Chapter 87: Chapter 87| Nobody Was Entirely Ready for It to Be the Plan

Sable followed his glance. Then looked back at him with the expression of someone who had processed the concern and reached a conclusion about it faster than he had.

"What’s wrong with her," she said. "She’s been living in the same space as us for days." She held his gaze. "And you’re at the point of fainting forty five minutes before we need to start planning a facility operation."

He looked at the kitchen doorway.

Elena appeared in it with two plates of food and looked at the configuration at the table. Sable’s chair moved, Sable’s hand at the hem of her top, Damian’s specific expression. She set the plates on the far end of the table and went back to the kitchen with the matter-of-fact ease of someone who had decided this was information she was going to process later and function was the priority right now.

Kira looked at the operational file and did not look at the table.

Sable pulled her top over her head in a single motion and set it on the chair beside her. Her bra followed clasp free, pulled away, set aside with the quiet efficiency of routine. She turned toward him in the chair and her right hand came up and cupped her left breast toward him and her eyes found his with the specific directness that had replaced the clinical distance so long ago he couldn’t remember what the clinical distance had actually looked like.

He leaned forward.

His mouth found her right nipple first. The variation they’d established, the approach rotating so the cycle never calcified into a single pattern. He drew. The milk came immediately. Rich. Full. The ×2.0 ceiling present in the quality of the first draw the way it was always present — the accumulated depth of weeks of consistent cycle making itself known before the Flux reading had even begun to climb.

Above him her breath left her in the slow sound it always left her in. Her hand found the back of his head. Her fingers settled into his hair with the weight that had stopped being incidental a long time ago.

He drew again. Slower.

"Damian.." His name in her voice with everything in it.

He moved to the left boob. Drew there with the same unhurried intent and felt her grip tighten and heard the sound she made that was genuine and unmanaged and completely hers.

He stayed until the system confirmed.

He sat back. Drew his mouth from her. Her nipples flushed and erect, milk remnants at the corner of his lips. He ran his thumb across them without thinking about it.

She looked at him with the flush that appeared when precision abandoned its post entirely. Reached for her top. Pulled it back on with the quiet efficiency of routine and the specific expression of someone who had stopped finding anything about this moment anything other than what it was.

Ding!

[Bonus compounding: ×2.0 — ceiling maintained.]

"74%," he said.

She nodded. Made a note. Picked up her tablet.

Kira was still looking at the operational file. The expression on her face was the one she wore when she was focused on something and had decided that focus was the correct response to the current situation.

Elena came back from the kitchen with her own plate and sat at the table and looked at the food in front of her and then at Damian and then at her food.

"Feeling better?" she asked.

"Considerably," he replied.

She nodded like that was the answer she’d expected. "Good. Eat something. We have..." she looked at the time. "Eighty minutes before we need to leave."

He looked at the plate she’d set in front of him. At the operational file open on the table. At the four people assembled in a backup location at 3:45 AM with eighty minutes before a six hour drive toward a facility that held a sibling he’d never met and a seal that was sitting at 21.3% and accelerating.

He ate.

Kira walked them through the updated Facility Nine approach while they ate. The atmospheric sensor array, the adapted plan, the specific gaps that the adaptation had produced and the question that the gap raised and that nobody had said out loud yet because saying it out loud made it the plan and nobody was entirely ready for it to be the plan yet.

She put it on the table at 4:00 AM.

"The sensor array has one solution," she said. She looked at Elena. "Someone who registers at civilian baseline goes through the eastern corridor and disables the relay from inside."

Elena looked at her plate.

Then at Kira.

Then at the table with the expression of someone who had known this was coming since the moment Kira described the sensor array and had been deciding how to feel about it for the past fifteen minutes.

"That’s me," she said.

"Yes," Kira said.

The table was quiet for a moment.

Sable was already building the branch in the decision tree on her tablet. Not because the decision had been made. Because when it was made the branch needed to be ready.

Elena looked at Damian.

He looked back at her with the expression he used when he was giving someone the space to make a decision rather than making it for them. She’d walked out of an archive room with them at a run. She’d disabled a sensor relay in a facility that was already responding to their presence. She’d run two hundred meters of open ground alongside people who actually knew what they were doing.

She knew what she was capable of.

She just needed a moment to confirm it.

"Alright," she said. "Walk me through what I need to do."

Sable turned the tablet toward her.

The backup location held its quiet around them and outside the city was beginning its pre-dawn transition and in seventy five minutes they were going to be on a northern highway heading toward a facility that had been holding something for twenty two years that belonged somewhere else.

[Flux: 69%]

Passive dissipation running. He noted the number. Noted the Facility Nine plan taking its final shape around the table. Noted Kira’s left arm and the way she was holding it and the fact that she hadn’t mentioned it once since the service corridor.

He noted all of it and said nothing and ate his food and let the morning continue building toward whatever it was going to be.
