Chapter 88: Chapter 88| On The Road II

They were packed and ready at 3:58 AM.

Damian stood at the backup location window looking at the street below and ran the math he’d been running since the table. 74% going into a six hour drive with passive dissipation running continuously. By the time they reached Facility Nine’s outer radius he’d be sitting somewhere around 55% before the approach even started. Ember Shell activation would take 12% of that. The approach corridor would take more. Whatever happened inside would take the rest.

He’d gone into Facility Seven at 89%. He’d come out at 9%.

Facility Nine was supposed to be easier. Supposed to be.

He directed the thought inward.

’Can I refuel twice from the same source before departure?’ he thought. ’Double cycle to go in at full capacity.’

Ding!

[Query: Consecutive same-source refuel cycle.]

[Status: Not viable at current interval.]

[Note: Milk production requires nutrient replenishment between cycles. Minimum interval for viable secondary production from same source: 6-8 hours post primary cycle.]

[Note: Current interval since Sable Wren cycle: 47 minutes. Production insufficient for meaningful Flux restoration.]

[Note: Alternative source recommended if additional Flux required before departure.]

He read it twice.

Six to eight hours. Sable was out.

He looked at the room. At Elena in the kitchen doorway with her jacket on and her braid redone and the expression of someone who had been watching him stand at the window for the past three minutes and had drawn a conclusion from it.

Kira appeared from the corridor where she’d been doing a final perimeter check. She looked at him. At his face. At whatever the calculation looked like from the outside.

"Fill your reserve before we leave," she said. Not a suggestion. "I’m not watching you nearly collapse in a service corridor again because you went in low." She looked at Elena. Then back at him. "You have an alternative source. Use her."

Elena looked at him from the kitchen doorway.

"Come on, Damian," she said. The warm direct expression. No hesitation in it. "It’s my turn."

He looked at her.

She tilted her head slightly toward the bedroom.

"We have two minutes," she said. "Let’s not waste them."

The bedroom was small and functional — a bed, a window, the specific spareness of a space built for operational use. Elena sat on the edge of the bed and he pulled the chair from the corner and sat across from her and the room held its pre-dawn quiet around them.

She reached for her top without being asked.

This time she pulled it over her head cleanly. No zipper, no buttons, just the single motion of someone who had done this before and had stopped finding the moment anything other than what it was. The bra followed. She unclasped it from the back and let it fall and sat in front of him with the specific ease of someone whose clinical distance had been replaced by something warmer on the first cycle and hadn’t come back since. Her big boobs follow suit bouncing in rhythm from the expense of its shell just taken off.

He activated Lactation Induction.

[Flux: 64%]

Five percent gone. He felt it leave and felt the skill reach and watched Elena’s eyes widen slightly at the now-familiar sensation of her body beginning something it hadn’t started on its own.

"Still strange," she said quietly.

"It will fade, give it time," he replied.

She almost smiled.

He leaned forward. His hands found her waist. present, grounding. He took her left side first, his mouth closing around her nipple with the intent of someone working against a two minute window. The milk came slower than Sable’s. The Elena cycle still establishing its natural rhythm, the Lactation Induction doing the work that the bond hadn’t yet made automatic. But it came. Warm. Present.

Above him Elena’s spine straightened then released. The specific sequence of her body receiving something and deciding how to carry it. Her right hand found the fabric of his shirt at his shoulder and curled into it. Not directing. Just present in the way she was always present. Analytical first, then something warmer underneath the analysis.

He drew again.

Her grip on his shirt tightened. Her chin lifted slightly toward the ceiling. A moaning sound came out of her "fuckk..". It was small, controlled, the kind that arrived before the decision to manage it could catch up.

He moved to the right.

Her shoulders dropped as the tension left them. The specific release of someone who had stopped asking their body to perform composure and had let it respond honestly instead. Her free hand pressed flat against the bed beside her.

[Flux: 64% — Lactation Induction cost deducted.]

[Flux climbing: Elena Vasquez — Grade A. Restoration in progress.]

He drew until the system flagged completion.

[Flux: 64% + 60% = 100%]

He sat back. Drew his mouth from her. Her nipples flushed and erect. Milk remnants at the corner of his lips. He ran his thumb across them without thinking about it.

She looked at him with the expression that had nothing of the researcher left in it. The warm unguarded look that appeared when her body had stopped being precise about anything and was simply present in what it was.

"Finally full?." she asked.

Ding!

[Milk Memory: Elena Vasquez — Refreshed. Grade A bonus reapplied. Duration: 24 hours.]

[Bonus compounding: ×1.3 — streak day 3.]

[Lactation Induction: Cycle 3. Natural production establishing. Estimated cycles to independence: 1-2.]

"Yes," he confirmed.

She reached for her top. Pulled it back on with the deliberate ease she’d developed. New to the routine but no longer unfamiliar with it. She looked at him with the flush still present in her cheeks and the warm expression doing its best to reassemble the researcher around its edges.

"Good," she said. "Now let’s go get your sibling."

They left at 4:03 AM.

Three minutes behind schedule. Kira noted it without commenting on it. Sable was already in the back seat of the primary car with her tablet open before the engine started. Elena took the seat beside her. Kira drove. Damian rode passenger with 100% Flux and the specific quality of a body that had been given everything it needed and was ready to use it.

[Flux: 97%]

Passive dissipation had already started pulling from the ceiling. He noted it and noted that 97% going into a six hour drive was considerably better than the alternative and looked at the road ahead.

The city thinned around them as the highway opened up. Dawn was still an hour away — the sky doing its pre-dawn thing, the darkness at its thinnest quality, the specific grey that preceded color. Other vehicles on the highway but not many. The specific population of a road at 4:00 AM — long-haul drivers, night shift workers, people with reasons to be moving through hours that most people were still sleeping through.
