through his body.
Aren shouted his name.
The commander walked toward Ash.
It raised one claw.
Then stopped.
Its expression changed.
The black relic had begun glowing.
Blue light spread across Ash’s chest.
The Dreadborn stepped backward.
"No."
Ash struggled to stand.
The relic pulsed again.
This time, silver light appeared alongside the blue.
The ancient paintings illuminated.
Every symbol in the chamber began glowing.
Aren’s pendant responded immediately.
Silver light surrounded him.
Kael stared in disbelief.
"The covenant..."
The Dreadborn commander looked toward the seal.
"You shouldn’t be able to activate it."
Ash heard the words, but before he could respond, the entire chamber disappeared.
He was standing beneath a vast celestial tree.
Snow covered the ground.
The sky above him was filled with unfamiliar stars.
Four figures stood before him.
The first Blackfang Alpha.
The first Silver Lynx leader.
The ancient Ice Bear Chieftain.
The Great Eagle Elder.
And in front of them stood the Guardian.
Ash expected violence.
Instead, there was silence.
The first Blackfang Alpha stepped forward.
He carried a black stone in his chest.
The same shape as Ash’s relic.
But he wasn’t holding it.
It was embedded within him.
Ash stared.
The Alpha lowered his head.
The Silver Lynx leader did the same.
The Guardian turned away from them.
Ash followed its gaze.
His heart stopped.
The Guardian wasn’t watching the four leaders.
It was watching the ground.
Beneath the celestial tree was an enormous circular seal.
And beneath that seal...
something was moving.
The ground slowly cracked.
A dark shape pressed against the barrier from underneath.
Ash couldn’t see its full form.
It was too large.
Far too large.
The four ancient leaders stood together.
The Guardian remained between them and the seal.
Then the Blackfang Alpha spoke.
"If the seal fails, the Dreadborn will not be the ones who awaken."
Ash’s breath caught.
The vision shifted.
The four leaders were now standing around the seal.
Their blood was being offered to the ancient stone.
Not as a sacrifice.
As a bond.
A covenant.
A promise.
The Blackfang.
The Silver Lynx.
The Ice Bear.
The Great Eagle.
Four bloodlines.
Four anchors.
One seal.
Then the vision changed again.
The Silver Lynx elder who had broken the covenant entered the sacred territory.
He stood before the seal.
He reached toward it.
And something beneath the mountain whispered to him.
Ash couldn’t understand the words.
But the elder smiled.
Then everything went dark.
Ash suddenly heard a voice.
Not the system.
Not the Guardian.
Something else.
Something beneath the seal.
"Come closer."
Ash immediately pulled away.
The vision shattered.
He returned to the chamber.
His body hit the stone floor.
Aren rushed toward him.
"Ash!"
Ash opened his eyes.
The chamber was still glowing.
The Dreadborn had stopped fighting.
Every creature inside the chamber was staring at the ancient seal.
The commander slowly stepped backward.
Ash struggled to breathe.
"What did you see?"
The commander stared at him.
For the first time since Ash had encountered the Dreadborn, the creature looked afraid.
Not of Ash.
Of what Ash had seen.
Kael looked toward the northern mountain.
A deep rumble echoed through the valley.
Then another.
The commander turned toward his soldiers.
"Leave."
One of them hesitated.
"But the relic—"
"Leave."
The Dreadborn began retreating.
Ash pushed himself upright.
"Why are you running?"
The commander stopped at the entrance.
It looked back.
"Because we came to retrieve what your ancestors hid."
Ash narrowed his eyes.
"What did they hide?"
The creature’s crimson eyes remained fixed on him.
"We don’t know."
Ash was stunned.
The Dreadborn continued.
"But now we know why the Guardian fears you."
The commander disappeared into the darkness.
Ash looked toward Kael.
"What does that mean?"
Kael didn’t answer.
The old Silver Lynx was staring at the northern mountains.
A blue light had appeared between the peaks.
It was brighter than anything Ash had ever seen.
The system appeared.
[Ancient Seal Integrity: 64%.]
Ash stared at the number.
It had fallen.
The previous reading had been seventy-one percent.
"What happened?"
Kael looked at the ground.
"The seal is weakening."
The system continued.
[Guardian Activity: Increasing.]
[Guardian Connection: 12%.]
[External Entity Activity: Increasing.]
Ash’s ears lifted.
"External entity?"
The system flickered.
[Unknown Entity: Awakening.]
The chamber trembled violently.
Aren moved beside Ash.
Kael looked at both of them.
His expression was no longer simply fearful.
It was the expression of someone who had finally realized that an old nightmare was returning.
Another tremor struck.
The mountain groaned.
Far above them, enormousquantities of snow began sliding down the northern slopes.
Ash looked toward the mountain.
At first, he saw nothing.
Then the snow moved.
Something beneath it shifted.
The movement was enormous.
A ridge of snow several hundred meters wide rose slowly before collapsing.
Then the mountain went still.
Ash held his breath.
Two enormous eyes appeared beneath the snow.
They were not the eyes of an Ice Bear.
They were not the eyes of a Silver Lynx.
They were not the eyes of any creature Ash had ever seen.
They were ancient.
Massive.
And impossibly deep.
Kael whispered, "The Guardian isn’t waking up."
Aren turned toward him.
"What?"
Kael stared at the northern mountain.
His voice trembled.
"The Guardian is trying to stop something else from waking up."
Ash looked at the glowing relic against his chest.
For the first time, he understood that the ancient war might have been nothing more than one Chapter in a much older story.
The Dreadborn were searching for something.
The Guardian was protecting something.
The four ancient bloodlines had once joined together to seal something beneath the mountain.
And now that seal was breaking.
The enormous eyes beneath the snow slowly disappeared.
But the feeling of being watched remained.
Ash looked toward Aren.
Aren was holding his pendant tightly.
Kael stood between them and the mountain.
None of them spoke.
There was nothing left to say.
The old stories had been wrong.
The Guardian was not the greatest threat sleeping beneath the Frostfang Mountains.
It was the last thing standing between the world above...
and whatever waited below.
The system appeared one final time.
[Ancient Covenant Status: Broken.]
[Four Bloodlines: Separated.]
[Ancient Seal: Failing.]
[Unknown Entity: Awakening.]
Ash stared at the final message as the northern mountain trembled once more.
Somewhere beneath the darkness, something ancient had begun to remember.
And this time, the mountains were not going to remain silent.
