Chapter 1552: Chapter 1552: Courtyard Life (4)
"Thank you, Auntie!" The little girl whispered her thanks, then finally started eating. Watching this, Sister-in-law Wang said to Jiang Xue, "Jiang Xue, look at you, you just brought so many things to my place, and now you’re giving her food again. I haven’t given your child anything."
"Sister-in-law, you’re taking it too seriously. It’s just a bit of food, it’s not anything valuable. Besides, I like children. What’s wrong with giving a child something to eat?"
"Alright, alright, I can’t argue with you. Come on, I’ll take you around for a look." Sister-in-law Wang could tell that Jiang Xue wasn’t the calculating type, and only then did she feel relieved. To be honest, her family’s situation wasn’t very good; half of her husband’s salary was sent back home.
There wasn’t much money left at home, life was a bit tight, so they rarely bought snacks or anything for the child. Today, Jiang Xue kept bringing things over and giving them to her, and she was worried she had nothing to give back.
Sister-in-law Wang took Jiang Xue out of the work unit compound, then wandered around the nearby village with her. She told Jiang Xue where she could buy vegetables, where she could buy rice, flour, and meat.
But because it was the afternoon, they couldn’t buy any leafy greens. Thinking about not having any greens for dinner again, Jiang Xue was a bit worried and asked Sister-in-law Wang, "Sister-in-law Wang, there’s no one selling vegetables at the market now. Do you know whose family in the village grows more vegetables and would be willing to sell some?"
"You want to buy vegetables?" Sister-in-law Wang froze for a moment and asked. They usually bought vegetables in the morning, so they could always get fresh produce.
Now it was afternoon, and the vegetable sellers had long since gone home.
"Yeah, when I came today, I only brought some rice, flour, and meat, no greens. I thought I could buy some here. Speaking of which, I still need to thank you for lunch. If it weren’t for that bunch of greens you sent over, we would’ve had only two meat dishes at noon."
When Little Wang Ke heard Jiang Xue mention eating meat, her mouth twitched a bit, as if she were about to drool. It had already been a long time since her family had eaten meat, though sometimes her dad would bring food back from the canteen and there would be a bit of meat in it. But it was always fatty, which she didn’t really like.
Jiang Xue saw this and understood a little in her heart. As for Sister-in-law Wang, she felt a bit embarrassed. But she had never gone out to buy vegetables in the afternoon, so she really didn’t know whose house might have some to sell. She herself had planted some greens, and they were usually enough for her family.
So, she said to Jiang Xue, "Jiang Xue, if you don’t have any greens for dinner, just go pick some from my plot. I planted some, enough for us to eat."
"Really? That’s great, I’ll go pick a bit later." Jiang Xue said with a smile. She already had an idea in mind: after she picked some of Sister-in-law Wang’s greens, she would bring a bit of meat over to her place.
Judging by her child, they probably hadn’t had meat for quite a long time.
After walking around for a while, the two of them took the children back to the work unit compound. There was a vegetable plot in the compound, divided up among the families. Because Mu Qiancheng had arrived late, he hadn’t been assigned a plot.
But even if they had been given a plot, Jiang Xue wouldn’t know how to plant anything, so it would be wasted. Besides, she couldn’t possibly stay in this compound for a long time. She still had lots of things to take care of, unlike the other sisters-in-law in the compound who, apart from looking after the children, had nothing else to do.
Of course, there were also some who had jobs, like teaching in the nearby village and such.
Sister-in-law Wang’s vegetable plot was in the middle, and the vegetables growing in it were thriving; you could tell at a glance that she was very good at growing vegetables.
Jiang Xue picked a handful of greens and a few cucumbers from Sister-in-law Wang’s plot before heading back. The first thing she did when she got home was to cut off a portion of the meat she’d brought, and then she took it next door.
