Project Zero: Milking Women Refuels Me.
Chapter 86| Second Location
Chapter 86: Chapter 86| Second Location
Kira looked at the Subject on the floor. At Damian. At the jacket she’d zipped to the collar with nothing under it. She looked at the wall for a moment with the specific expression of someone taking a brief personal inventory and concluding that inventory could wait.
"That worked," she said.
"Yes," he replied."and thanks".
"Don’t mention it," she said as red patches began appearing on her cheeks.
"I wasn’t going to," he said.
She picked up her operational bag from where she’d dropped it. He picked up his. They moved back through the safe house. Past the displaced furniture, past the two doors off their frames, past the scorched air and the cracked kitchen counter and out the front into the 3:17 AM city.
The street was quiet. The kind of quiet that 3:17 AM produced in a residential area when nothing had been loud enough to bring anyone to a window.
He looked at his hands.
The Pyros flame wasn’t there. He had nothing left to produce it. But at the edges of where the flame would have been, in the specific absence of it, there was something. A quality to the air around his hands that wasn’t heat. Wasn’t fire.
Blue-white.
Not an arc. Not the bilateral event from the hallway. Just a presence. The Voltis pathway making itself known in the only way it currently could, through the gap the Pyros flame usually occupied, asserting itself in the specific way things asserted themselves when the thing suppressing them ran out of capacity to keep suppressing.
He looked at it for three seconds.
Then he looked at the street.
Kira was already moving. He moved with her.
Ding!
[Seal degradation progress: 16.8% → 21.3%]
Ding!
[Note: Combat stress event — significant Flux expenditure to critical. Seal response: accelerated.]
[Note: The pathway remembers every time you reach the edge. It is learning the shape of you.]
[Note: Be ready.]
He read it while he walked. Filed it.
21.3%.
A fifth of the way to the thing that was going to change everything.
Somewhere ahead Sable and Elena were at Kira’s second backup location. The termination authorization was active. The safe house was compromised. The sibling was in Facility Nine six hours away.
And the seal was at 21.3% and the blue-white quality around his hands hadn’t fully faded yet.
He kept walking.
Ding!
[Milk Memory — Kira Claire streak: Day 2. Compounding: ×1.1.]
[Note: Passive induction event logged. Natural production establishing. Estimated cycles to independent production: 2-3.]
He looked at the notification.
Looked at Kira walking beside him with her jacket zipped to the collar and her operational face fully restored and her left arm held with the careful economy that said the last four minutes hadn’t been kind to the dressing.
He said nothing.
She said nothing.
They walked.
_ _
The second backup location was twenty minutes on foot from the compromised safe house.
Kira knew the route without checking. Obviously she’d walked it multiple times during the eight months of preparation, timing it, noting the camera positions, identifying the sections of pavement that had the kind of foot traffic at 3:00 AM that made two people moving through it unremarkable. She’d planned for exactly this. The specific contingency of needing to leave the primary location at speed with nothing but what they were carrying.
Damian walked beside her and said nothing and let her lead.
[Flux: 9%]
The city at 3:30 AM had its own character. Quieter than midnight, busier than 4:00 AM, the specific hour that belonged to shift workers and insomniacs and people who had reasons to be moving through streets that had largely decided to stop. Nobody looked at them. Nobody had reason to. Two people walking with bags in a residential district at 3:30 AM was the kind of thing cities absorbed without registering.
His legs had stopped making formal objections approximately five minutes into the walk and had settled into a functional complaint instead. Present, manageable, the specific feedback of a body operating below its preferred parameters and making sure he knew about it without actually stopping him.
Kira’s left arm was against her side.
He noted it and said nothing.
She noted him noting it and said nothing.
They walked.
The second backup location was on the fourth floor of a building that looked like every other building on the block — residential, unremarkable, the kind of facade that had been chosen for exactly those qualities. Kira produced a key from her jacket pocket and they went up the stairs without using the lift and the fourth floor corridor received them in its specific late-night quiet.
The door to the unit was already unlocked.
He went in first. Old habit.
Sable was at the table.
Of course she was.
She had her tablet open and three files running and a cup of coffee that was still producing steam which meant she’d made it recently which meant she’d been here long enough to have settled in and assessed the space and found the kitchen and decided that the situation called for coffee, which it did. She looked up when he came through the door and the look she gave him was the one she’d been giving him since the loading bay. Direct, reading, already three steps ahead of whatever he was about to say.
She stood up.
"Sit down," she said.
He sat down.
Elena appeared from the kitchen doorway with the specific expression of someone who had been waiting for them and was relieved they’d arrived and was processing that relief through the practical action of producing food from whatever the backup location’s supplies contained. She looked at Damian. At his face. At whatever the nine percent looked like from the outside.
She went back to the kitchen without saying anything and the sound of something being prepared followed her.
Kira came through the door behind him and locked it and did a visual sweep of the unit with the automatic thoroughness of someone who did visual sweeps the way other people breathed. Continuously, without deciding to. She looked at the windows. The secondary exit. The sightlines from the main room to the corridor door.
"Clean," she said. To herself as much as anyone.
She sat down at the table and kept her jacket zipped. She’d deal with the clothing situation when there was a clothing situation to deal with. Right now there was an operational file on the table and seventy five minutes before departure and the jacket was staying where it was.
Sable glanced at the zipped jacket. At Kira’s face. Filed whatever conclusion she reached and looked back at her tablet without commenting on it.
Sable was still standing.
Still looking at Damian.
"How’s your reserve?" she said.
He looked at her. "I might faint any moment from now," he said.
She pulled her chair around the table to his side without ceremony. Reached for the hem of her top. He put his hand on her arm.
"Elena," he said quietly."She’s right there,"
